I second Pikes comment…so much WIN in this vid on so many levels
Why is Hollywood making the crappy movies that they are? And why all the freaking sequels? Take a look at this article from GQ, it is very good.
My favorite paragraph:
In Hollywood, though, not all quadrants are created equal. If you, for instance, have a vagina, you’re pretty much out of luck, because women, in studio thinking, are considered a niche audience that, except when Sandra Bullock reads a script or Nicholas Sparks writes a novel, generally isn’t worth taking the time to figure out. And if you were born before 1985… well, it is my sad duty to inform you that in the eyes of Hollywood, you are one of what the kids on the Internet call “the olds.” I know—you thought you were one of the kids on the Internet. Not to the studios, which have realized that the closer you get to (or the farther you get from) your thirtieth birthday, the more likely you are to develop things like taste and discernment, which render you such an exhausting proposition in terms of selling a movie that, well, you might as well have a vagina.
I’ve been hesitant to say this openly but I’m sick of all the comic book (and re-makes of comic book) movies coming out. I’ve been trying to put my finger on why and this author states it. He calls the new demographic the “I won’t grow up” demographic. These films are being designed for immature, undiscerning consumers. That insults any intelligence I might have, not to mention any possible creativity I might have festering. Don’t get me wrong. I am not bashing comic book movies. It’s the implicit intent. I felt the same way during the late 90s toward Star Trek. If felt (to me, anyway) like the importance was on trying to sell a product instead of challenge the thots and ideals of the audience. When something comes along that provokes your intellect, it should not be considered rare.

I hear you, I like movies that challenge me. That make me think, and that don’t spoon feed me information or hold my hand. I guess that is one of the reasons I have to look overseas for entertainment so often. And I think this is the reason Inception did so well at the Box Office, it did not talk down to its audience. It presented a number of puzzles and conundrums and challenged us to solve them, using the information and the rules that had been presented.
And you brought up a good point with Trek. The producers of Trek did a real no-no with their fans on a few occassions, by cranking out movies that were formed by commitee in a hurry to turn a buck rather than waiting until the right story came along. And the fans rebeled. Trek fans are very intelligent, and will not tolerate being treated any other way. If you write a sloppy story, or create rules within your SF universe and then break them, or present slock science. Expect to be called to the floor for it!
Trek fans are not ATM’s, and you cannot simply slap a Trek logo on something and expect us to buy it. I will be shocked if the next Trek movie makes as much money as the last one, they burned us sooo bad in 09 I doubt many will give them a second chance to do so again. The Texans love to shout ‘Remember the Alamo’! For me it is ‘Red Matter’!!!
We need more Nolan’s…
evidently, Christopher McQuarrie is being picked to write a live action script.
However, there is also rumor that Lucasfilm wants in

IMHO - they should let the live action Japanese version do what it needs to and leave it. Looking forward to seeing it stateside
Hey, I liked Star Trek 2009. I thought it was a fun movie that focused on the characters. The overall plot wasn’t terribly good, but most Star Trek films have the same exact problem. To paraphrase RDM (regarding the BSG finale), “It’s about the characters, stupid!”
Now that all of that is in place, I hope the second movie steers away from a cartoon movie villain and gets more into exploration and phenomena. I want more SPACE THE FINAL FRONTIER. But as a reboot, the last movie wasn’t bad, though I would’ve liked another good 5-10 minutes explaining what happened between the prologue and the proper start of the movie.
Completely agree. Trek '09 was fun movie. I’ve been a die hard since…welll, ever. ,and I really liked it. Up there with my favorite Trek films like II and IV.
