Let’s be totally honest here:

[li]40 Women is Slave Leia bikinis = Awesome[/li][li]all the other characters pimping themselves out on stage = I die a little bit inside[/li][*]Carrie Fisher showing up = God save us (cross your fingers she doesn’t sing)[/ul]I feel like this is going to be a trainwreck. An embarrassing worse than the Star Wars Christmas Special awful. This is going to be my Raiders of the Lost ark moment I am sure…I will have the TV on but I will force myself not to watch.
Wow. You don’t like Raiders?
I was thinking about the end of the movie where they open the Ark of the Covenant and he yells to Marion, “Don’t look!”
My gods, does Lucas really think SW needs more exposure ? I know they’re gearing up for the new SW stuff, but geeze !
This has CRINGE written all over it.
Maybe Carrie will wig out (pun?) and go bonkers and start slugging people.
as much as i agree with all the reluctance expressed here, i must say, DorND models in Slave Leia attire makes it instantly watchable for me.
To prove the validity of your statement, just ask yourself the question: what wouldn’t Slave Leia attires make instantly watchable? I’d go so far as to say that I’d even watch, say, American Gladiators, if they had Slave Leias.
Audra is so going to kick our collective asses.
I’ll be a vote saying that slave Leias would make me NOT watch it. I mean, c’mon, there’s so much wrong with that.
Something as hot as Slave Leia can’t be much wrong…:o
well, AG was already watchable (at times) for its comedic value, but that would probably put it in my Must-See list!
SO SAY WE ALL!
I know this is all in good fun, but still. Slave Leia bothers me. I know why Lucas set her up like that (hmmmmmmm let’s also ask why Padme turned all wimpy in the prequels, too), but the objectification of women combined with slavery? eeeh yeah. Definitely not hot.
Judging from the last 'cast, she will barely notice.
yes, it is all in good fun, and to be fair, objectification/slavery is not hot…but Carrie Fisher certainly was hot.
Hm. Men are objectified just as much. Have you seen all the comments about, say, Lee and the towel, Lee and his abs, or Helo and his whatever it is that makes Helo hot?
I would bet my geek card on the fact that most or all of us male geeks here are very civilized and gentlemanly specimens of the male sex who generally treat women very well.
One of the reasons I like GWC is that it is friendly. Good people. I stupidly ventured to look at the Skiffy boards a few times and wow. Just, wow. It’s great to see a scifi community that can be civil.
Objectification of any individual based upon characteristics that they can’t change (sex, race, disability, sexuality, etc) strikes me as very unsexy, and in my moral universe, wrong. That said, appreciating the beauty of the human body isn’t wrong. If I may misquote my beloved evilTory, we were made perfectly. Our bodies are amazing, and aesthetically pleasing.
With reference to the posts - I have seen the men objectified too, and I’m generally not a fan of it, but that doesn’t mean that I haven’t occasionally fallen into the “omg so hot!” mode. What is bothersome about Slave Leia is not only the original objectification, but all that goes along with it. Lucas’ comments about Carrie Fisher’s weight, the way the image has been appropriated for pornography, and the immense weight that allusions to slavery carry with them.
And as an aside: keep in mind the way women are often portrayed in scifi (and it’s part of why I love BSG so much) and the way women fans are treated… this is a particularly, well, I don’t even know what to call it. Read about it for yourselves - women’s bodies in SciFi are definitely still contested territory.
And right sexy!!
anyone else think that the entirety of Howie Mandel’s body hair resides beneath his lower lip?
That happens to be true, he got a problem with hair. Heeeyyyy! Did you know that already and playing with me? Wait…oh no…imagination is going to Howie’s nether region…must stop…Slave Leia…third grade teacher’s cleavage…Baywatch…Aeryn Sun hippie…Stand by me vomit scene…Phew that did it. That was a close one.
Passionate comments about the portrayal of women in Sci-Fi as a segueway for Fat Bastard? Thank the gods a new episode airs tonight to occupy our minds with other things!
Kidding aside, I think Casilda makes some good points and I agree with giving a thumbs down to the further commercialization of Star Wars for a buck or publicity.
