Everyone must get Defender Chronicles!!! It is now my favorite game on the iPhone. If you like Tower Defense games, this is a must have. It combines tower defense and RPG to give you a lot of re-playability. Your hero will gain levels as you go and as you get better there are several difficulty settings you can advance to. You can also buy items to improve your hero’s and what they can do. It also looks really good! It’s $2.99 (On Sale) and totally worth it.
I have to comment here (and not the iTunes thread) that the new iTunes is awesome, specifically with new iTunes functionality. I could hit on a bunch of aspects, but the one that gets me is the ability to organize your apps on iTunes instead of on the iPhone. Brilliance. Doing this on the iPhone is tedious, dragging apps from page to page. Now, much easier. Thank you Mr. Jobs!
Agreed, and you can even move/replace the four SACRED APPS (phone/mail/safari/ipod).
/me dances the Happy Dance
The new update has it’s upsides. But the new Genius for apps is totally BS and doesn’t recommend and apps that interest me.
I should point out that some people who have upgraded to iPhone 3.1 have been experiencing random “freeze ups” that are only solvable by a hard reset (holding the home and sleep keys for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo comes on). This has happened to me about five times since the upgrade, but never before the upgrade.
I did a little search and voila, it would appear that there are a growing number of people with this problem.
Your mileage may vary…
This is why I always allow time for the early adopters (a.k.a. guinea pigs) to discover all the quirks of new OSes before I do. Some friends of mine just had Snow Leopard brick their Mac Mini media server too!
Oink, oink…
Mine’s been doing this too. It’s really annoying when it happens right before you go to bed and you don’t realize it. My alarm didn’t go off last week because the phone was frozen.
Are you guys on the new phone? I’ve got an original, and haven’t had any of these issues.
Also, getting a text message (or anything else that puts up a dialog box) will freeze out the alarm until it’s dismissed.
I have a 3G. When I woke up, it wouldn’t respond to any of the buttons, the screen just stayed black. I flicked the sound on and off a couple of times, and it eventually started working again.
Just as an aside, I have a Mini attached to my bedroom TV. I’m not sure how the update can “brick” a computer since you still have access to the bootloader, and my installation went fine. If by “brick” you mean “broke a Boxee or XBMC install” that doesn’t surprise me. They’re ubersensitive, and not likely to get corrected soon.
Well … “brick” was his word not mine. But I think it was a major operating system error that kept it from booting properly off the hard drive.
You mean it converted his Mini into a Windows Vista machine?
It seems to be limited to 3G owners, Pike. It’s incredibly frustrating, there simply HAVE to be many thousands of people with this problem, and Apple hasn’t commented on it officially at all that I’ve seen. Instead, they released a battery life logger for the 3Gs…
Grrrrr. Arrrrgh.
I think this is an awesome idea for us. Post your homescreens and if you want a little description of why these made the top. (Command Shift 4 for quick screen cap in new version of iTunes iPhone app organizer is a simple way of doing this.
Here is mine:
Let me start by saying I am constantly re-organizing to try and be really efficient in terms of what do I use every day versus specific situation apps or simply reference and games.
Weather Channel is the best all around weather app I have found. Hourly, 10 day, on demand video, radar, the works.
Messages and Calendar: These two are in jeopardy of slipping to another page. When someone texts me it appears as a pop up until I unlock the iPhone, immediate value achieved. Calendar is simply a way of me seeing whose birthday is coming up and I don’t do that as much as I should.
Pictures/Camera: I tried moving these off the front screen but found myself constantly flipping to the second page to use them. They stay on top.
Maps is a funny one too, because I don’t use it all the time but when I need it I need it immediately, thus the top screen.
NY Times app: Best news app out there with one caveat, AP Mobile has push notification which no one else does. Something happens in the world, AP Mobile pings me and pops up a message. Key app to have, but doesn’t need to be on the front page. It is also slow to load.
NetNewsWire: I am waiting for them to update this so it once again syncs with the web version. For now it is a placeholder
Google: It is google.
