Wouldn’t you know it…my tv conked out this weekend…so I have no way of watching this even if I wanted to.
Too bad. Somehow I am sure the highlights will turn up somewhere.

LOLOLOL …my turn to leave the door open ! (<20)
If you know what I mean
I totally agree with, speaking as an also mature and world weary adult in my early 40s.
But just so I don’t abandon the direction toward the gutter altogther, let me say this: Carrie Fisher in her Slave Leia costume, not one 1/10th as sexy as Sigorney Weaver in her scanty underwear at the end of Alien.
You know…the problem with the term, “Slave Leia” is funny, as being a slave wasn’t her primary role. She was a dancer, at least, that is the clothing she inherited. “Prisoner Leia” or “Dancer Leia” just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
Best getting into a spacesuit scene ever ! And Ripley’s nobody’s victim.
To be honest—even though I think George Lucas is a quirky guy in a lot of ways—I don’t think the “Slave Leia” scene with Jabba the Hut was meant to be gratuitous. In Star Wars IV, V and VI, the story is heavily inspired by the works of Joseph Campbell who wrote “The Hero With A Thousand Faces” and “The Power of Myth” and other stuff. And the Jabba the Hut/Slave Leia is a direct reference to the mythology (in Western culture) of the Dragon and his Horde. The Dragon, in folklore tales, is a creature that hords piles of gold and jewels and beautiful princesses, even though the dragon can’t do anything with the gold, jewels and beautiful women. He just keeps it all for the greedy, selfish desire of keeping them.
You’ve probably heard the story of how, George Lucas one day, invited Joeseph Campbell to Skywatcher Ranch, and together Lucas and Campbell watched Star Wars in the morning, Empire in the afternoon, and Return of the Jedi at Night. It was the first time Campbell had seen the films, and he was blown way with how Lucas had incoporated all the major mythlogical themes the Campbell had written and researched so much about.
Aw, thanks guys!
that little anecdote somehow slipped past me, thanks for the heads up!
Two thoughts:
First, 26 professional “slave Leias” don’t seem nearly as sexy as a single amateur 'Leia. Somehow the effect is just diluted a bit. It kind of reminds me of the Jimmy Buffett story about waking up on the tour bus after a long night, looking out the window, and seeing Elvis. Startled, he ran out of the bus square into an Asian Elvis. And a black Elvis. And a female Elvis. It turns out the hotel was hosting an impersonators convention.
I think what makes this type of amateur cosplay so attractive is that these women enjoy the sexiness of the costume and where it comes from. They do this on their own time out of enjoyment, and probably know more about the character than most of us. That’s sexy.
That said, I’m more of an Aayla fan. Twi’leks are quite attractive, and Aayla in particular seems like such an interesting character. (This is, incidentally, why I can’t bring myself to play clone troopers in Battlefront or such. Bastards!) When I finally make it to a con with lots of costuming, I’m going to have my picture taken with as many Aaylas as possible. I promise to post the pix to the pool.
i gotta go with you on the Twi’lek attraction, Chuck. i think there’s something about the whole blue/green skin thing that does it for me. plus, a lady Jedi is very cool indeed.
well i tried watching the first 5 minutes of it, but it was just too ridiculous to bear.
Yeah, no matter how much they offer up at the geek altar, it still is a major network. Major network = statistically 100% craaaaaaap.
Oh well, I tried to venture down to the pedestrian channels for a little bit.
I’m watching the original BSG episode ‘War of the gods’. Better choice I gather.
If all that was on tv was a clip show of Muffit the daggit besides this Deal or No Deal…
well, i give NBC credit for the Office and 30 Rock, which are 2 of the 3 sitcoms i’ve watched regularly since Seinfeld ended (the 3rd being Arrested Development :(). plus, ABC has Lost. but yea, i’d say about 97% craaaaaaaaaaaap.
I rewatched Alien a couple of weeks ago and was reminded how much that scnene really turned me off actually, she was too boney. It really wasn’t that attractive a shot of her.
If you want to watch a sexy female character who doesn’t take any craaaaaaaaaaappp from anybody, watch La Femme Nikita, also just called Nikita. It’s a great French movie from director Luc Besson.
