Luke/Leia Incest Perspective

and what about his communication with Leia when he’s hanging at the bottom of Cloud City? that + “there is another” = didn’t know until RoTJ?

meesa no buyin’ dat

Well, to be fair, it sounds like he had a vague idea of someone in another part of the galaxy who could be the person the third trilogy was built around. But after RotJ he decided not to do it, so he had a loose thread to wrap up.

that’s what i been sayin!!! see?? river wasn’t crazy!! she was speakin the truth and just waiting for everyone to catch up!!! lol!!

i would have been so happy walkin outta the theater thinkin just that pike!! just gimme a name george!! there is another skywalker!! shewt neegro…that’s all you got to SAY!!

ben “you were hidden from your father when you were born”
luke “i have a sister? where is she? how will i find her?”
ben “the force will guide her destiny as it has guided yours…bury your feelings deep down luke…they do you credit but could be made to serve the emperor”

thotfull guy ~ the cool thing about this forum is that i don’t feel like you are strangers at all…maybe a little strange J/K!! it’s nice to be around folks that share my love/obsession with sci fi comic books bsg, starwars etc…(although with bsg I GOT NO OPINION i’m just along for the ride…can’t WAIT to find out who the fifth is!!..and i’m sure i’ll have something to say after we find out!! i feel like that little bee girl in that music video trying to get all the “normal” people to dance with her until she finds the field with all the bee people!! talking about star wars makes me happy…i fully expect to meet some of you at the next cali meetup  the mother ship has called me home  hee hee  and plus i sleep with a firefighter now so i feel pretty safe at night!! i mostly let people know that so they know they can be real with me  i got no stones to throw…

well, if i understand this correctly, he reached out to her with his mind “leia…hear me” “we have to go back…chewie just do it” my interpretation was luke said telepathically, “hey i’m hangin from a weather vane at the bottom of the city! help!” ben could talk to luke telepathically…?? for three years we thought that maybe YODA had a brother that was the other!!

Well, that played into wrapping it up that way. Similar to how Uncle Ben’s line about “That’s what worries me” made the “Vader=Luke’s father” believeable.

But there’s no reason to think if Luke reached out to, say, Chewie it would have gone any differently. (Athough it would have been a bit tougher to retcon Chewie into his long-lost twin.)

ROFL!! now that woulda been tight!!

as for uncle owen saying “that’s what scares me” it coulda meant that he didn’t want luke running off to a fight he couldn’t win and ending up dead like his father…scenario one where vader is NOT luke’s father, i could see owen telling luke his dad was a navigator on a spice freighter rather than your dad is a jedi knight who ran off on an idealistic crusade and ended up betrayed and dead…in this scenario, owen also had more than a casual introduction to a step brother ~ he actually knew and cared about luke’s dad…

scenario two would mean exactly what it came to mean…i don’t want you to become darth vader but then again, who knows what ben told owen about baby luke’s dad’s demise…maybe he told owen the same thing…that anakin was killed by a sith lord…???

GL did write himself into a corner per an interview with carrie fisher i saw round about when rotj was coming out…the way she presented it has always stuck with me…it came across as GL was tired of doing star wars…he had tied himself up for ten years and wanted to be done with it and after hearing her say that i felt like GL just kind of said F it…leia is the other…easiest way to end it and prevent the next trilogy surrounding the “other skywalker”…i wish i could find that interview!!!

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I live in a house where everyone thinks I spend way too much time on GWC. (Sad but true, only REAL geek in the house.) Anyway, sometimes I do think I’m spending too much time, wasting time, maybe avoiding doing things that need to be done IYKWIM.

So when I stop by a thread like this it just affirms why I love being here. How many of us can speak so openly about a tough subject with our friends or even family members? If only everyone could communicate without judgement and really just listen.

Thank you to everyone who shared on this thread.

Time on GWC is time well spent

It’s sad because the shot where Yoda says that line is one of the most beautiful in the whole trilogy(ies), IMO. The way the lights from the X-Wing pass over him, letting the screen go bright, then dark, then bright again, as he looks up and says the line…I gets chills.

Thanks, Thot and livia. I’m having a shitty day myself, mainly due to aforementioned crap, so it was good to stop by the Forum today (are we calling it The Forum now, capitalized? ;)) and see that others have borne through this too. I sure didn’t expect this when I first spoke up, but I’m glad I did it now.

So a Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum.

No, not really, but I couldn’t resist.

I would like to see some evidence that the whole Luke and Leia sibling angle was determined only after ESB, because at this point I don’t buy it. I think it is too strongly foreshadowed for that to be the case and also fits too closely with the arc of the story.

I admit that the “There is another” line serves the purpose of suggesting mind that Luke may be expendable and therefore increasing the jeopardy in the viewer’s mind as he confronts Vader. However, ‘the other’ mixed with Luke’s telepathic communication with Leia would be too much of a stretch if there weren’t a special connection between the two. And let’s face it, Luke is not going to end up with the girl in these movies. He is committing the nobel sacrifice and while he is resolving his father issues and personal journey, there is not room in the story for him to see how he lives happily ever after. He is Frodo; his journey is going to leave him with major scars before he can think about finding the love of his life. Han Solo is Sam Gangee; the journey allows him to correct the past failings/mistakes that allows him to find the love in his life. It is the love that that character finds that tells us life all has become right in the world…

I mentioned before that in the SW script, their ages didn’t match. There’s a bunch of other evidence, but you should read The Secret History of Star Wars (free D/L!) for the best treatment of this that I’ve seen yet.

