Skype meetup idea

I’m not sure if this would work, but I was wandering if anyone would be interested in a skype meet up on April 5th 11am-12 est. Is anyone interested?

The second thing would be if a handful wants to do it, we can do a conference or a skpecast. Skypecasts might be easier, since one does not need to be invited before coming

UPDATE: We will use skype confereence sicne everyone can use it. Please, send Emilyfromohio your username, or add me to your contacts at ugh…emilyfromohio

I haven’t looked into skype much, but I may have to. The thought of having Emilyfromohio taxing my poor old laptop just tickles me somehow.

Upon consideration of the proposal, I will indicate my willingness to participate in such.

(Sitting here word counting to make sure I hit ten…)

Pike, I’ve had this computer for a good six years. It has files older then you…and yet believe it or not, this thing just won’t die lol.

Sure your interested The Alpaca Herder, you told me what time, adn date to say lol

Shhh! Nobody is supposed to know that yet… :):)

I’ll be down for that. I’m a big fan of skype. The audio is th ebest I’ve used and the video chat is good too.

Why not start it during the show  we can give reactions during commercials and even mute it during showtime. Don’t know if the talk host as controls to run it in an organized way.

It will be like virtual audience/online frak party (since there seems to be none in Philly next friday :frowning: )

The only problem I have with that is timezones…plus we have the frak party

will be happy to join if its ok. Sounds like fun

I’m on Pacific time, but I could do 11am EST on the 5th. I’ve never heard of skype before. Is it idiot-friendly? You wouldn’t believe what it took for me to get an avatar! (A Mac Genius) It sounds so fun to do.

The Mac software is a free download at:
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/macosx/

The service itself is free for Skype-to-Skype calls. Skype-to-telephone costs a little bit but is great for international rates. In my case right now, I need good international rates for calls.

You need headphones and a microphone to do this well. While USB headsets exist they are not necessarily recommended. A headset with separate plugs for the microphone and headphone jacks on your Mac is appropriate.

I also have a small Skype starter kit that I can throw in the mail if you need it.

I’m in for the 5th. It may be easier though to set up a Skypecast so we can have almost an unlimited number of people.

Could we call it “The Pacific Post-Mortem”? When Emily and I discussed this in the past week during a Skypetastic recording session, we talked about doing Skypecasts. On a Skype conference call we can have up to nine people plus the call originator. On a Skypecast we could get more folks in. We could record the session from here as we are equipped for that.

I’d be interested, too.

I like Skype. I use my bluetooth headset and don’t have to be tied to my computer.

Hopefully, I’ll have seen the episode by then. I don’t have cable, so I have to depend on the kindness of others taping it for me…

I’ll open up a skypecas way way early hahaha. It’s good though, Alpaca, because you said we could do it before the show aired, but I said it would get in the way of the frak party. Then I said we could always do it after, but then changed my midn and decided on the morning. You gave me the time and made me post it yay Alpaca

So what is skype?

Skype is this awesome thing, that lets you connect with people over the internet. It is how many of your favorite podcasts, outside of gwc are recorded. YOu can talk to someone in England, and it’lls ound like thier int he same room. Just tgo to
www.skype.com

All you need is a microphone. I’m pretty sure most visits, and all macs (new enough) have inturnal mics). Now, most computers come with a cheap, handheld mic. Gamers will probably also find a mic in their boxes. It’s mostly a headset, and maybe not the best quality but it works. You can pick up some pretty cheap but good mics for 14 bucks at best buy. Headphones don’t hurt, but if you can’t use headphones, just keep the volume a little lower, and take your mic away from the speaker. Besides, I’m sure most peple can ahndle sound bleeding into the mi, just a little bit.

So, then you have the question of skypecasts. I think skypecasts require skype 3.0. If you sign on skype, you’ll see a “live” icon above your name. All skypecasts that are going on at the time will show up. I think I’ll also find some way to get a link up, if I can.

Actualy, in orderr to use skyepcast, you need skype 3.2 or later. It only took aobut three seconds for me to update at least

Sounds snazzy to me.

Sounds Awesome let’s do it!

I hate to sound dumb but there is no skypecast for the mac osx version, In fact there is not even a live tab for the mac osx version of skype. It is only found on the windows version. So I don’t know how that would work other than having to download and hook up a camera and a mike to my desktop that I rarely use. Just thought I would point that out! Let me know if I am wrong.

From what I can see on this end, it does not appear to be problematic to initiate such on MacOS X. The key thing that we need to settle is the time on Saturday morning. From there we can set up a private/hidden/whatever Skypecast for GWC folks to participate in.
