Mass Effect Strategy - No Spoilers

So, as a relative neophyte to the Mass Effect universe, I wanted to start a discussion regarding overall strategy. My current specific question is regarding team composition in regards to skill weighting. In short: I am missing something and I do not see any documentation on it.

Bionic, Tech and Fighter (something like that) I am not clear on why I would weight my party one way or the other. It is obvious why I would go heavy on fighter…and the only reason I see for going in on tech is so I can decrypt chests. The bionic makes no sense to me. I have a general understanding of what bionic does, but see it as a general liability on a team if I need to choose between bionic and fighter.

It should be noted that my primary character is a straight soldier, I choice I now slightly regret but is fine for gameplay.

Any thoughts?

You don’t really want to weight your party too heavily in either direction. Take someone who’s strong in biotics and someone who’s strong in tech to form a balanced party.

You’ll get into later fights where people constantly dive into cover. If you can remove their cover with someone who has strong biotics, you can shoot them easily. You can set up a combo by throwing a grenade, tossing down stasis (I think that’s the power that sucks people up) and then detonating the grenade. I tend to have Liara max first aid as well.

Tech is great for shutting down mechanical things. You can mess with their cool downs and overheat their weapons. You’ll also be able to hack robots and have them on your side for a while.

Playing soldier does do one thing for you. When you (if you) play again, if you won an achievement for using a certain weapon (say, rifles), if you chose a class that does not have rifle skill, you will get it, so you could have a shotgun wielding adept on your second play through.

Solai - you playing the PC version? I’ve only played about 2 1/2 hours game time so far and it’s cool. I’m mostly confused, but it’s cool!

For my first run through on XBox I played on easy settings (I haven’t played many games of that style so I wanted to make sure I could get the hang of it). I kept my team as myself (soldier), Kaiden Alenko, and the not Ashley chick. The one that’s like all dark that you get in the alley in the wards. I only died a few times so I think it worked out because they were mostly balanced. The biggest thing for me I think was to perfect equipping weapons and upgrades and figuring out which skill points to work on.

Also, a question for anyone else out there who’s played it on XBox…is the add on from XBox Live worth it. We just got the elite in April so we haven’t ventured in to XBox live and with my husband back in Iraq I’m just wondering if I should wait until he gets back (and it will get used more) to sign up for Live and get it or if it’s awesome and I should get it to enhance the game even more. Thanks!

All my play is via the 360 version, but here’s my take on character classes and party makeup:

Obviously if you’re a shooter-type player you’ll find a home in soldier. I’m assuming you’re asking about the other, more complicated classes.

Personally, I play as an infiltrator and love it. Though I’m limited to medium armor and can’t wield assault rifles and such, I’ve managed to find/buy such a bad-ass sniper rifle, pistol, and armor set that it’s not really a big deal. And being able to train the tech skills myself means that I no longer need to carry a tech-trained individual in my party to deal with locks and terminals – a further combat plus.

That said, Sean hates the sniper rifle – he’s a more charge in and stick a shotgun in the enemy’s face kinda guy – so he plays as a vanguard. That means he has more weapon options (including shotgun and assault rifle) plus some basic biotic powers. He can expound more upon the virtues of the vanguard, but I’ve seen him play and it’s clearly very effective for him.

One important piece of advice: don’t underestimate the power of biotics. I did, and it really held me back for a while. At the low levels, biotics seem slightly less effective than pure shooters, but at higher levels they’re mean as hell in combat. And a party combination of biotics and shooting is unbeatable.

If you’re new to the game, I’d definitely avoid the engineer class. Tech attacks are only marginally effective making this a very difficult class to play. Consider it for hardcore players only.

Though I’d probably advise waiting until your second character to start as an adept, if you’re patient there’s no reason not to go for it at the beginning. It’s a very different way of playing, but Sean and I have watched friends clear levels without firing a shot – purely by careful application of biotics.

Re: party makeup, I’d advise you to always think about the overall balance of the party. You’ll need someone with tech skills as a basic requirement or you’ll miss out on all the loot – and even some of the side missions. Beyond that, I believe your most powerful team consists of a good balance of biotics and shooters.

For example, as an infiltrator, my favorite combo is Wrex and Liara. (Yes, I know. I’ve made cracks about how I left Liara in the ship the whole time on my first and second playthrough. My bad. She’s incredible in a fight.) The enemy just doesn’t have a chance: they pop up, they immediately end up floating around the room (thanks for the lift, Liara!) while getting warped (thanks Liara and Wrex) and shot all to hell (thanks Wrex). If I manage to draw my own weapons fast enough, I can lower their shields with tech attacks and/or clean up the mess.

As a partial biotic, Sean likes to carry a tech/shooter and a full shooter or full biotic with him. As a shooter, I’d probably carry a tech/shooter and biotic.

The good news is that there are dozens of “right” ways to get there, and exploring to find the right one for your style is an important part of the game – just like handling situations via the dialog wheel. Sean and I are both pretty decent players, but we play via entirely different strategies.

