I'm Missing The Halo 3 Launch

Sorry, Goose.

Reposting this from the Halo 3 story thread…

<blink>

YOU FINISHED THE GAME IN ONE NIGHT!?!?!?

Seriously. One sitting? Sure it was a long sitting, but it was one sitting none the less. I hope you have those New York taxi style beads on your chairs.

I can’t help but think that being able to play and finish a game in eight hours to be dissapointing. Maybe it is just me. I would love to hear not only your thoughts on the game but also how you feel about it given that you were able to finish it so quickly.

Hey chuck I just added you to my friends list on XBL once I get my game maybe me you and sean can do some co-op or something

Actually, Sean and I finished the game in one 7-1/2 hour sitting – on normal. It’s really not that tough, especially if you’re playing to see the story more than to fully experience the game play. Like I said, we pretty much adopted whatever strategy would get us through the quickest – even, for example, avoiding a battle altogether.

It’s not disappointing in the least! Now that we know the fate of the universe – see the other thread to discuss this – I fully plan on walking through the game slowly on more difficult settings to get the full experience. Bungie’s even helping out with that by allowing campaign play via Live with a variety of scoring systems – even in co-op mode.

And I haven’t even touched multi-player yet in the copy I have. I played the demo for a few minutes with some guys out in San Francisco, but I barely had a chance to oogle the scenery and ride the Mongoose. (Wow, that totally sounds like sexual innuendo, doesn’t it.)

I’m really excited because the level of campaign game play difficulty feels more like Halo than Halo 2, meaning that I’m probably going to get just as addicted to Halo 3 as I was to Halo. (And that was really, really addicted. Really. As in Audra and I played the original game through on co-op at least 200 times, in all modes. Hell, we even started making up our own challenges, like playing through the entire campaign on easy without firing a weapon.)

Sweet. I’m hoping I’ll have some time next week to get back online. (I actually kept my Live account active even though I didn’t have a 360 because I really like my Gamertag. I was a second-round Live beta tester, so I managed to snag a cool one since there were only about 100k people signed up then.) When I loaded my account into the 360, I was surprised to find that some of the people I used to play Halo 2 MP with are still around.

FWIW, I’m really not that great at FPS games. In fact, I was telling Sean this morning that I’m really only good at two things: I’m a first-class wheelman – I can drive the hell out of all the vehicles – and I’m awesome at targeting with the Scorpion’s main gun. I think I’m just going to accept this and learn to snipe so I’m of some use to people in multi-player.

I’m just saying: if we ever do any competitive MP, I suck. You’re going to hate me.

But I’m up for it regardless, and it’d be fun to get a four-person group together to play the co-op campaign, too.

In Marathon’s heyday, there were speedruns of people doing things like that. Never firing your weapon, never getting a powerup, etc.

The more things change…

Pike, was I right in noticing one of the Marathon games available in the Live Arcade section of the 360’s dashboard?

BTW, my Halo Uprising #1 arrived today packed really well in perfect condition. I’ll have time (between playing the game) this weekend to give it a good read. I can’t wait to get the last piece(s) of the story.

I like my gamertag, I have no idea what it means (one of my friends came up with it) and people seem to get offended when they see it but it sounds cool.

SICK FROM NEXIUM

Boy, yeah did that gamertag offend me. I find it extraordinarily insensitive to the whole Setsunaandkurai community.

Knowing that at least some of you are big Halo fans like me, I thought you’d appreciate this picture of the corner of the white board in the office Sean and I work in.

When I peeled the sticker off the one on the bottom, I thought, “What should I do with this?” Then I remembered the last time I had a feeling like that it was at 2:30 a.m. a few years ago – and I knew just what to do with it.

Rock.

Oh yeah, I had forgotten they were doing that. Oddly, it’s Marathon: Durandal, which is the second one. Totally playable on its own (it has its own story arc) but a bit odd that they skipped the first.

