Too bad we’re not up to the TNG episode ‘Conspiracy’ yet. That had an Invasion of the Body Snatchers vibe.
Where did the body go? I wondered that in the '56 movie. At least this film showed the garbage truck.
These films do a great job walking the fine line between what’s really going on and what could possibly be happening.
For example, this looks like a domestic disbute between Jeffrey and Elizabeth.
What the heck does Leonard Nimoy have on his hand?
Pretty much. Have you ever seen the 1993 version before? It makes that very clear.
Not only that, but the bags are very small and grey dust blows out when the trucks compact them. It’s at least implied that they dry out — or even burn up — their victims.

Ah! 42nd Street before Rudy.
According to IMDb:
During the taxi ride, Donald Sutherland and Brooke Adams’ nervousness is genuine. Don Siegel had lost much of his vision and was driving through the dark streets of San Francisco without his glasses.
That’s San Francisco?!? I thot they were in NY. Oh well.
I’m sorry I missed that. It must have been glorious.
Didn’t you see the Transamerica building at the beginning of the movie?
