How the hell do you pronounce "Dreilide"?

I’ve searched for info, but I’m stumped.

Dree - lee - dee?
Dreal - leed?
Dree - il - le - de?
Dray - lee- de?

WTF? Does anybody know?

Well, lets try and figure out where it comes from and then look at other names from there…

Being as the answer to that question would appear to be “RDM’s rear end”, I suggest we just use swear words.

According to BattlestarWiki, Dreilide’s german for Third-eyelid. Which gives a pronunciation of something like “dry-lid-e”, the -lid- being pronounced like the english lid and the final -e not being silent.

You can improve the signal by eliminating BSG hits. For example, searching for dreilide -thrace -battlestar, which gets some interesting but largely incomprehensible results.

I got articles in other languages. One talked about NASA but I understood very little and could not find the name in the article.

i don’t think so… orc was there in Beowulf

on second thought. orc was evil in old english. Han language has a word, 惡, which would be “ok” in early-han or middle-han languages. Perhaps that is a sign of words of the same origin, even though there are very few of them between the sinic and indo-european languages. However such a fundamental word doesn’t seem likely to be a loaned word either.

Are you referring to “oo gwei” = orc ? (In this case the “er” written above would be prounounced as “oo” as in “ke oo” I guess) :confused: My grasp of Chinese is really crap

Keep in mind that the beijing dialect known as putonghua is only 800 years old, while other Chinese dialects like Cantonese can be traced back 2000 years easy.

I remember Tolkien writing that the Uruk from the Twin Towers was a dialectal prounounciation of orc. You’ll also hear Legolas pronounce something to that effect in the movies in Sindarin (or was it Quenya?)

Here’s a theory: What if the reason why RDM chose such an uncommon name for Kara’s dad is that he’s pulling a Hoffs Drawlar and Dreilide’s name is an anagram for something important. Here are some possibilities courtesy of the Internet anagram server:

A dithered relic
Relic death ride
Earth Ice Riddle
Earth Relic Died
He redid recital

I threw his name into the anagram server too. Dreilide Thrace produced 39210 hits. Limiting it to hits including seven and daniel produced no hits. I’m not seeing anything here, but maybe I just need to stare at the static a little longer.

I am pretty sure that Dreilide is pronounced DANIEL !!!
