I love Neil deGrasse Tyson. He’s what I imagine Carl Sagan would be like were he also a comedian. And black.
Unfortunately arguments from ignorance are ubiquitous. People dont understand how something works and they make something up and think nothing of it. Ill leave my controversy hat at home and just say Im sure we can all think of a few of those commonly made arguments. Science bless Neil.
That’s awesome! I always love a good science rant. I didn’t know he had such an outgoing and passionate personality. It doesn’t really show in the Science Now episodes he does for Nova. Keep it up Dr. Tyson!
Thanks for sharing MercuryShadow…
This is teh awesome. Should be required viewing for second graders.
That is good. thanks for posting.
is there any video of Carl Sagan answering the same question?
As I am sure he would come at it from the same “lack of actual evidence” stance, I would love to compare the two. I would also bet real money that Carl’s answer would end with hope…(they almost always did)
Well he does talk about UFO’s in Chapter 12 of Cosmos: The Encyclopaedia Galactica. But here is a YouTube entry with audio only of him speaking about the Skeptical Enquirer, crop circles, alien abductions, etc…
I kept thinking, while watching the video, that Dr. Tyson should do this kind of thing to religion as well. Just sayin’…
The Crew should get this guy on the 'cast.
I’ll second that! Would love to hear the Crew interview him!
agreed I checked his website and there is a request an interview thing there for press and other media. that seems to apply to gwc. I think it would a great interview.
Sounds good to me. I’ll make that happen. Real question is what to ask him, you don’t ask a man like this for an interview lightly.
maybe just an extension of the cosmos arc. I know its over but still, there could be sagan’s role in scientific education. and Mr. Tyson’s views on inspiring the next generation of scientists.
Awesome! Thanks, Gryper.
Yeah! Or the lag in science education in the U.S. and ways to make it pallatable and fun to kids. He’s so great at talkng about science in a friendly and HUMOROUS way and I’d love to hear how he came to this approach, or whether it’s a natural humor that has led him towards advocacy and teaching.
They could ask about his Cosmos viewing experience, how it affected him personally. Or about the science in science fiction movies/books, how far off the mark is it really. Or as Armando said about the state of science education in the U.S. today. Or about his job as the Director of the the Hayden Planetarium. Or just about life, the Universe and Everything!
I think that call could be a free for all, like the one with Blank (Ted’s band from Scrubs. Isn’t that what they’re called?) and be incredible. Seriously.
“There is no tradition of scientists picketing outside of churches saying ‘That might not necessarily be true!’.”
Haha, this guy is a trip.
I’m wondering if we should rename this thread “The Neil deGrasse Tyson fan club.”
