Prophet - I did all the day 1 DLC but haven’t done anything since.
As long as they don’t try to turn the games into a movie then I’m fine with it. I love Mass Effect but I don’t want the movie to be about Commander Shepard. There are far too many stories in the universe they could do without stepping on the toes of every single diehard fan since each fan has their own Shepard. They should do the First Contact War, or a movie about the Quarians or even a movie that leads into the first game with Saren and Benezia working with the Reapers. If they leave Shepard’s story alone and do one of the other many stories in the universe I’ll be happy.
It would be better suited for a HBO or Stars TV series.
Don’t complain too much. It could be a Syfy channel movie…
Now that we have to plug into the internet to play, I have wondered whether the game Bioware pulls down and collates information on the gamers choices. Males Shephard or female? This character or that? Paragon or Renegade? So many choices. It would make sense as this type of information would assist the company in game development. Would they pass this info on to movie makers?
I think I agree with Ol Whatshername to some extent. It would be hard for me to watch some renegade male Shephard killing off my favorite character while running through the exact same plot that I have already played. I would sit there saying “noooooooooooooo, that’s not right!!” However, I think they could use Shephard (likely the default male) in a close to but yet not quite story. That might be alright if done well.
If they make it, it will be the main story in the ME series. Most of the choices people make are superficial: be nice or be mean, do a mission or dont. From ME1 to ME2 there is a standard story (council is dead, wrex is dead, your opposite gender human squad member is mad at you, Liara is hunting the shadow broker) for those that dont import, likely the same situation for the transition between ME2 and ME3. Its already designed like a movie as far as the pacing and story are concerned. I think people are more likely to enjoy comparing the canon to their own choices, moreso than complaining about the differences. If it ever does get made, Im definitely in the theater to watch it. With any luck they throw a ton of money and talent at it so that it becomes a quality scifi trilogy and not just a lame video game to movie adaptation.
I’m sure choices are collated via achievements. Whether Bioware passes them on is another matter. I have no clue about that.
If they make the movie about Commander Shepard’s story I wouldn’t pay watch it, because it wouldn’t be my Shepard and my Shepard is the only one I care about. I don’t want to watch a movie about another persons Shepard because it ruins the whole point of the game by making and “canon” Shepard. There are far too many stories in the ME universe to warrant pissing off a bunch of fans (which is what will happen), make the movie about Saren, Garrus or anyone not named Shepard. Most everyone will disagree with the Shepard chosen in one way or another. This isn’t like adapting HALO or any FPS or action game because Shepard isn’t the same character for every person who plays the game, Bioware should know how much fans hate having their choices made irrelevant after all the fuss made over Lucas and Co. giving Revan a canon gender and ending. Why risk pissing off a lot of fans when there are so many other stories in the ME universe to tell? I don’t know how many arguments and upset fans I’ve seen because Lucas gave Revan a canon gender, and that at least made sense from a SW continuity perspective but doing the same to Shepard makes no sense because there isn’t an existing canon that Shepard’s story will have to fit into outside of the Codex entries, the comic and the two (soon to be 3) novels set in the universe. So I hope they do us a favor and make the movie about something else in the ME universe because I’d hate to see Mass Effect fans get disrespected like KOTOR fans were because the only people I know that like Revan being given a canon are those that actually chose the same way as what it now canon.
I disagree. I understand why you feel the way you do, the idea that the story is wholly yours is part of what they push to make the game appealing to jaded fps/rpg players, but it only seems like you’re not on rails. The game decides what you do and where you go and the choices you get to make. None of the ‘choices’ you get to make have had any significant impact in the story told so far.
In any case the chances of them making a movie about Saren or Garrus seem so slim as to be non existant. Theres no way they will dump millions of a dollars into this project and make the lead an alien. If the movie is succesfull it will be because non gamers go watch it as well. LOTR is an awesome movie but if only fans of the book went to see it, it would have been a colossal failure financially.
If having the stock male shep make middle of the road choices (or choices that are expedient for the storytelling) while driving the basic ME plot doesnt appeal to you, prepare to be disappointed.
I love your Shepard, ol_whatsername just as much as I love mine. Movie Shepard will work out fine. Just think of movie Shep as the Shep of Earth 2.
