James Cameron's Avetar

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35187399/ns/entertainment-movies/

The science-fiction sensation “Avatar” and the war-on-terror thriller “The Hurt Locker” lead the Academy Awards with nine nominations each, including best picture and director for former spouses James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow.

Well, this is a tough choice for the Academy. If they choose the Hurt Locker, or any of the others for best picture, it’ll reinforce their image as uptight art-house folk who look down on the mainstream…but if they choose Avatar, there will be a backlash from critics, and an array of cinephiles, the likes of which not seen since Gladiator won best picture.

Either choice will be seen as pandering.

I’ve not seen The Hurt Locker yet (The fact that it’s ANOTHER middle east war movie doesn’t catch my interest). I’ll personally be rooting for Inglorious Basterds.

What was the issue with Gladiator winning? I tend not to pay attention to such things. Except now I guess.

Shaky Cam done badly.

Guys, break out your DVR and record the repeat of this episode. It’s well worth watching and keeping until the Blu-ray comes out.

The Red Letter Media guy–he of the NextGen movie and Star Wars Prequel reviews with pizza rolls–takes on Avatar. Not as scathing as the preceding, but still funny and insightful.

Just watched part 1. While I disagree that Avatar was anti-military and anti-corporation, he did clue me in on the Na’vi eyes. They have anime eyes! And, I’m a little disappointed with myself for not noticing earlier.

Lol. The naive bit in part 2 was great.

I totally had a clue what was in the popcorn bucket. (:

The hell? After all that, he said he didn’t hate it?

Cool review. Disagreed with 60% of it, but I think he was sort of spot on in the end.

I’m the same - I enjoyed the film, but I did notice a lot of the things he mentions, and I didn’t like the attempts at man.ipulation.

Well, I’m late to the party. For various reasons I just saw Avatar today and I have one word:

Stunning.

Sure the plot is familiar, but that is way beside the point. This movie is about submersion. 3-D only adds to that goal of literally transporting you into a new world that surrounds you.

For my showing for the first five minutes my wife and I were worried that the 3-d wasn’t working. The screen was blurry, the image didn’t look right and we were about to simply watch the movie without the glasses when someone somewhere flipped a switch and all of the sudden BLAM, 3-d was on.

This movie is an achievement. A glorious and beautiful achievement. Well done Mr. Cameron, well done.

For the price of the ticket, I’d ask for a coupon or voucher for another movie. d:

well i broke down and went to see it… all in the name of its what my date wanted to see, but i still feel like an uncle tom… for supporting the stuff that will end our society. but onto the movie itself

visually stunning an undeniably a step forward creating a world like its never been made… reminds me of Jurassic park these are the movies that push forward the industry.

the story well its a big disappointment. it was clumsy and obvious. hitting us all over the heads like we were children. now the fact that its pretty much. gorillas in the mist. with cool sexy blue gorillas.

so yes it was good; yes it was effective. yes i can recommend it. for cool sexy blue gorillas; but if it wins best picture well i may just eat my hat.

so yes to the three left who haven’t seen it. give it a shot its good and is a sign of all our doom.

I fear for our future-

OK not really, it is satire. But it could happen…

I’m surprised no one posted this yet. Mark your calendars!

Also, this was in a comment. I dunno how accurate it is:

In an interview Cameron said it will be getting a standard 2D Blu-ray release in 5 or 6 months and then possibly late 2010 will receive a 2nd release, this time in 3D format for the new 3D at home systems. You will need special 3D glasses though and special equipment, so to answer your question, no it will not come with the Real-D glasses you get at the theatre, because those glasses will not work with the new at home 3D system.

I’ll just get the BD format since I don’t have “special equipment.” IYKWIM.

Fox mulling ‘Avatar’ summer re-release
Fox, Cameron in discussions; additional scenes being eyed

Get ready for “Avatar”-plus.

James Cameron and Fox are in discussions about rereleasing “Avatar,” primarily in 3D theaters, in late summer – and, tantalizingly, with additional scenes that had been left on the cutting-room floor in the rush to ready the epic for its Dec. 18 release.

As for how much additional footage Cameron might add to “Avatar,” the guessing began early Thursday when Imax CEO Richard Gelfond said during a Gabelli & Co. investor conference in New York that Cameron had about 40 minutes of additional material that didn’t make the theatrical cut. He also predicted a rerelease, which he said probably would occur in the fall.

The summer rerelease would follow an expected home video premiere in 2D form, which will happen as soon as next month and no later than May. Fox has made no official announcement about a release date for the 2D DVD.

Looks like I’m waiting for summer or fall now before I buy.

If they rerelease in theaters I may actually watch this movie.

Give it a watch at a theater. Whether or not you’re into the plot, or the politics, the movie is just frakking beautiful.

So, who bought it?

Is it ok on Blu-ray?

I’m interested in the DVD version (since I no have Blu-ray). When I saw the commercial clips, I wasn’t impressed. So I figured, let me check out what all the fuss is about. I saw the 3D version in the theatre and was captivated. Then during the Oscars, I saw the clips and was not impressed again. It looked very flat and not alive. I wonder if the only way to enjoy this film is in 3D.

Wait until November when the full version is available.

This release was rushed to coincide with ‘Earth Day’, it has none of the special features that will be in the latter version. And I would not be suprised if the latter version will have more footage too.

It is just like the Lord of the Rings all over again…
