Sci-Fi Babes

Eversince the BOOB 'Cast I’ve been thinking about sci-fi babes. Okay maybe more than thinking but I won’t get into that. A-N-Y-W-H-O, the origins of the sci-fi babe goes back to the pulp mags of the 50s when the predominate readership were pubescent males. Throughout the decades the sci-fi babe has remained.

Is it sexist or not? IMO, no. (Besides, “what’s wrong with being sexy?”) The sci-fi babe is almost always intelligent and capable. She is not just eye candy. BSG is no exception, hence Six, Boomer, et al. Sci-fi babes are complex and diverse. “Enough of my yappin’. Let’s boogie!”

Here is a list of my favorites. Chime in.

From Film:
Linda Harrison - Nova - Planet of the Apes
Carrie Fisher - Slave Leia - Return of the Jedi
Mathilda May - Space Vampire - Lifeforce
Sigourney Weaver - Gwen DeMarco - Galaxy Quest (Oh yeah and that other film)
Carrie Anne Moss - Trinity - The Matrix
Scarlett Johansson - Jordan Two Delta - The Island
Megan Fox - Mikaela Banes - Transformers

From TV Series:
Barbara Luna - Marlena Moreau - ‘Mirror, Mirror’ Star Trek
Terry Farrell - Jadzia Dax - Deep Space Nine
Jeri Ryan - Seven of Nine - Voyager
Claudia Black - Aeryn Sun - Farscape

Then there are groups of babes, for example:
The X-Men babes: Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, and Rebecca Romijn
The Firefly babes: Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, and Summer Glau
The BSG babes: Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, Lucy Lawless, Katee Sackhoff, Kandyse McClure, Nicki Clyne, and Mary McDonnell

Finding Babes in TV and movies is easy. For some reason casting directors seem to go for that sort of thing…
If you want a tough problem, find a lead female character that is not “Hot” AND not evil.

Mira Furlan as Deleen in Babylon 5 never did anything for me.
Linda Hamilton in “T2”.
Gillian Anderson of X-Files

And let me say right now, I believe all women are beautiful. The qualifications here were not “Hot” and not evil. These women portrayed characters that were meant to arouse other areas. I can’t believe I just said that.

I would add the lady doctor from Outland.

Mila Jovovich: Fifth Element.
Linda Fiorentino: the morgue attendant in MIB
Sharon Stone: Total Recall

Any of the girls on the SHADO moonbase in the series UFO:
Purple Wigs! Miniskirts! Secret Moonbase!
Women wearing Purple Wigs and Miniskirts on a Secret Base on the moon!
What’s not to love about that???

Jessica Alba…in anything. Damn!

gaf

Alrighty. As much as this may be problematical I will offer two things up. First, Kaylee from Firefly was the most attractive female. As of this point in BSG my pick is Kendra Shaw.

A question perhaps is why. Kaylee has brains mixed with beauty and modesty. Shaw has the beauty with the long black hair mixed with sardonic wit.

Well, that surely made little sense…I think…

Darryl Hannah: Pris from Blade Runner. She was Six before Six was Six.

Personally I think that Hamilton in the cell in T2 doing chin-ups… wow… maybe it’s just the physique, but I think she’s hot in that scene. Not a sex kitten in the least… more like a sex jaguar…

And putting Scully on the “not-hot” list… I’m sure there are several thousand geeks who would disagree with you. I remember hearing an interview with her where she was told that in Britain she’s referred to as “the thinking man’s strumpet.”

For me… smart is sexy… so Dana Scully definitely belongs in the pantheon of Hot Sci-Fi Women.

There will always be one Sci-fi babe that I immediately think of:

Nicole deBoer, who played Ezri Dax on Deep Space Nine. Funny story goes along with this:

I am sitting at a bar in NYC in the late nineties with a friend of mine, Anne Auberjonois. You may recognize her last name as she is the sister of Rene Auberjonois who played Odo on Deep Space Nine. I mentioned to her that there was a new cast member on the show whom I had a huge crush on, Nicole deBoer. We laugh about it and start talking about something else.

Two weeks later I meet Anne for drinks again and she is just beaming with pride.

“What?” I ask.

“I told Rene about your crush.”

“You didn’t!”

“I did. He told Nicole about it. She was flattered and sends her regards.”

I was speechless. To think that this Hollywood star actually heard that I had a crush on her was just surreal and very cool.

Anywho, that is my Sci-fi babe story. Oh, and I met Morena Baccarin at a party two years ago…she is definitely a babe, even in real life.

Solai, I am so with you on this one. She is a cross between cute and attractive that really works.

Counter-examples, please:
(a) Cute and not attractive.
(b) Cute and attractive that doesn’t really work.

I was afraid of this. To say someone is not “Hot” hurts me on many levels. I shutter at our culture’s obsession with body image. As well, I have the daunting task of raising two girls in such an environment.

That being said, I start a thread about Scifi Babes. Go figure. Anywho, I did not create rankings for a reason. I don’t believe in 'em. Should ‘Blade Runner’ be ranked above or below ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’? It’s like when your child asks, “Do you love mommy more than me?” It’s not quantitive. You can’t rank your love or passion.

I was simply trying to begin a discussion on the phenomenon and the first response was a challenge:

And I tried to address it…poorly.

I put Deleen. To me not a babe but more of a mother/nuture character. Um excuse me Dr. Freud. Sarah Connor, psycho kick-ass chick with biceps bigger than mine. And finally, look at the big brain on Scully. The first reaction to this might be that I am a male chauvinist intimidated by the power of woman. That couldn’t be farthest from the truth and I hope I have made that abundantly clear.

Besides ATGreat there is also Captain Kathryn Janeway

Wow. I am not sure I could handle meeting a woman who is so glamorously attractive. She’s just unworldly beautiful. I am with Sean on Jewel (Kaylee), though. She’s just amazing.

(a) Hayden Panettiere (sp?) (Claire Bennett)
(b) Kristin Bell (Veronica Mars)

Blanking on A, and would defend B more vigorously if it didn’t t make me look like creepy old guy.

I think you are misunderstanding the descriptors.
Cute and attractive is like Sweet and Sour. You could have one of each or both.

Cute but not attractive - any baby that isn’t yours.

More attractive than cute - Tricia Helfer.

More cute than attractive - Nicki Clyne.

Cute and attractive that doesn’t really work - no such thing, like how salty is no salt.

Really, it is such a matter of taste, like which Chinese resturant has the best sweet and sour pork. ( I like ‘A’ because their S and S pork is more sweet. I like ‘B’ because theirs is more sour. I like ‘C’ because theirs is just the right balance.)

All of you young whippersnappers with your Sci-fi babes from the '90s on. You can’t know what you missed in the '80s because, as far as I know, nobody is re-running Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (which is probably just as well, 'cause it was pretty awful). It did, however, give us Col. Wilma Deering, as played by the incomparable Erin Gray:

And, she still looks pretty damn good at age 58:

Skiffy ran it not too long ago.

And, she still looks pretty damn good at age 58:

BIDDI-BIDDI!

Check and Mate. Game Over. Starbuccaneer WINNER!!!

She was righteous hot in the ‘Space Vampire’ episode:

Let’s not forget the Princess Ardala:

I was a pubescent male at the time and she awoken my nether region.