Besides, as long as we get some Asari mind sex and Elcor Hamlet, we’re all gonna go see it.
I’ve already been greatly disappointed that they even sold the rights. We’ll have to agree to disagree because I couldn’t disagree with you more. Making the movie be about a “canon” maleShep with “canon” decisions would greatly piss off a lot of fans who are already pissed off with Bioware because of how many characters from ME were relegated to cameos, that hated the fact that they removed most of the actual RPG elements of ME2 and any of the other reasons fans have been angry since ME2 was released. Believe me, Bioware fans are as hard on them as SW fans are on Lucas, I had to take a break from the ME2 forums over at Bioware Social because fans are complaining so much about many aspects of the game, including getting into flame wars over the bloody LI’s. The hardcore Bioware fans take this kind of stuff seriously which is why the writers of the comic specifically left Shepard’s gender out and didn’t show the body when Liara recovered it. The causal fans might not care and those who have never played the game but are sci-fi fans won’t care but many diehard fans will care. Look at all the complaining that goes on among diehard SW fans about all the changes Lucas has wrought on the SW universe since the Special Editions, or those who wouldn’t watch the reboot of BSG because Starbuck is a woman in it. A lot of people care about those things and when it comes to ME I’m one of them.
They could make a movie about Saren that people would see, they’d just have to adapt Revelations, or they could do the First Contact War or another human SPECTRE fighting a war against the Batarians or a million other things that would expand the ME universe and not step on fans toes. ME, like Dragon Age, is a universe waiting to be expanded and there is really no need to focus on Shepard’s story for a movie because we already know it so well.
Fans will complain, regardless of the choices made. Its lucky for Bioware the people on the boards are nothing more than an annoyingly vocal minority and couldnt break the performance of the movie even if they tried.
I think a movie about the First Contact War could work tho, since its sufficiently action-adventure/scifi and actually involves humans (unlike some of the ridiculous bioware forum suggestions about making the movie about the rachni wars or krogan rebellions). Despite how unlikely it is, some of us still hold out hope that its about Blasto, the first Hanar Spectre, fighting injustice throughout citadel space.
You’re braver than I am for venturing into the forums over at Bioware Social since the story broke, because I certainly can’t make myself go there any more. I thought it was bad over there after ME, or after Revan was given a canon but I don’t think that was anything compared to what’s it been like over there since ME2 came out and the announcement of Dragon Age Origins Awakenings. It’s the same reason I quit hitting the forums over at Starwars.com, the negativity and complaining was sucking all the fun and enjoyment out of the fandom for me.
I think the First Contact War would make an awesome movie as would Revelations or Ascension.
I just realized no matter what they do with the movie, we wont see it for years. Wish they would just wait till it was about to be released.
I, like most of us, have had this conversation across many franchises over the years. Star Wars. Masters of Orion. Matrix, etc.
When you boil off the noise what you are left with is the matter of trust. Do we trust that those that are entrusted to tell the story that we know and love will do it justice?
I prefer to take the tack that they will make the right decisions and trust them. I am less concerned with what choices they make and more interested in how they meet the challenge of telling the story of a franchise that is defined by the viewer’s choice. There is a sort of liberation for the writers when they know that no matter what they choose the hardcore fans will begin squabbling. Ironically those fans take themselves out of the discussion by discrediting their views and focusing on the minutiae.
I think for fun I’ll start a seperate thread about how we would solve the challenge. Don’t want to mix that with the news discussion.
New DLC Overlord is out! Don’t forget your squad disruptor ammo.
Got it. Got it. Haven’t got to play it yet.
I don’t get to play the overlord DLC until I get home from the wedding I’m at next week. Looking forward too it though.
I bet I already know the answer to this, but is there a way of transferring ME 1 saves from the computer to X-Box 360 for use on ME2?
I have ME1 on the computer, but I’d have to upgrade the graphics card and CPU to play ME2 (after having to upgrade the graphics card from the one that came with the computer for ME1). I’m thinking of getting a 360, but it’d be unfortunate if I have to create a brand new Shep for it.
If I can’t (which I’m already pretty sure will be the case), I’ll probably start with a brand new ME2 playthrough, then get ME1 and play through it to transfer into another run through.
