GWC Podcast #96

I know Starbuck’s representation on the painting looks very ship-like, but does anyone have a shot of the flash of the planet she had when she was trying to remember where she had been. The planet she’s painting was one of those flashes, and I could have sworn those were three stars flashing and a comet swooping by. Perhaps I’m mistaken…

Lots of painting questions being asked and unanswered at :

Good points, Toaster Hunter. Even though Tory did have a reason (it wasn’t blind rage or something), the fact is that she murdered Cally and did so in a particularly cruel way. She also did it without consulting with the others. Murder is when you kill another person without the sanction of law or a declaration of war. While Tory had good reasons to silence Cally, it was definitely murder.

As to Zarek, though… I think he may have realized how much more powerful he is as a string-puller than he is as the actual leader. I think he’s trying to groom Lee to be a president who he can continue to manipulate from Colonial One. While I don’t think he’s changed his stripes, I do think he learned something from his adventures since being released from jail- namely, get your claws under the leaders’ skins and stand in the shadows so no one can tell.

Welcome L.L.L.! I somehow think you will fit right in with our merry band.

True monotheism recognizes many gods, but will only worship, or give reverence to a single God. In the case of angels, yes they could be classified as gods, and even Satan is classified a god in the bible, but no reverence should be given to angels or to Satan.

In a Polytheism structure, you would give reverence and devotion to many gods, and generally one or two (usually a male/female duo) gods that are higher then the others. Each god given devotion is generally responsible for certain aspects of life, harvests , fertility, the weather, sun, and moon, etc. Usually anything outside the control of the general populace has a god that is prayed to to exercise said control.

Most Christian religions, and Muslims as well , would give reverence to the one God of the bible, whether it be God, Yahweh, Jesus, Jehovah or Allah. Other faiths have mingled in saint worship (Catholicism being the biggest) which would encompass Angels. In my opinion, that would make me classify Catholicism as a polytheistic religion. Although I am sure most Catholics would disagree with that.

Back to the show though. The lords of Kobol have always indicated to me that there are 12 gods that are worshiped, and that each colony has a specific god that they look too, while reverence to the other gods. As far as the “one true god” of the cylons, I am still waiting for Count Iblis to show up and fulfil that role.

Welcome!

I do not think Tyrol has lost his last tie to humanity: Nicky is 1/2 human and 1/2 Cally. I hope that will help him as he moves on. The Chief also is exceptionally close to the deck gang and even higher ups like the Old Man. I think his relationships with people will help him stay connected to his own humanity, despite having lost his wife and getting more in touch with his Cylon self.

I do wonder, however, what he is talking about in the preview for this week’s episode,
when he says, “I’m not going to make an angel out of someone who wasn’t an angel.” That seems like he’s rejecting at least part of his relationship with/love for Cally. I wonder if he knows she tried to kill Nicky?
I was thinking the same thing and wonder if a Count Iblis/Satanic character can originate from the 12 Lords of Kobol, but then have been the ‘programmer’ of the new Cylons. It’s a neat trick of a god to not have to rely on the faith of his disciples but to actually have such belief in him/her be innately programmed. In addition it would make sense that he would program himself to be above the other gods and limit all discussion and enquiry into their existance. Just a thought…

Don’t Galen’s voice sound quite a lot like Grandpa Goo when he talks to Cally, right before she starts waving the wrench around?

Don’t forget, there was a short time where Zarek was in charge, but the only decision that seems to have come from that presidency was of the airlock tribunals he legalized… he’s much better as a behind the scenes guy.

welcome to the boards L.L.L., grab a plastic cup and get a drink from the watercooler, we keep it nice and cool.

Welcome L.L.L.!

Solai! Stop it! You sound like Mal (in my head) when you phrase like that!

Hey everyone! I’m new here. I started listening to GWC a couple of months ago. I started with podcast 32, which I think was the first watch of Maelstrom. After listening to hours and hours of Sean, Chuck, and Audra I’m finally caught up!

Now that I’m caught up I felt I could finally call into the show, which I did yesterday. Hopefully they’ll play it next podcast! I was a little nervous when I called, so I don’t even remember half of what I said.

It’s a great podcast, and this seems to be a great community with lots of cool people. I’m looking forward to becoming more involved in it, although I have to say this forum is overwhelmingly huge!

Exactly why he needs to change his avatar! I can’t get anything done when I’m swooning!

Awww. yer just saying that!

Welcome!

Hey there, Keebler! Welcome to GWC. The first time I called in I was nervous and but when they played me it made my week-- good luck getting on the show!

I don’t know if anyone else brought this up, but if not, I’m surprised no one mentioned that Cally might have suffered from post partum depression.

I was originally thinking the same thing, I don’t have the timeline straight though and am not sure how old Nicky is. Where the hell were her peeps during all of this!!!

I can smell it! There’s another poll somewhere in there.

Ok, I’m finally caught up on the podcast and this thread, so here are my thoughts:

A couple thoughts about Tori:

 1. Yes, Tori “capital m” Murdered Cally. But why is it any different than any other incidence of murder we’ve seen so far? What makes Cally so different from all the people Duck killed or even Jammer or Crashdown or Ellen Tigh? Yeah, I’m sad she died, but I just don’t get the huge sense of tragedy that others here on the forums are expressing.

 2. I also don’t understand why so many people seem to be focusing on the obsession that the female cylons have with babies, but not that Nicky is as important (or possibly even more important since we don’t know the whole nature of the Final Four) as Hera. So, how are Tori’s actions so “capital e” Evil when compared to the cold-blooded actions of Laura Roslin regarding Hera?

And some other random thoughts:

 1. The figure in Starbuck’s painting definitely looks like a “Ship of Lights”. Whether it’s just an homage or foreshadowing remains to be seen. Wouldn’t it be just like RDM to frak with our minds and never completely answer the question of the “New and Improved” Starbuck?

 2. Speaking of Starbuck, I think Sam is well aware of how frakked up she is. I think he knew before she said it that she only married him because it was safe. I think he married her knowing all about it, just like Dee married Lee knowing all about his issues. I just think Sam is more active fighting for his relationship, while Dee is more passive. We see how well that worked

 3. As for the state of relationships, I think one of the reason why so many relationships are falling apart is that there are so many other stresses. When some of these relationships started, it was more peaceful days. There was a sense of urgency about rebuilding the human race. And everyone was geared toward settling down and starting over. The only one of the major relationships that is succeeding is the only one that had to question itself from the get-go. Helo, especially, and Athena had to face public disapproval, and therefore had to decide right away if their relationship was worth fighting for. Maybe I’m being a bit too idealistic. ::shrug::

I probably had more to say, but I forget now, and this is getting pretty long as it is…

I am totally with you there! Thank you for articulating my thoughts for me!

I agree with Apollymy about the murder of Cally, why is everyone making a big deal out of it?

I would seriously question the judgement of anyone who takes more than a split second to decide if it was murder or not, remind me not to have a trial in your court room

I also kind of wondered why Chuck and the gang were wondering why Cally got together with the Chief, I thought it was obvious from the beginning of the series that she had a “thing” for Tyrol
