Hrm. We practically have a GWC version of Netflix here.
I have to echo the “Great thread” comments. I’m sure there are more than I can currently think of, but here are the shows/games I’ve seen/tried so far.
Dr Horrible
Warehouse 13 (I also would not have watched after the pilot)
Chuck
Animatrix, I had heard & heard & heard about this one, but never even thought to watch it. I’m glad I did.
Virtuality, I too would have never known about it if it wasn’t for this forum
X Men Movies, I’ve never been big on comic book movies, mainly because most of them are so BAD. These were a great surprise & a lot of fun.
Sarah Connor Chronicles, I just didn’t think this show had any chance in hell of being good. Boy was I wrong!
Dollhouse, I’m glad I went back & finished watching. I hope it continues it’s upward trend.
Eureka, how fun is this show?!
Eve, I still need to go back & give it a solid chance. But I never would have tried at all before.
Things I am meaning to watch/play:
Mass Effect, with as much as Chuck talks about this game I have to try it.
Buffy, I am always hesitant to start a story in the middle, but with so many people saying so many good things, I will have to do what Armando is planning, start with season 2.
Stargate SG1, I had seen shows periodically, especially when I was playing Everquest. A few of the guys I played with absolutely loved the show. I liked what I saw but was never “into” it. I am going to have to watch it for real now.
Thank you guys, I was desparing of ever seeing quality television except periodically. The things recommended here give me hope that Hollywood isn’t completely lost.
I’m sure a few virtual smacks are headed my way for these two but…
The Star Wars Universe
The Star Trek Universe
And
Eureka
Alien(s)(es)
Spaced
Shaun of the Dead
Hot Fuzz
When Harry Met Sally
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Supernatural
Buffy
Angel
Firefly
Do I need to keep going?
Thank you all for broadening my horizons. Like Topgun said, I’ve come to respect the opinions of this group so highly that any and all recommendations you make are immediately moved to the top of my list.
Not only did GWC turn me onto Chuck, but I have now turned several other people on to it.
Also, thread-bump for people who hadn’t seen Cosmos before.
So far:
Red Dwarf! - I gorram love this show. I had never even heard about it till GWC. Belated thanks!
The Guild - Despite playing WoW like an addict since release and listening to WoW podcasts mentioning it in every episode I never bothered to actually watch an episode till GWC. Reminds me I still need to watch the new season.
Spaced - Another fantastic show I had never even heard about. Ive now watched this show almost as many times as Ive seen Farscape.
Eureka - How I managed to avoid a show about a town full of genius scientists Ill never know. Glad Im onto it now thats for sure.
Mass Effect - A few years late to the party, but it hasnt stopped me from playing through at least once on every difficulty since I picked it up on GWC recommendation.
Coming Up:
Legend of Neil
Venture Bros
Eve
For me… It’s the GWC forums that brought me to most of the “new to me” stuff.
T.V.
Firefly
Virtuosity
defying Gravity
Movies
Serentity
Shaun of the Dead
Web stuff
the Guild
Dr. Horrible
legend of Niel
Books (really that one by itself as the book club got me to start reading again)
Foundation
World War Z
Since I am one of the shall we say experienced (ok old) watcher of science fiction I have seen most of the original TV shows including the original V.
Dr. Horrible
The Guild
Great idea for a thread and for me that would be:
[ul]
[li]Firefly + Serenity + Firefly Comics + Greg Edmondson’s score + River Tam Sessions + The Signal Podcast + THE BROWNCOATS COMMUNITY
[/li][li]The Guild
[/li][li]Legend of Neil
[/li][/ul]
There would be more on the list, but isn’t completely the GWC forums’s “fault” to get me interested.
Living abroad it takes up a lot of resources and time to delve into so many things discussed on these boards, but I’ll be forever thankful for you introducing me to the Whedonverse with Firefly. And who knows, always in motion is the future, so there will be plenty of stuff for me to delve into.
I’d heard about The Guild, but probably would not have caught it if not for the arc. For that, I’m eternally thankful.
I also would never have finished reading Dune if it hadn’t been the book club’s pilot selection a couple years back.
Aside from that, my perspective has mostly been one of excitement in finding other people who watched the same stuff I did. So what material did you all watch/play/read in solitude, wondering if anyone else shared your love, until you found GWC?
For me:
BSG - obviously
Red Dwarf
Firefly
Galaxy Quest
Star Trek novels
Settlers of Catan (not that you play that in solitude, but it is a small slice of the population that plays it)
Thread-bump since this is on topic for podcast #214.
I should ad Venture Bros. now. Totally didn’t get what the fuss was about, but I kept hearing good things about it here, so I bought Season 1.
The next week I bought Seasons 2 & 3.
i would never have given SGU a chance had it not been for GWC… but i am not getting back into it… i guess everytime i try Stargate i get archs that i really dislike…
i should totally go find the episodes of Stargate with firefly people in it though…
Firefly. I watched the first 5 minutes of it and turned it off when it came out. I found the podcast because of the Eve online episode, and kept listening. I finally gave Firefly another chance, and thanks:)
Also Mass Effect. I’m pretty invested in Eve, so trying out another game wasn’t a high priority. I did, and thanks again.
Always good to see another Firefly convert! Welcome to the forum Edoz!
There are so many.
Firefly is probably one of the first.
The Last Starfighter followed shortly after.
The Guild and Dr. Horrible I would never have found on my own.
Not being a big gamer I never would have tried Mass Effect (on my son’s system no less)
Lately when I watch something new I find my self wondering what Chuck, Audra and Sean would say about it.
The two best for me are Firefly and Guild.
The Guild, Dr. Horrible, Legend of Neil, and partly for Spartacus… my friend has been on my case for weeks… and Sean kept saying “watch Spartacus”… the combined force is too great to resist…
Ha. I just realized one that isn’t quite a straight-line, but there is a definite correlation.
GWC -> Twitter (yes, it was GWC that got me to take the plunge)
GWC -> Wil Wheaton (I was a hater. I am reformed)
Twitter -> Wil Wheaton (cause, duh)
Wil Wheaton -> Chris Hardwick, aka Nerdist. Wil shared a picture with himself the Nerdist and I thot, “Awesome handle” and started following him
Chris Harwick -> Web Soup. This is a geek paradise show. A geek hosting a show about viral and crazy internet videos? Game. Set. Match.
So, GWC got me to watch Web Soup. From a certain point of view.
I know it seems silly but we get more from you guys than you do from us.
Off the top of my head, for me it was:
Appleseed
Death Note
Twighlight Series (still can’t believe that)
Sarah Conner Chron.
Vexel
Top Gear - (I know not Scifi/Fantasy but still)
Great thread
Ice Road Truckers
Monday Night Football
American Idol
Project Runway
OK, not really. But you were wondering there for a minute, weren’t you?
