Oh, I totally agree, MovieDude. I’m just saying that it diminished my person attraction to the character.
The movie industry can’t complain that film piracy is very popular, especially in Europe when it takes 5 MONTHS (06.01.2011) until this movie will be released here!!!
So I’m gonna find and watch it earlier, and in English what I prefer anyway.
Anybody saw the box office on Pilgrim?
As good as it is it’s already called an epic box office failure.
Made like only 10mil during 1st week end. That does not take away any awesomeness from the movie but it’s not going to help the future non-superhero comics movies.

I have no doubt that as it will be considered a box-office failure in the mainstream, it will breathe new life on DVD and Blu-Ray and find a smaller yet more adamant fanbase, making it a cult classic. Remember that The Big Lebowski and Office Space did HORRIBLY at the box office.
It made 10 mil again this week.
That doesn’t really happen often, there was virtually no drop off.
IDK that could be a good sign?
It’s a sign that word of mouth is building, but it’s low enough that it’s a toss-up as to whether that would be enough to extend the run. Ironically, the movie business went into “Blockbuster or Bust” mode after Star Wars, which had a similar slow growth.
I still rather would have seen a big box office, but you’re absolutely right… I could easily see this movie living on as a geek classic.
Unfortunately, good word of mouth could be undone by stupid movie theatres that cut back from 4 shows per day to 2 shows, as mine did this past weekend.
My theory on why the movie didn’t take the number one spot last weekend: The target audience was at home playing video games.
I think the word of mouth explanation is a big part of it. The other thing is that it’s really only appealing to a small subset of humans in the U.S. and Canada (where it’s available now): those born in the 1980s and geeks who love and appreciate the geek culture of the last 25 years.
Also, I wonder how many screens it was playing on… That can dampen the box office numbers. It’s actually reminding me of Juno in that it was not a successful movie at first, but that word of mouth had great potential to increase its success. Being featured at Comic Con might actually have been a bad thing for Scott Pilgrim because it increased the pressure for it to make it big at the box office right away.
I just looked up last year’s Comic Con darling for comparison. District 9 opened on about 200 screens more than SP, it came in FIRST at the box office on its opening weekend with $37 million, and it continued to build for several additional weeks. So perhaps SP really did not do well in comparison. But I think the stars will align to make SP a cult hit.
There are a lot of factors that lead to the box office decline (I personally think Universal couldn’t find the right way to advertise something so different), but the bottom line is that audiences weren’t interested at this moment. They appeared to be interested in The Expendables which had a much more clearly defined advertising strategy along with an appealing premise. Since the average weekend had at least three new releases a weekend, I seriously doubt that there will be a remergence.
But why worry about it? What matters is that we love it and that we can scream it’s praises. There are others like us who are just as adamant about this film and the more noise we all make will make others notice. I intend to hold a Scott Pilgrim party on the weekend of it’s Blu-Ray release and allow others a chance to enjoy this wildly quirky comedy. It’s in the sharing that makes any expirience satisfying.
That’s amazingly well done!!
I’m just back from seeing it. I loved it. Great movie. Watching this and Kick-Ass would be a great night in. The cinema was quite empty though, probably a good thing. Quite a few people left half way through, WTF? I couldn’t believe it.
This is awesome!
I had this same experience with Speed Racer. I think your average muggle just isn’t equipped to make sense of these kinds of movies. Mark my words, they’ll be seen as seminal in ten years.
Enjoyed this movie so much, I just ordered the books from Amazon.
Goes and sits in front of the door
Okay i just saw this movie and am blown away.
Let me qualify this is not the movie for everyone; in fact its not even a movie for most people. but dammit if its not the movie for me.
See i spent those years of my life in Toronto, and in a really small way into the music scene. I recognized the places, there was a music cue where i gasped; i literally gasped cause my heart was broken to that same song in a similar moment.
it all just seems so personal; like a movie that was made for me. Its a reaction thats not gonna hit but one in thousands. I know the Game influences and super stylized fighting, brings the geek audience and it was cool, but its nothing to story around it.
I know there are more than a few people who may see glimpses of themselves as Scott, but i was not Scott; I’m knives.
in all honesty i haven’t had a reaction this strong to a movie in an age.
I just saw Scott Pilgrim and now I realize THIS IS THE AWESOME!
Ok, Bomi as Vegan Ex is sheet inspiration!
I saw the Blu-ray on sale on Boxing Day and didn’t even pause to think. Got a strange look from my wife, I think she may have said “really?”. Damn if I didn’t love that flick tho:)
