I’m curious as to how this relates to other films ‘of the Spanish civil war,’ there are a lot of them and I’ve only seen a few. The ones I’ve seen always make me cry. Sigh.

What I like in particular is that, despite all of the scary monsters in the “fantasy” world, most of the horror actually occurs in the “real” world.
Look how intimate this scene is shot. So well done. I can’t say that enough.
There is no dubbing. It’s Spanish, with or without subtitles. The director was very adamant about that. In theory, there will never be an authorized English-dubbed version.
He’s pretty much creepy in every way throughout the movie.
Nice touch with the Castillian pronunciations.
OMG I loved this film when I saw it before but tonight I am watching in HD goodness. Keep the compliments coming because they are well deserved. Every shot is like an eyegasm! I love this lighting! 
According to del Toro, this scene (bottle beating) is taken from an actual historic account. This happened to a store owner.
Especially the colors used. Cold blues and greens in the violent real world, Warm oranges and reds in the fantasy world.
And as I recall, he did the subtitles himself? Or did I make that up.
If he did, I certainly don’t blame him - film subtitles tend to be terribly done.
They’re at once familiar (many Spanish friends) and amusing (we don’t speak like that around here).
It would certainly fit with the practices of Franco’s people. And basically every other dictatorship I’ve ever read about.

The face-crushing scene is probably one of the most horrific things I’ve seen on film – in no small part because of the complete lack of emotion shown by the Captain. :eek:

In the cavern, see how the green pops off the screen, they used a filter on the camera for that. Lovely.
The faun is make-up, not CGI, even the legs!!
point of interest (and information): fauno’s language is very archaic. Imagine Elizabethan English, to modern English. It’s also very common in fairy tales (ha, ha) to use that register.
Not to mention he is completely wrong. I get a very violent feeling watching an injustice like that. :mad:
