Life-size Barbie gets real women talking

Student presents the iconic doll’s proportions in a provocative new context

The goal in creating Barbie’s likeness was to start conversation. “Talking about eating disorders is taboo to many people, and this made people talk about it,” Slayen said. “It’s a shocking image. A lot of people have seen it, and it’s started debates,” she said, particularly after she wrote about it for the Huffington Post. “Her proportions are not 100 percent correct, but her look is not invalid.”

“As a pop-cultural icon, Barbie is often used as art to express one’s own personal opinions and views,” a Mattel spokesperson said in an email. “Girls see female body images everywhere today and it’s critical that parents and caregivers provide perspective on what they are seeing. It’s important to remember that Barbie is a doll who stands 11.5 inches tall and weighs 7.25 ounces — she was never modeled on the proportions of a real person.”

peep it before WB yanks from the Youtubes

EDIT - just found out this could be a fan made (which is wierd since WB yanked it from YT very quickly)

The head looks off. I think they got one of those hair-dressing Barbie heads, but it’s not the same scale.

“Her proportions are not 100 percent correct, but her look is not invalid.”

Kinda invalidates the purpose don’t it?

Here’s a different take on the ‘life sized Barbie’ thing.

Doctor Who actress Sladen dies

"Doctor Who actress Elisabeth Sladen has died of cancer at the age of 63, the BBC has confirmed.

She joined the programme in 1973 and became one of the most popular companions in her role as Sarah Jane Smith. In 2007 she was given her own spin-off series, the Sarah Jane Adventures, which introduced her to a new generation of fans.

Tributes have been pouring in for the Liverpool-born actress, known to her friends and family as Lis.

Russell T Davies, creator of The Sarah Jane Adventures, which won this year’s RTS Award for best children’s drama, said all those involved in the series had been left “reeling” at news of her death.

He said: "I absolutely loved Lis. She was funny and cheeky and clever and just simply wonderful.

“The universe was lucky to have Sarah Jane Smith; the world was lucky to have Lis.”

Sladen starred in Doctor Who alongside Jon Pertwee, the third doctor, and his successor Tom Baker.

She then returned to the series on a number of occasions over the years before her own CBBC show was created, in which she starred as an investigative journalist trying to defend Earth from extraterrestrial threats.

It had not been widely known that she had been suffering from ill health. She leaves behind her husband, the actor Brian Miller, and daughter Sadie.

Doctor Who lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat said she was a “ferociously talented actress”."

Fans campaign to send M. Night Shyamalan to film school

"If you’ve been disappointed with the movies M. Night Shyamalan has turned out ever since his 1999 blockbuster “The Sixth Sense,” you’re not alone. Three former fans have launched a campaign to send the Razzie winner back to film school.

According to PopEater, author/copywriter Chris Baker and his two pals are trying to raise $150,000 to help Shyamalan become a better filmmaker. Baker got the idea when he saw a trailer for “Devil” last year and the audience laughed at the phrase “From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan.”

After learning that Shyamalan was planning to make the futuristic thriller “1000 A.E.” with Will and Jaden Smith, Baker and his buddies launched M. Night School, a website where fellow concerned fans can donate funds to help the writer/director finesse his craft.

“If we all donate just one dollar, we can send M. Night back to NYU so he gets the help we all so desperately need,” reads the site, which has raised approximately $540 thus far.
