Because they assumed that Americans were too stupid to know what the Philosopher’s Stone was and worried that people wouldn’t go see a movie that they thot was about Socrates and Descartes. :rolleyes:

In the original text of the book it is called the Philosopher’s stone, but the Scholastic, the American publishers, thought the American public would be confused by this and changed it to the Sorcerer’s stone.
The movie filmed all the scenes that mention the stone twice; once as the Philosophers, once as the Sorcerer’s stone. So much less confusing for us dumb Americans huh?
