Holiday Special Suggestions

Ok, so it seems that I won’t be completely ridiculed for my appreciation of While Harry Met Sally. I shall take this opportunity to reveal the softer side of me: I have a weakness for Christmas-themed romantic comedies. I love them all. (Unless they suck.) Don’t get me wrong, I’m a very, very macho, manly man who loves nothing better than to chase velociraptors with a chainsaw in my free time, and enjoys hunting little bambis with C4. But Christmas just isn’t Christmas unless I get to see When Harry Met Sally. Or While You Were Sleeping. Or Sleepless in Seattle. (Hmm, is there a Bill Pullman theme here?) Or About A Boy. In a pinch, Love, Actually will do. I just can’t get over the whole "Hugh Fking Grant is the prime minister" part. But the Mr. Darcy and the Portuegese chick arc is so sweet, I overlook the fact that Hugh Fking Grant is the prime minister. Speaking of which, I just realize Bridget Jones Diary is also Christmas themed. That’s also an acceptable movie. Or, if you wanna get hard-core sappy, there’s the BBC version of the Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth.

Ok, I fear I’ve revealed too much about myself. I’m gonna shut up now.

No, you’re right. It’s about the vibe, not the content.

Here are OT’s eccentric Christmas movie picks, for your consideration:

“The Thin Man” with William Powell, Myrna Loy and, of course, Asta. Based on the Dahsiell Hammett mystery of the same name and set in San Francisco at Christmas (mostly) the scene with a hung over Nick Charles shooting at ornaments on the tree with his pop gun (a gift from his wife, Nora) is terrific.

“Night of the Hunter” with Robert Mitchum (a “preacher” with “love” and “hate” tatooed on his fingers), Shelly Winters, Lillian Gish and (even) Peter Graves (as a convicted felon). A dark, disturbing film directed by Charles Laughton, the film has one of the great Christmas endings and the famous line by Gish’s character about how the children will always abide (for you Big Lebowski fans).

Both in black and white.

You are a twisted old geezer.

I will not be so kind. You, Tray, should be ashamed. Content is everything, and as such, you should use the holiday season as incentive to set the bar high:

That works for me, Solai!

My Uncle ent to the school with the famous flagpole, actually!

Good for you !! I love Christmas-themed romantic comedies. I’ve seen all the ones you mentioned. Enjoy. (My 2 manly sons have seen Pride & Prejudice several times on their own [not on a date], but wait, maybe it was because of Keira.)

My Uncle ent to the school with the famous flagpole, actually!

Excellent. Which prompts a line of questioning about him that relates to extremely low temperatures and metal.

Whoa, a whole new level of respect, here, Aset, your uncle is an ent??

I seem to remember something about Nightmare Before Christmas in November. and I’ll be up late tonight watching my favorite Thanksgiving movie, Home for the Holidays

No, his tongue is stuck to the flagpole. As in “Ah ent oo uh ool um a isus oreh.” (The poster just kindly translated the rest.)

I believe he told us that he did indeed get histongue stuck on said pole. (Jesus, huge opening for GR there)

Sure! <.< >.>

That works too!

Yeah!!! I LOVE Garfield specials. I’m going to see if I can find a cheap copy of the Christmas special.

You know…I’ve never actually seen that movie [/sheepish] Yet! YET! I’d love to do a Frak Party on it in the next few weeks! I’ve wanted to see it forever.

Do you include Rushmore and the other Wes Anderson flicks? The way he drops Christmassy music in there, they give me a Christmas feelin’.

Garfield Xmas is in ABC Family Tuesday, December 9, 7 pm EST/6 pm Central. It’s part of the channel’s 25 Days of Xmas celebration. Full schedule here:

Old favorites and new. New includes a Miser Brothers Christmas special, with Mr. Heat Miser and Mr. Cold Miser:

I liked the special last year. maybe do something like that this year.

I’m surprised nobody’s suggested Doctor Who. They’ve done a Christmas special for several years now and I’d love to hear what the cast thinks of David Tennant!

I’d like to think Audra would give high marks to him for the hair report.