Another piece of advice, though: train either charm or intimidate at every opportunity until one is completely maxed out – and I mean all the way to the right of the screen, not just maxed out to whatever boxes currently appear. I won’t spoil you by telling you why, but you’ll totally thank me for it later. Audra, for example, lost a week or more of gameply because she didn’t do this. (Technically she could have continued, but once you see what happens, you’ll understand why she went back.)

Me too Splatterson (sic). Thank you Chuck for an excellent writeup. I will push on as a solider and start changing the mix to have more biotic and tech. Next time around I’ll definitely want more tech ability with some biotic. For now, it is all good.

Yes - thanks Chuck! I’m just going to be a soldier for now. I’m still working out the kinks in aiming with my mouse.

It costs about 5$ for about 45 min-160min game play. I took me, I think, a little over two hours to beat it, but if you are in a hurry you can beat it pretty quickly. I thought it was worth it. you don’t need to subscribe for the gold account to get downloads, you can do it on a silver(free) account, but it will still cost you 5$ either way.

Thing about the game is that you can beat it with any combination in your squad, but only so long as you play to the strengths of your team. The soldier class remains strong throughout, and the adept and engineer classes gain power very slowly, but they can be the most powerful characters in the game if you level them up correctly.

Also here is a glitch for if you want to get the best gear in the game. On the roof top with the power generators, while traveling towards the labs, there is a chest. Open it, and save your game. Reload your save and the chest will have more random items once again. in ten minutes, I gained the best equipment for my entire squad.

I actually recommend starting your first play through as a soldier simply to get the hang of the combat system. Even though I’ve played Bioware games many times in the past, it still took me a while to get the hang of the combat system.

It’s a bad idea to focus too heavily on one style for your party because there are some battles and areas later on in the game that are very hard if you don’t have the right balance in your party.

Like Chuck said, early in the game biotics are underpowered compared to some of the other classes but once you really get into the game biotics are the best party members, especially to augment your soldier. Plus they have the kind of abilities many wished the Jedi could use in the KOTOR games. Liara really is one of the most valuable squad member even if her personality rubs you the wrong way.

I also second Chuck’s advice on Charm/Intimidate. Don’t pass up the chance to increase your skill for this talent. Many of the best dialogue options are not available without it. And I don’t advise playing the middle of the road on the Paragon/Renegade meter all the time either because it is then impossible to max out your charm/intimidate.

Make use of your mods for weapons and armor, especially the weapon mods that help with cooling down your weapons. The armors with biotic/tech resistance are the best especially when facing a bunch of biotics. It’s also smart to make sure your biotic/tech squad members have the best amps available to help with the cooldown time on their talents.

I am going to go compleatly against Chuck on this one. Chose whomever entartains you the most. The game is about characters, and trust me, its much more enjoyable to play with characters who amuse you, then characters who will help in combat. My party on the first playthrough was me(infiltrator), Wrex, and Ash. It was mucho amusing. Then I chose Kaiden and Liara.
If yo do go infiltrator, there are some fun waepon mods. There is one in particular that adds a ton of damage, and increases heat by smoething stupid like 300%. WIth the sniper, its worth it(to me at least) to take the hit, and use that mod b/c the cooldown time wasn’t affected, only how often it happened. It ended up where the final battle was a peice of cake b.c i had the uber rifle.

Thanks guys. Right now my party is Tali and the other human dude. This gives me a sniff of biotics, high tech and good fighting. I went this route primarily because there were some chests I couldn’t open and that just annoyed me.

Biotics are awesome once they get to the upper levels, so I would hold off on using them until you’ve leveled up several times. Throw and Lift can be very helpful.

At first I didn’t see the point of tech abilities either, but they can be very useful when fighting synthetics - which is what you’re doing most of the time. I picked one character and brought her up to master decryption level, then brought her with me all the time. This was after I went on a mission where I could open anything and missed out on all kinds of prizes.

When you get to the endgame, I would be sure to bring only people who know how to use weapons, though. A biotic with no weapon abilities at all might be pretty rough in some of the endgame situations.

Damn, all this talk is making me want to do a second run through. I have craaaaap to do, damn you GWC forum!!!

It’s certainly making me want to play it again and I’ve already beat it eight times. I’m down to only needing five achievements to get them all. The gameplay is fun but I can listen to Jennifer Hale doing the voice work for female Shepard all day.

Ok - am I the only one who thinks that Mass Effect is as addictive as crack? It’s worse than my Sid Meyer’s Pirates game. AAAAHHHHH!

Yep. I try to be good about it, you know, not playing during family waking hours…but still I get that look from my wife which says, “Are you playing that game again?” and I know…yes…I am a Mass Effect junkie.

Hehe spatterson - Tell us about your character! I’m ashamed to say I still haven’t finished the game with my original character yet.

Considering my addiction first to Everquest & then to World of Warcraft, I have not played this game. Perhaps I should not…

Mass Effect is definitely crack. I’ve beat the game 8 times already and I’m on my 9th game right now. I think the only game I’ve played this much is Civ IV and the KOTOR games.

Just being the game-created Shepherd character. I’ve got 20 hours in so far. I got Spectre a while ago and a couple of days ago it gave me an upgrade/level up of some sort. My options were “carefully aiming sniper-type” or “run and gun”. I chose run and gun.

By the way - MONKIES WITH DATA DISKS. You have got to be kidding me!
