Rewatches After The Goodness Is Over

We are fast approaching episode ten of the latest series of BSG. If Sciffy stick to their guns and do not broadcast the final ten until next year, how do people feel about a Farscape rewatch?

This series is one of my favourite programs ever and I belief that Chuck and Audra have had very little facetime with this program.

Also Red Dwarf has been suggested as another rewatch to fill in the gaps.

I have included a poll, and hope that sean, Chuck and Audra fill be influenced enough to make the right choice.

Thanks for your participation.

  1. Baltar is not on the list. Granted it could become somewhat tiresome to watch nothing but Baltar week after week, but we NEED the Baltar option.

  2. The one show that I miss on this list is “Space: Above and Beyond” - I’m sure that many fans of Battlestar especially would like that show - for so many reasons.

How can you say that? Baltar is perfect. You are perfect. I am perfect. We are all perfect.

As you suggested, I took a look at it’s Netflix blurb. Here it is:
“It’s 2063, and the people of Earth are engaged in a war with a race of aliens determined to annihilate mankind. Led by Lt. Nathan West (Morgan Weisser) and Lt. Cooper Hawkes (Rodney Rowland), the inexperienced 58th Squadron finds itself on the front lines of an intergalactic war unlike any other. Created by “The X Files” producers Glen Morgan and James Wong, this gritty sci-fi series earned a loyal cult following in its first and only season.”

Sounds pretty good. It is animated, right? Not sure that could get as fired up about an animated show (aside from South Park) as I could about a live action show.

Nope, live action.

Oh! Well if that’s case, I’m definitely gonna give SA&B a shot. First I think I need to acquire the ability to freeze time, otherwise when am I gonna fine time to watch all these great shows?

First off, I hope and expect that Chuck, Sean and Audra would pick whatever best suits their tastes and interests (and I’m sure they will). They’re doing the heavy lifting on GWC, so I would be bothered if they felt compelled to do a re-watch of anything just because a poll convinced them to.

But anyway, here’s some of my thots on the shows listed.

Farscape: Never seen it, but here it’s great, and I’d love to give it a try

Dr Who (Reimagined Series): I’ll be watching this anyway—starting Season 3 now.

Red Dwarf: Seen a couple episodes, wouldn’t mind getting into it deeper.

Battlestar Galactica (1978): I actually started a thread suggesting this as a rewatch candidate. I’ve since then changed my mind. TV audience tastes have evolve so much, that it’s almost unwatchable. I do like the mockery factor that this opens up though.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Watched this pretty thoroughly when it aired, and it’s great. But I might get bored rewatching it. Seems like, been there, done that.

Blake’s 7: I’ve actually been doing my own rewatch of this over the past several months: Just finished Season 1. It holds up surprisingly well for an old show. Pretty dark for back then too.

Babylon 5: Never followed this show when it aired. But after hearing some of Sean’s appreciation of it, I would give it a shot.

Futurama: I’ve seen a couple episodes in the past couple months. Funny stuff.

Now hang on a sec, if everybody’s perfect, how can I be an elitist???

Put Space at the top of your list. It’s only one season and it had so much potential. Remember, it’s mid-90s scifi, so the effects look somewhat crude in comparison with BSG, but the stories were wonderfully told and the overall premise was utterly rich in potential. They had a mysterious alien enemy, they had interior social issues with a sub-society of artificially created humans, they had tensions with a ruthless company who knew more about the war than it let on and all the episodes were pretty dark and grim and interpreted ages-old themes of war, glory, loyalty, humanism, etc.

Oftentimes, the mood of the show was very quiet and sad and there was one episode that was told almost completely in silence, and then they often incorporated old poetry.

It’s really worth trying out if you’re into BSG, because it’s straight military scifi the way it should be.

I’m sold.
But why do all the characters look like they’re 19 years old?

If I remember correctly, some of them were draftees, but I’m not sure. But yeah, the pilots/marines are all young officers - cannon fodder, if you will.

The Colonel who was in charge of the squadron was an older dude - and a very interesting character:

This works well for me as I recently got hold of the S:AAB boxset and am working my way through the episodes now.

Although it only lasted one season S:AAB is very near the top of my list (if not at the top) of all time favourite SF shows.

Back in the day I was such a fan I created a Vansen skin and voice pack for Unreal Tournament:

These days I make do with having the theme tune as my ring tone.

Oh, and the reason they are all young is they joined (voluntarily apart from Hawkes) as cadets and were put through intensive training when the war broke out.

Hey ho, let’s go!

It pains me to do this, but I’m gonna mail my Netflix DVD of Henry V back to Netflix and put SA&B in the queue for my next DVD.

Space: Above and Beyond is my all-time favorite other than BSG. It was produced by those responsible for X-Files and, like BSG, feels relevant today.

If someone could tell me how to edit the poll after creation, I will add it to the list. I remember seeing this program. It was by the same writers as X-Files.

I can’t quote a source but my understanding is that it was cancelled because Space Above and Beyond, as the series was called in the UK, cost double the money for half the ratings per episode of Stargate SG1. The rest is history.

I bet you won’t regret it. I’m itching to hear your thots on that show.

Absolutely, I’m willing to say that with the war in Iraq, Space will resonate with a lot of contemporary viewers.

Hm, I don’t think you can add to a poll after you posted it, unfortunately, but if we had maybe an entire thread devoted to Space, we could move the discussion over there.

I voted for Deep Space Nine because I’m not a Trekkie and I figure that’s the only way I’ll watch it, but I’m really okay with anything since it will be fun with all the GWC company.

Amazing show. Never thought I could ever love a puppet as a fully developed character. Not to mention: Head Scorpius.

Babylon 5: Never followed this show when it aired. But after hearing some of Sean’s appreciation of it, I would give it a shot.

Special effects are definitely dated. Rudimentary CGI shows its age. Story starts off slowly, but revelations build upon each other until it reaches a crescendo. The characters are very complex, and you’ll care about all of them eventually, even the ones you start off hating. The fifth season is a bit unsteady, due to network meddling and politics. And Head Vorlons!

Some are more perfect than others, obviously.

Because young & hot = ratings. At least in theory.

At the least, Deep Space Nine would be more content from a world of Ronald D. Moore…

If you’re not a Trekkie, DS9 is the only one you’ll ever need to watch. It’s the best.

That sounds great! And since it’s only one season it could be perfect for a 7-8 month haitus.

Also, Thot, I have never been a South Park fan but some of the episodes from the past 2-3 seasons have been amazingly good. While most shows, especially animated ones, really nosedive past about season 10, South Park seems to be getting better.

I voted for DS9 since I watched only about 70% of its original run and would love to see it with all of you, with secondary votes for Red Dwarf (haven’t seen at all but if Audra likes it that much it’s gotta be good) and Futurama (I’ve seen about 1/2 of it)

Okay, The Dark Crystal characters didn’t emote much. But c’mon, Yoda?
(but this from a guy who gets chocked up at the end of The Muppet Movie)
