Settlers of Catan

I know it’s not a video game but I was just wondering if anyone else had ever played. I’m totally addicted.

Yup, I’ve played it many times. Love it. Don’t own it—my friend owns it, but when we get together to game it’s one of our favorites.

What other games to you like?

You know when I was little I loved board games but as I’ve gotten older I play them less and less. Settlers of Catan is the first board game I’ve really played in a long time.

My friend got it and made everyone play and now we get together and play like three times a week.

It’s a favorite around here – especially since Sean and I agreed to never play Star Wars Risk again. Great game, but it’s just not fit for jerks like us to play.

That said, I’m not sure Sean’d play Settlers with me, either. The last time he played a game with other friends over at my place, I wasn’t in the game. Instead I ended up causing him to lose by doing the only part I really enjoy anyway: messing with people and convincing them to change the outcome of the game.

Yeah, it’s petty and childish. I’m not proud.

Why do I imagine that you and Sean playing Star Wars Risk becomes a full contact sport?

I have a friend who bought Star Wars Trivia Pursuit for me for Christmas and wanted to play me just to beat me. I took his sorry arse down quickly and efficiently.

…he simply couldn’t believe I knew the number of the Stormtrooper in Star Wars who was not at his post. I mean, puhlease…can I be a geek and not know TK421? What a poser.

You know the friend that got me started on the game does that - if he gets mad at you for messing him up he’ll just play to make you lose regardless of if he wins or not.

Shadow of Camelot, Settlers of Cataan,…

We had a friend who finally relocated TALISMAN…

thats is pretty fun… like hours long but fun.

We so need to have a DFW meet-up game night.

There’s a pretty cool game called “Duel of Ages” that I’ve gotten into in recent years.
I’d bet that many GWCers would enjoy it: www.duelofages.com

Basically, let’s say four people are playing, you split into two teams and each team has two characters. And the two teams fight to kill the other teams characters (and do some labyrinth contests to gain new weapons, etc.).
Nice thing about the game is you play with a set time limit. You say “The game ends at 11 pm”, and whichever team is wining them wins.
Check out all the cool characters: www.duelofages.com/history

Man I cut school to play Catan all day senior year. Yeah. I am such a nerd

Don’t worry I could totally see doing that…I can’t get enough of it.

It is a great game that someday I hope to own. Only played it once and it took us forever because well, it was our first time. After I think about five hours or so I decided to throw the game so it would end. That and it was being sort of encouraged by one of the bystanders.

I’ve got wood for sheep.

A friend of mine has a “wood for sheep” shirt from somewhere.
And I vaguely remember a version of the game on x-box marketplace years ago, but I don’t know if it’s still available.

Yeah - we’ve taken to calling it lumber…

It is, I’ve got it. I’d be down for a game if you anyone decides to get it

Likewise.
We have the original Settlers, plus the expansion that lets you play with six players. Then I bought my roommate the Cities and Knights expansion, so we’re back down to four players until I can get the expansion to that expansion.

But C&K is cool because you get to fight a little and build metropolises (metropoli?).

Fighting is anti-Catan imo

Sounds like very Head Six behaviour to me, perhaps even more dysfunctional…

Very true, DP. But it’s pretty low-key in C&K. You have two or three knights that you can use to protect yourself from robbers and pirates, block other players’ expansion, and sometimes knock an opponent’s knight out of the way. You’re not laying siege or anything, so it could never turn into Risk.

He who controls the sheep, controls the universe!

On a side note, for the people who like to play Risk, try Risk 2210 I believe it’s called. It’s Risk but it has a dfinitive end point. There are only 5 rounds total, while this would be a shortened Risk, by no means think it’s short. It still averages my friends & I about 3 hours to do a full game of it.

Oh & Solai, I got Star Wars TP for christmas several years ago, none of my friends will play it with me. They are afraid I’ll kick their butts! :frowning: So every now & then I pull out my little R2 & just hit his head to randomly roll.

I love Catan! It’s one of my favorites, too. I think I played once with one of the expansion packs and liked it, though we only have the basic set. Has anyone seen the 3-D Settlers of Catan game? It resembles a chess board with wooden pieces, etc. Pretty cool stuff.

Another cool (and inexpensive) game some friends introduced us to is the Werewolves of Miller’s Crossing (we just call it Werewoof). It’s a card-based RPG that relies on everyone’s ability to bluff, lie, persuade, and strategize to figure out what’s going on. It’s a blast with a big group when you can start introducing more complex roles.
