iPhone Geek

I’m still on the OG iPhone, and it’s been worse with previous upgrades. Maybe I should have been hard-resetting it then? The last few iterations have been pretty smooth.

3G S soon! (We’re waiting for the tethering announcement.)

I’m a complete iPhone noob, but for what it’s worth, my new 3G S loads webpages faster than my 2 yr old Dell desktop (hardwired!). Having a ball with it.

I was experimenting with the new feature of locating your iPhone if you lose it/it gets stolen and discovered something surprising: it is not on by default. Settings\Mail, Contacts, Calendars\Me Account\Find my phone

I imagine there will be some sorry person who discovers too late that this feature isn’t enabled by default, and then will get really angry at this fact now that they can’t find it.

I am still trying to confirm whether or not you need this enabled in order to perform the remote wipe. I don’t think you do, but will let you know when I figure this out.

You do.

do do do, dah dah dah

Also, just in case anyone has been off the net for the last six months coughkeir the harrowing tale of the iPhone Recovery Squad.

Still trying to figure out some of the nuances about this whole MobileMe, locate my phone, wipe remotely. Here is a great article that weighs the pros and the cons:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-10270273-2.html

Interesting note: It won’t remotely wipe if you have a passcode enabled…so your data is safe, but you can’t wipe it clean remotely. I wonder if you can access the sim card if you remove it and drop it into another iPhone that doesn’t have a software passcode. My guess is that you could. I would like to further assume if I have password protected my sim card that cannot be accessed, ever. <crosses fingers>

Huh? You mean the passcode on the login screen of the phone? That’s not what I’ve heard at all. I’ll try to find a source.

ETA: Holy crap, that’s a terribly misleading article. Ignore it. Enable the remote find, and push email, and passcode the phone. That guy doesn’t appear to understand how the anything actually works.

Thanks Pike. Looks like it is time for another trip to the Apple Store. I know they say to recover after wiping it is simply plugging it in…but it just makes me all kinds of nervous to experiment with it at this early stage of the game.

Fear not. I’m on my third phone. The recovery process is painless, if insanely slow.

Do tell. What happened? You got your iPhone less than a few months ago. Did they fall down and go boom?

On the way to the meetup in Texas, a bubble formed in the display. On the way back, another one appeared. The Genius (and I seriously could not believe that they actually call themselves that) hypothesized that the changes in air pressure from the plane rides were responsible, although he couldn’t be sure. It wasn’t the first time he’d ever seen that particular issue, but there was no “official” explanation. In any case, I recovered from the backup without problems.

Then, a few days later, the sound started cutting in and out. That turned out to be an issue with the headphone jack. The phone was randomly deciding that there were headphones inserted and turning off the external speakers. Of course, that took three visits to the Den of Douchebaggery to determine definitively so they could replace the phone. Again, the backup went through without a hitch.

So far, this one (knock wood) has been free from physical defects. The dodgy AT&T coverage, OTOH…

grrr. argh.

I smell a guest entry in “Solai goes to the Apple Store”

I don’t know…if this one has a problem you can make a pretty solid case for them to give you a 3Gs :stuck_out_tongue:

Hope this one is perfect for you. Mine has been <knock on wood> issue free thus far. Thank god for the rubber case as it has definitely hit the floor a few times now.

They are, for a time after the upgrade, as Spotlight is busy indexing everything on your phone. It should clear up after a while.

Newest version of AP News has an awesome feature: Push breaking news notifications. Even if your phone is locked, if something important happens in the world you get a pop-up window letting you know what happened.

Auto Stitch is a cool app that will allow you to take several shots with your iPhone and it will Stitch them together into a panoramic shot.

Here is a shot I took at work.

Just have to deal with the image quality of the 3G. :frowning:

I probably should start a new thread, but this one sort of relates so here I go!

I just recently got an iPod Touch, it was on sale at the store at work for just under $230, so I picked it up. I have had fits & starts with it, figuring out how the silly thing relates to iTunes & what not, but over all it’s pretty cool.

Now to the annoyed part. I just bought this thing, plug it into my computer & now Apple wants to sell my a 3.0 OS upgrade for another $9.95. I jsut spent over $200 on the stupid thing & they can’t upgrade the OS for free? I’m pertty sure this will be my last Apple purchase for that reason.

There’s an arcane accounting reason why they do that, but I’m not sure why it applies to new products.

It’s always been this way for the Touch – mainly because the upgrade isn’t really required like it is with the iPhone. Hence iPhone updates are free, Touch updates are $10.
