That teaser after the premiere not enough for you? Us either! Here’s the GWC thread to discuss the upcoming episode.
Oh well, not much sense in posting my thoughts in three or four different threads for S4E03, so I’m just gonna write them down here:
-
The comet Starbuck referred to, might that be Halley’s Comet? And can we infer something about the time frame of the series from the fact that HC was IN the solar system?
-
The “triple star” thing got me very confused. Cause that must be Alpha Centauri A/B + Proxima Centauri, right? Does Halley’s Comet travel trough Alpha Centauri as well?
-
We don’t know much about the FTL drive systems, but what if Starbuck traveled to Earth by a more conventional means, say something that didn’t make “jumps” but actually “flew” or “drove” her to Earth at a speed approximately the speed of light? I’m getting at the TWIN PARADOX here, the time dilation stemming from the fact that moving clocks tick slower than an observer’s clock - if Starbuck was traveling at a very high speed, it may be that only six hours went by for her whereas for Galactica, it really was two months because of the twin paradox.
And by the way, I hated the way Roslin was handling her job as a leader in that episode, her task is to explore all possible means to get to Earth and she could at least have given Starbuck a Raptor to prove her point.
In the teaser a Sharon says “They’re in the ___ with the humans.” I can’t make out what she said there - does anyone know?
Not sure…so I used a random word generator ala mad libs to complete the sentence
They’re in the “porridge” with the humans
Somebody seems to be just a wee bit hungover…
I’m here, posting the “important” questions and then it quickly disintegrates to “porridge.”
I’m just waiting for someone to say “IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN”
Wait…when Germans are hungover they do Mad Libs? There is a leap in logic here I am not following.
Hach…
I give up. Instead of a snappy comeback, I’ll just eat pizza.
i thought of that as well…seems like they need to test her “new” viper to see what it can do…
i wondered if they were trying to suggest that she flew through a wormhole or some such thing in that nebula…
but also, what about the whole ship of lights theory from last season- in old bsg, the apollo, starbuck and sheba only remember fragments of the path to earth …but not their experiences in the ship of lights…seems like this matches starbucks experience now…and could explain how the ship is “new”…
I think its interesting that even though Roslin has become more authoritarian in her political role, she has shown that she can come around and see the error in her ways in the end (i.e., Dirty Hands). However, now her role as religious leader/prophet is being challenged by the return of Starbuck and I bet she is going to be even more intransigent on this issue. If people can be bull-headed in politics, when it comes to religion…
It’s interesting that they haven’t dumped Starbuck’s Viper into space. Didn’t they do that with the Raptor Athena and Six used to escape the basestar?
That is the one thing I can’t wrap my head around. Why is the Viper not only new…but the exact one she left in, matching tail number, insignia, etc.
Hold on a frakkin second, I made a joking post awhile ago saying that Starbuck kills Roslin in the second episode but…if she doesn’t then why is everyone in dress uniforms in the hanger deck?!
the viper is the final cylon?
No, no Galactica is the final cylon
And in the same idea thread, is Starbuck new as well (as in physically a new Starbuck with same memories)
Weird one is though, why hasn’t Kara talked to anyone about what happened in Maelstrom w/ Head Leoben? It was a big part of why she went into the gas giant, but she just shrugs it off as “I took some hits and blacked out” - her holding back seems like Boomer holding back when she was trying to report that she had a positive signal for water in “Water” back in Season 1.