However, ‘the other’ mixed with Luke’s telepathic communication with Leia would be too much of a stretch if there weren’t a special connection between the two.

Well, the special connection at that point was a romantic one. She was the one person he thought of, and not because he secretly suspected she was his sister.

That’s a fantastic analogy. Although Sam wasn’t quite as messed up as Han, but he did end up with the girl, so it fits.

I also don’t see the telepathic communication b/t L&L as romantic either. Proof of their loyalty and bonds of friendship and comradery, yes. But by then we’d already had the “I love you”/“I know” moment, so romance-wise Leia’s heart belonged to Han. Unless GL was planning a sickening Skater/Jater thing. Blech. Anyway, if it wasn’t foreshadowing that she was the other, it was just a throwaway plot device to rescue Luke, an ability that was never used again. So I go with foreshadowing.

Still doesn’t mean GL didn’t pull it out of his sorry-Barb.

I almost thought I would just jump in and not read the other posts. I mean it is such a simple topic. Then I decided that it is only few pages go and read it all over breakfast. I am glad I did. It is great to see such a supportive group.

I saw the movies the old fashioned way 4,5,6,1,2,3. I thought that Luke was star struck with Leia. You know small town boy meets famous singer kind of thing. Leia looking back at it as an adult never seemed to think of Luke in a romantic way just a best bud. Now as a kid I thought who would she end up with?

Here is my question for those of you who saw the movies 1,2,3,4,5,6 did the reveal of the names of the twins mess up the last three movies? Did it turn a simple love story into oh yuck? Did it kill the mystery?

IMO, to enjoy the series you can only watch it in release order the first time. After that, it doesn’t matter. If you watch it in 1-6 order the first time, I feel it’s a huge disappointment.

That being said, I’ve always treated the six films as two seperate trilogies. I would love if it was handled in such a way to enjoy it as a full saga but I don’t feel it was. I was always under the impression that Lucas wrote the whole thing and had the idea of a huge saga written somewhere. That’s simply not true.

Unlike Lucas, I don’t look at it as the Downfall and Redemption of Anakin Skywalker. To me, the first trilogy will always be the Adventures of Luke Skywalker. The second trilogy is the quest for CGI goodness. Kinda showed my hand there, didn’t I?

So do we have any younglings who saw the movies in numeric order?

I’m not that young

To be honest, though, I think that the Luke/Leia Star Wars mythos (Audra’s students notwithstanding) is such a part of our culture that it would be unlikely that anyone seeing the films in order 1-6 would not know who Luke and Leia are.

About it hypothetically ruining the 2nd trilogy… I doubt it. Remember that we know that Luke is Anakin’s son, and considering that the only girl is Leia, it’s pretty obvious, even if they hadn’t named them in Ep 3, that those would have to be the twins. Maybe it’s not so obvious since I saw them 4-6 1-3, but it’s just a thought.

So everyone watched it 4,5,6, then 1,2,3. ?

I’d imagine anyone over the age of 20 probably has watched that way and only those kids with gifted parents (like mine) are taught Star Wars in 4,5,6,1,2,3 order. My boys (ages 15 & 12) have several friends who have only seen the prequels and only think of Star Wars in those terms. Yes I know- shocking, lurid and true!

To the issue of whether or not the baby naming at the end of RotS makes some of the L/L scenes uncomfortable, I don’t think so. There are two men and one woman, of course there will be some sort of power play for the girl. We know when Leia gives Luke his kiss on ESB that it’s purely for show and to upset Han. I do think that having now watched in numerical order for the first time, I did feel more aware of L/L being siblings.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it really isn’t a super important detail for the films. I get the feeling their relationship as siblings is more detailed in the EU, and thus more interesting since they are from the most powerful Jedi bloodline and, as siblings, will have conflicts. They don’t have any conflicts with each other in the films.

Hey, it happened on BSG too. Apparently the line “Kara Thrace is the harbinger of death. She will lead them to their end” in Razor was just thrown in there as a way to tie the movie in with season four. So far the writing team seems to be doing a good job of working themselves out of that corner, but it seems to happen more often than not.

I’d be inclined, therefore, to believe Pike’s story.

Man, Livia, hang in there! Thanks for sharing this with us. I know I’m not alone in hoping you will continue to fight. For what it’s worth, considering this is an online forum on BSG and all, I hope you will feel comfortable enough to share when you’re feeling in the dumps (cause, you know, depression is about being “in the dumps,” right? Actually, until I was diagnosed with “situational depression,” whatever THAT means, a few years ago, I didn’t understand the disease either. Now I get it when people can’t just “snap out of it”) and need to commiserate.
