Obi-wans death

Before The O-ster got perished, he told Vader that he would become more powerful than he (vader) could imagine. What did he mean?? hey i’ll agree that the ghostin’ to anywhere in the universe is pretty sick, but whats it good for?? Other than parlor tricks and a guest spot on Ghost hunters Intergallactic??

rog

What he means is he will become one with the force. It’s confusing from the one liner in EP.3, but I guess he learns this trick from Qui-Gon while watching over Luke in between 3&4.

Still being able to mentor Luke from the grave is a pretty neat trick and was pretty instrumental in the ‘death’ of Vader and redemption of Anakin…

Palpatine was wrong…

The power to save yourself from death… CAN be learned from a jedi.

This isn’t explained in great detail in the movies other than a throw away line in EP.3. Apparently Qui-Gon is one of the rare Jedi who learned how to commune with the force in such a way that he is absorbed into the force upon death. If you remember in Ep.2 when Anakin goes off on the sand people, you hear Qui-Gon’s voice when Yoda senses Anakin’s pain etc. He teaches Yoda and Obi-Wan how to do this while they are in exile.

A Jedi ghost doesn’t pop in whenever he wishes. Other than what we see in the movies there are rare instances in the EU where Jedi Ghosts turn up. I think Anakin appears to Leia in the Novel that immediately follows ROTJ. In the first book of the Thrawn Trilogy, Heir to the Empire, Obi-Wan appears to Luke one final time and says something like his ability to talk with Luke can no longer continue because his power is diminishing or something. I can’t really recall the whole conversation. I’m sure someone who has read the book recently can comment on that.

You mean Jedi can’t peep at will on the living?

Kinda takes all the fun out of it.

Was there any explanation why Qui-Gon didn’t disappear like Obi-Wan and Yoda when he died?

I’m sure there is somewhere in the newer materiel. I’m not as current on the EU as I used to be when it comes to some of the newer books and comics. I’ve read some of the materiel, but nothing like when I used to be on top of the EU in my younger days.

Technically, the Force Ghost trick doesn’t “save” you from death. To become “one with the Force” you have to, presumably, die first (or be consumed by the Force in such a way that causes “death” I guess). After that, you can only stick around for a while before you fade away or something.

In the Tales of the Jedi comics—without giving away any spoilers—there is a Jedi turned Sith who eventually becomes a Jedi again, whose body disappears in the force just like obi wan when he dies. Another jedi remarks that this only happens to true Jedi masters. I assume it means a Jedi that truly understands the force and lives his/her life by its will, may become one with it. So if a Jedi’s body doesn’t become one with the force I would assume it to mean they were not a true master.

Wasn’t it Qui-Gon who discovered the trick? I assume that he did so a bit after the fact.

You don’t always have to disappear. Besides Qui-Gon, Anakin/Vader didn’t disappear either in ROTJ.

back before the prequels, I thot that was because 1) 20+ years of evil not canceled out by last-minute reversal and 2) all that cybernetic crap

Good points D. If you look at Qu i-Gon’s funeral and Anakin’s funeral scenes, they are obviously meant to mirror each other. I just assume it doesn’t matter if your body disappears. Maybe another factor could be what ever philosophy of the force one follows more closely. I know Qui-Gon was a strong believer in the living force and that Yoda was more about the unifying force. I’m not really sure about Obi-Wan and Anakin though.

So this begs the question… how do Jedi Masters evaporate? (ala Yoda and ObiWan)

My holocron fails me. I have no idea really. Maybe, it has something to do with preparing your mind, or your connection to the force, before you die. Yoda and Obi-Wan both knew they were going to die. Qui-Gon and Vader didn’t really expect to die.

Vader knew he was going to die before Luke took the mask off

Hmm perhaps the secret becoming a Jedi ghost has to do with looking into Luke Skywalker’s eyes with your own eyes… haha
(Aside from QuiGon and the jedi before him, All the Jedi Master Ghosts all looked at Luke before they died.)

So then there’s really no ‘point’ to evaporating…

ObiWan and Yoda were just show-offs.

Ha!

I like that answer. Plus Ben has that whole spooky “Use the Force” voice thing going for him too.

From what I understand, the “evaporation” is being one with the Force in the purest fashion possible. I guess they’re consumed by the Force or something. That might explain how Jedi Masters are good at doing it. But that raises a bunch of questions, such as this happening if you overuse the Force and go too far into it, and can Sith Masters also become one with the Force? Or maybe you need to be at peace with yourself, a la Buddhism?

Huh. Now I’m curious to see what the Wookiepedia article says.

EDIT: There’s some stuff in the EU that suggests that when a Jedi’s body doesn’t disappear it means they have something else to do in the physical realm, although I think that’s a bit of a stretch. Also, I’m pretty sure there’s no connection with your body disappearing and showing up as a Force ghost, but I need to double check that.