I didn’t catch that it was the same ship. Maybe I’m wrong but i thought they were implying that it’s a different ship but with the same markings.
I think KMehthas might be on to something.
Since Kara’s Viper exploded, unless time travel is involved, it can’t be the same ship.
chief says that kara’s viper does not have a scratch or ding on it…this after she was in the battle…how likely is it that she would not have any damage to her ship during -even a short- battle?
I wondered that, too, but–and maybe I’m being overly nitpicky on details here–if it was a case of the twin paradox, Kara should have only aged six hours as well, right? But her hair definitely grew A LOT in between “Maelstrom” and “He That Believeth in Me”:
“Maelstrom” hair:
“He That Believeth in Me” hair:
So either A) Two months really did pass for Kara; B) Kara did experience time dilation, but somebody put her in a new body with longer hair; or C) I’m overthinking this WAY too much.
Boy, I can’t say my reaction to Kara would have been all that different from Roslin’s in this case. Even if Kara isn’t a Cylon, there are too many gaping holes in her story that Kara herself can’t explain to give Kara carte blanche–especially when carte blanche means taking the Fleet back to the place where the Cylons nearly just blew them to kingdom come. Even Kara starts to wonder what she is and why she knows what she knows by the time she talks to Anders. I think Roslin had the right idea of not jumping into Kara’s plan (although Kara doesn’t really even have much of a plan per se, does she?) without thinking things through first, maybe try to put some of the missing pieces together before committing to a potentially dangerous new course of action.
That said, I wasn’t thrilled with her decision to keep jumping along the heading that they used to get from the Eye of Jupiter to the Ionian Nebula. I thought everybody was expecting to find another signpost at the nebula, like a beacon or another clue a la the Temple of Five. I can understand why one wouldn’t want to risk everything on the hunch that Kara was the signpost, but I don’t get why Roslin is assuming that there wasn’t a signpost there at all just because they don’t think they found one, especially since they didn’t have much chance to look around; frankly, it surprised me that she wasn’t as adamant as Kara was about going back to the nebula to find the next clue. I think the Fleet should have made enough jumps to put some distance between themselves and the Cylons and then stopped and took a good, hard look at their options instead of picking a direction and hoping it’s right.
I cannot wait to see Roslin and Starbuck square off as the Dueling Leaders; they’re both incredibly strong, stubborn people, and only one of them can be right in this situation. I would also really like to see Roslin be put into a situation where she questions whether or not she’s really the Dying Leader. It’s been such an integral part of her identity and something that’s given her the confidence to make some of those unilateral decisions that I think the possibility of that being taken away from her might make her re-evaluate how she’s led the Fleet, not to mention create plenty of angst, especially now that she might be dying again.
Yeah, maybe she didn’t tell anyone because she honestly doesn’t remember the visions. It’s odd that not only does Kara become less clear on where Earth is the farther they jump from the nebula, but she also becomes less and less sure of herself and her story. On the flight deck, it seems like everything makes sense except for the time discrepancy. Then when she talks with Roslin, Adama, and Lee, she can’t seem to remember how she got back, but on top of that, it seems like she’s a bit surprised that she can’t remember how she got there, like the memories are getting fuzzier the way dreams do after you wake up.
I’m not sure which thread is the best to post this in, as it refers to things I’ve picked up from different conversations. Here goes:
-
Baltar’s Cylon Detector did, of course, correctly ID Boomer as a Cylon. But I don’t ever recall confirmation that a test was run on Tigh. The last we saw of Baltar with the detector was when he cleared Ellen of being a Cylon. In the same episode (Tigh me up, tigh me down) Baltar said it would take 61 years to test everybody. I suggest that he stopped testing and started pumping out ‘passing’ results for everybody; Baltar isn’t the type to bog himself down with a task as redundant as an 11 hour test.
-
In Baltar-time order, he was a) on trial PLEADING for his life b) acquitted c) hurried out the door d) rejected and abandoned by his attorneys e) walking down a hallway f) ushered through some corridors g) introduced to the Balcubines h) talks to head-six i) beds a hot chick j) naps k) meets a sick kid l) gets the beard shaved m) gets attacked n) pleads to be killed o) get saved p) meets a healthy kid. In this sequence of events, Baltar goes from selfish to selfless, all in less time than it takes to administer a cylon-detector test. With the year-long break, it is funny to think that this happened so quickly. Anyhow, I drew up the following formula for lab-testing: Selfish+Baltar+a+b+c+d+e+f+g+h+i+j+k+l+m+n+o+p=Selfless+Baltar
Feel free to do perform some arithmetic and eliminate some variables. -
Though my theory that this past episode would be a 42 minute commercial for Domino’s was a slightly off the mark, I’m confident enough in my new theory to pull my head out of the sand and post the new theory. I am extremely confident that Derek (the sick boy) will be revealed as the final Cylon. Furthermore, he will be revealed to be the leader of all Cylon. I ZZZ! Ahem, as I was saying: I base this theory largely on his contraction of encephalitis. And yes, I know that humans can ‘catch’ it (but they didn’t) and yes, I know that any cylon who contracted it didn’t recover. What we do know, though, is that the strain that contaminated the basestar was feared to be communicable via ‘download’. Is it possible that the cylonZ were able to quarantine and develop a cure for the disease, which they could also transmit as an ‘upload’? By sequence of events, we see Baltar tell Head-Six (whom I now believe is a Chip-In-The-Head) that he was truly ready to give himself to God-Solo; Head-Six heard this and sent the news via transmission, the news is well-received by the cylons and they upload the cure to Derek who quickly gets better. Now the cylons have mobilized Baltar as an agent of their bidding and Derek is now to be celebrated by Baltar’s gang as evidence of miracles…which would give Derek ammo to manipulate nearly everybody.
Food for thought: Derek wasn’t claimed as any of the women as their birth-child and may have been a sole-survivor of the original attacks who was ‘adopted’; or he could have been planted by the cylons as a sole-survivor. This kid has fifth cylon written all over him.
Now some ‘housekeeping’ issues to dismiss in order to protect my theory:
a) “We’ve seen the final five in glimmering silhouette. They are all adult sized.” Answer - Remember Duck Tales? Remember Huey, Dewey and Louie? Remember how they stood on each other’s shoulders, threw on a trench coat, glasses, and fedora and never got ID’d at the adult-novelty/comic book shop? Yeah: Derek, Erik, and Za— I’ve said too much.
b) “So, Head Six is transmitting to the other seven cylon models, who then take action to ‘heal’ Derek as part of their plan, but you say Derek is a final-fiver, whom the cylons say they can’t think about, and if they couldn’t think about him how could they communicate with him, plant him the fleet, and make him the center of the Balcubines attention, your theory doesn’t hold water.” Answer - First of all, use less commas next time. Second, your point is valid; you should point this error out to the writers and see what they have to say about this. Remember, they are the ones who decided that Derek is the final cylon and cylon-leader; I’m just the guy telling you what’s going to happen.

RE: the un-aired Domino’s episode. In fairness, they did film multiple-beginnings to Season 4 to make sure that even the actors weren’t sure how it would really begin. The alternate beginning of Season 4 will be a bonus feature on the Blu-Ray version of Season 4. The Domino’s episode is real. The Domino’s episode is canon.

Isn’t saying “I cut myself shaving” a bit redundant. Who on BSG hasn’t cut themselves shaving?
