It was on the page when I clicked New Posts - and it was titled appropriate to what it was but I just wasn’t thinking it would really be what it said - and then there were all these pictures - that I’d probably get fired for viewing at work. You missed it man…
I clicked on report post - and it was already deleted. Admins you ROCK!!
Let me state the very, very obvious. Porn is very, very, very, very, very easy to find on the Internets. Ain’t no need for it here (gutter perhaps, but not porn).
Now here’s a stupid question: Would the GWC Forum be less of a target for SpamBots if it WASN’T called a Forum?
My high school class used to have Forum that people would use to get and touch and communicate with one another when there was an upcomming High School Reunion. But they eventually had to shut it down because it became ruined by spammers. I always wondered: Do spam programs actively seek out stuff on the web that are CALLED Forums, bulletin boards, etc.
That means the Spambots are drilling down quickly and will eventually attacks us in Zion! Unless Neo can stop them in time!
Correct, correct and correct. A global search and replace could be done on the backend database to update the links…but that is sketch. These bots are designed to infiltrate vBulletin specifically, so I suspect they are looking for tags or other identifiers for this bulletin board. I also suspect the cat is out of the bag, in that once one 'bot finds a forum that meets certain parameters it circulates or sells that information to others.
In short the point of entry needs to be shored up. Until such time that those defenses can be raised we need to keep on nailing these guys they appear.
Take special note of new users. Check their profiles for links to ugly places. I have banned a few of the bots this way before they could do any damage. PM me when you see them and I’ll take them out, hopefully before they can spread their filth.
Something on a serious note. Over at the 1UP forum they use to help combat Spambots is not letting newbs create a thread until you have something like 5 or 10 posts. I dont know if thats something you could do here. but it might be worth looking into.
That is a great idea Mr. Lister, Sir. You get a curry bap on toast for your insight.
I researched and vBulletin doesn’t have this function built into it, but there is a free add on we may implement. Chuck will review the specs and call the ball.
That would definitely eliminate the current issue. But what would prevent the spam from just spreading into random posts within already established threads? Not that that wouldn’t eventually happen anyway…
