Hera: Mitochondrial Eve, Chief: Mitochondrial Canadian

Chief said he was going up North to the Highlands to be by himself. That explains a lot, aye?

Of course he probably spawned Viking DNA first then his DNA went to Canada, Chief Erikson anyone?

I always thought he was going to vancouver island

I got the impression that Tyrol was a proto-Scotsman. Certainly explains how he was able to construct a still from Galactica’s spare parts, aye?

Like what I mentioned last nite in the podcast. You have Tyrol saying about the islands north then we hear the Bag pipes playing. It’s pretty easy where he is going. So we have Chief going to Scotland then 150k plus 300 years we get Chief engineer Montgomery Scott. The cycle continues.

no one is decended from chief… we a re all decended from Hera.

Or both…

All are mitochondria are descended from Hera, well Athena actually. This means we’re all at least partially cylon. However, our genomic DNA which is completely separate from mtDNA and inherited from both mother and father can be a mix of Cylon, Colonial and Earthling…

re: Chief in Scotland. does galen sound at all familiar? galen - gaelic? Or I’m reading too much into it.

I also thought that although I also thought either Scotland or Ireland.

Why not? It’s probably something the writers considered.

somewhat off topic, but could a Baltar/Six spawn be Eve, oe did it say Hera?

Since it’s traced though the mother, wouldn’t any offspring of an “8” (or the 8’s themselves) be the mitochondrial Eve(s)?

That was my thought. So any child of any 8 could be the mitochondrial eve. And she could be from any continent, right? Cause didn’t everyone spread out?

The “Eve” is the most recent female from which all existing mtDNAs trace back to. Hera’s mtDNA will be the same as Athena’s (assuming no mutations), but if she had two daughters from whom everyone else’s mtDNA’s is desenceded then Hera would be the Eve. If Hera had only one daughter, then that daughter would be the Eve.

Assuming all the eights are identical then they could have also been the source of Eve too… But then again most 8’s have shown themselves not to be stable enough to form a healthy relationship…

Short answer, yes.

Longer answer, over a period of time one ancestor’s lineage will dominate. So, it very well could have been an eight or a six or… (well, that’s all the women left, isn’t it?)

But over that long of a span, it’s going to be one. It just happened to be Hera. She’s the frakin’ Highlander. (Yes, you can take that a couple ways.)

But then again most 8’s have shown themselves not to be stable enough to form a healthy relationship…

Very good point. Perhaps Hera is the only child of any 8!

Maybe I’m just a dork, but, after really thinking about this, I just can’t see why Hera would be mitochondrial Eve. I mean, they clearly showed other human forms, obviously existing before Hera. I understand that she (and many other BSG-people) would have infused the genetic pool by their presence, but there still would have been much older female strains that would also have been in the pool - from both the male and female natives.

unless helo and athena meant to hunt all others for the superiority of the hylon race.

It just means that she was the furthest back that everyone on earth could claim as a common (female) ancestor.

The real Mito. Eve was in the same boat. There were plenty of other women around, it’s just that their (female-female) lines eventually ended.

It might be easier to think about it like last names. In a relatively static population, eventually one name is going to dominate. There will periodically be families with no sons, and that last name won’t be passed on. (The opposite is true of MtDNA.) Think of how many “Kims” there are in Korea. (OK, there’s more to it than that, but that’s part of it.)

It also doesn’t mean that she is the only female at that time to be an ancestor of people living 150ky later. mtDNA Eve is a special case becuase it is separate from the rest of the genome and can be tracked through a lineage.

Also interesting from listening to the RDM Podcast its clear that he doesn’t really understand it either because he refers to a mtEve and mtAdam. So the confusion isn’t limited to the fans…