Settings: I wanted to get this off the front page, but I use it once or twice a day minimum.
AppBoxPro: Yeah, I payed the buck for this thing. Truth be told I don’t really use it, but I always think I will need it so there it stays. For now.
Facebook: It is Facebook
Tweetie: I won’t start the bloodfeud about this, but this is the one I use. (Twitterific pro is on one of the last pages. Every once in a while I give it another try)
Yellowpages and AroundMe: The most powerful two apps on my iPhone. Constant usage.
I tend to leave a blank slot on each page to both catch any new app downloads by not having it get buried 4 screens back and to help inadvertent demotions as you are moving an app from say the fourth screen to the first on the go.
Messages - When I need it, I need it right away. But I hate it.
Calendar - Useful when time traveling, wish it showed the year.
Photos - Mostly so I can admire pictures of myself in lieu of using a mirror.
Camera - To take new pictures of myself and my various exciting projects.
Echofon (aka Twitterfon) - For updating ze Twitters. I declare a holy struggle against Solai for his choice. I use it to update both my home page and Facebook status simultaneously.
Maps - So I can find where in the forest I’ve rematerialized.
Clock - If you think a Calendar is useful for time travel, imagine how good a clock is? Also useful for settings alarms, using the timer, etc.
App Store - Must… check… compulsively… for… updates.
Calculator - The new scientific mode can do some basic temporal waveform functions if you disguise them as load amortization.
Facebook - “Current mood: Egotistic. Come and listen to me brag about my unexceptional life!”
Stanza - Bestest eBook reader. I actually spend more time reading books on the phone than I do browsing the web or making phones. Combined. It’s fan-damn-tastic, and I’ve set up a Calibre server to get books onto it easily, both wife and I use this.
AeroWeather - I get live weather while flying, it’s helped me pick airports and plot out where the bad stuff is.
Notes - No freaking idea why that’s there, I use it maybe once a week, and then mostly to demonstrate how easy it is to type with the onscreen keyboard.
Capsuleer - It’s like EveMon for iPhone, I get live updates and alerts when my training queue needs attention.
Y! Messenger - The Yahoo client was done well, it uses notifications to pop Yahoo messages up like SMS. Recommended.
Clock - To wake me up
Calendar - So I know what I don’t need to do today
Maps - So I don’t get lost
Boxee - Remote control for Boxee
Contact - To remember peoples names
Notes - To remove any need for me to use long term memory ever again
App Store - To buy really col stuff for my iPhone
Banking - So I can always check my finances in a few seconds
iPod - So I have some tunes
Facebook - For when I am REALLY bored
mBox Mail - Hotmail App
Camera - It takes Pics
Last.fm - To listen to Last.fm playlists on the go
Mail - Because one Email address is never enough
TV Forecast - Now TV season is back I need to keep up on what and when my shows air
Settings - To make sure the wifi is correct
Phone - I just keep it here for sentimental reasons. In case I need to remember the good old days when I actually talked to people
Safari - So I have the power of the Interwebs at my fingertips
Tweetdeck - For a constant inflow of random info
Messages - Yet another way to communicate nonverbally
Messages - College Student=Texting
Calendar - I don’t really use
Photos & Camera - They really go together. I use my camera on a regular basis (taking pictures of the homework solutions and posting them to facebook)
Maps - I use this one a lot because I’m bad with directions
Clock - It is my primary alarm
Notes - I use it for groceries, book lists, movie lists, and stuff that I tend to forget.
Battery Status - I don’t use it a lot, but I want it to be conveniently located
Facebook - Facebook
WeatherBug - I’m thinking of switching to Weather Channel after Solai’s endorsement
Echofon - Twitter
Dictionary - You never know when you might need a dictionary
Tasks - It’s actually iProcrastinate. I use it to keep track of my homework assignments
xkcd - hilarious. nuff said
Settings - I have to turn off my wifi every time I go to campus because of the network’s security settings.
Edit: This is why an engineer needs texting
I keep Boxee on another screen, but I use it too. Great program, and excellent app.