Here’s a review from a year(!?) ago:

I really enjoyed the game and I just started playing online yesterday.
I played through Halo 2 once a while back just to see what the hype was all about but I have to say that Halo 3 really lived up to the hype.

I’m a pretty casual gamer so I might be fodder for some of you, but feel free to add me on Live. It would be cool to end up creating a GWC clan.

It doesn’t matter if your casual or not sometimes. Once you know the layout of the maps you should be ok.

So is anyone here that got halo 3 or getting it thinking of buying this?

I want to but need a week or so to before I will allow myself to spend 80+ bucks on it.

But damn it looks sweet.

Quick question: Is it pronounced du-RAN-dal like Dante’s buddy from Clerks – or DUR-an-DAL like the bomb?

And the game looks great for its time. Once I get over my Halo 3 initial addiction, I’m going to see if I can snag these and play through 'em. On one hand, it’s gonna be tough swallowing the dated Doom II look, but I do want to know the story.

I totally agree. And for what it’s worth, while I enjoy playing and play a good bit, I’m not that great either. But I have a great time with it.

I’m so out of date right now that I’m still struggling to understand all the 360-based improvements to Live. Hopefully I’ll get to spend some time online this weekend, and once I get it figured out I’ll set up a clan and a small forum for it here.

Based on my previous Live experience, I’d say the people here are the perfect kind of people to play with – all the competition and fun without the, well, craaaap you get from some of the people playing. Talking smack is fine – even fun – but I’m not interested in racist garbage. Know what I mean?

BTW: You can also edit your profile to include your Gamertag so everyone here can look for you online!

I like the guys who talk smack, gives you a target.

On that note a couple of days ago in a friendly non-ranked match this guy comes on and the first thing he says is “alright guys, im the best so just give up now,”

Guess who came last.

The first. Like Cortana, its named after a historic sword.

Chuck - so did you end up getting the Halo themed 360? I think the controller looks pretty sweet. The wireless headset is pretty sexy as well.

Yep. I made this big plan – Sean helped me – on how to spend as little as possible to get what I need for Halo 3: a Pro system, a play/charge kit, and a wired controller. Then I got into the store and totally caved. The Halo 360 comes with the play/charge kit included, so it’s really only $30 more than the standard box – and it looks incredibly sweet. The gold bits are totally shiny Spartan gold, and there are all kinds of little details on the case, like the IR input on the front being labeled “UNSC AI Input.”

It doesn’t come with the wireless headset, and though they do look cool, I’m not sure I’m going to shell out for one. I picked up a second wireless controller (in black) with a play/charge kit and a black Plantronics headset. The Halo controller comes with a UNSC-green headset that’s pretty much a match for the standard Microsoft unit.

I’m really happy with the 360; it’s a lot more console than I expected it to be. We’ve already had a little fun playing Live arcade games. And as soon as I recover financially from blowing all the money I have of the deck and Halo 3, I’ll be about ready to get poor again for Rock Band.

Audra and I played through all but the last two levels of Halo 3 on normal tonight. She’s having fun seeing the whole story – and I noticed some of our GWC crowd spending some time online with Halo as well. Like Miguel said, we’ll have to set up some group co-op campaign soon.

I’m looking forward to trying the game on Heroic. I tried just a bit solo and it looks like it’s not going to be stupid-hard. Maybe I can even give Legendary a shot. I tried it on Halo 2 and it finally turned me off to the game completely. Somehow I have a feeling it’ll be better this time 'round.

I’m new to xbox live so I’m relying on you guys to set stuff up. I’ve been dying to try the Infection online mode but I can’t find it.

I have to say it will be good to play XBL with a group that are not complete knobs.

I spent some time in the “training/basic” area of the multiplayer maps in H3 and it’s full of w@nkers who have had way too much time on their hands, training themselves up to full proficiency, then lurking around picking off newbies for kicks. Takes the fun out of it.
