GWC Podcast #92

The podcasts did not start until the episode where Ellen was introduced. If memory serves, though, RDM did record in a studio a DVD-only commentary track that made it onto the US edition. If I thought I would not cause an avalanche, I would grab my DVDs off the shelf to check. According to Battlestarwiki, it shows up in the Region 1 DVDs.

This is my understanding of the timeline…not that I think we need to debate it. RDM started mid-season as a “Stunt”, found he enjoyed the process and for the DVD went back and did some of the prior episodes.

That explains my lack of knowledge. I don’t have the region 2 dvds, but I’m curious if they have those commentaries.

Have to check myself - cuz I could have sworn Bastille day had a commentary. But my mind on upcoming stuff. In two weeks…defeintely a time for Happy Snoopy Dance!

On the Cally like/dislike…I don’t dislike Cally - but I can kinda understand why some of the ladies don’t. She at times can be whiny, and her position on what justice can be nebulous. But - she is kinda cute (not Sharon cute…but Sharon’s hot…really realllly hot…what was I talking about???)

The ep - as usual really good stuff. Andres just looked…broken. That’s the only way I can describe it. Lee was more along the lines of just abotu to come apart…–so he focussed on anything else, so he wouldn’t. Would have liked ot have seem the talk he and Dee had adfer Starbucks viper blew up.

But Adama…really was not thrilled with his little “You think your loss is greater than mine?” shot at Lee. I would have looked him dead inteh eye and said “yes”. Not dicounting that Bill Adama loss a daughter, but Lee lost his last close friend, the women he really loved…I mean Bill just pissed me off on this one.

Ahh but Lampkin…damn. From the first shot you know the game has changed. He basically eclipses everyone he works with. They have to play to his tune. Anyone who can manipluate Baltar, Six, Roslin and Lee without breaking a sweat may not be a Final Five - but he is Cylon-ish!Frakkiin brilliant!!

I can’t leave the Celebrity Jeopardy thought behind without sharing this:

Burt Reynolds: Yeah well, why don’t you give me, ah… why don’tcha give me Ape Tit for $200.

Alex Trebek: It’s not “Ape Tit.” It’s A Petit …never mind! Let’s just go to “Animal Sounds” for $600. This is the sound a doggy makes. [ Connery buzzes in ] Mr. Connery.

Sean Connery: Moo.

Alex Trebek: No.

Sean Connery: Well, that’s the sound your mother made last night!

Moving on, count me as a Cally fan. Maybe it is Nikki’s inherrent cuteness, but I always liked her. It seemed very realistic to me to have a character who was just going through the military to pay for dentistry school. Bad luck, I guess. If only she would have been born a few years earlier, she would have gotten out of the service and been on Caprica when… the Cylons attacked… uh, maybe that’s GOOD luck!

Oh. The best. Especially the look of total sincerity on Sean Connery’s face as he says, “Moo”

Classic.

Because Audra was humming Little Green Bag by George Baker, I give you:

Working my way through the podcast and I had to stop and make a post. In the discussion of Cally there was an offhanded comment about how Dee is also commendable because she too stands by her man. I have to disagree and suggest that the character is actually quite shallow. First off, she dumps Billy, who loved her and would be a good husband, for Lee. At first this could be seen as her heart taking her in a different place, but I think it is becoming more clear that her greater motivation was to climb socially than it was to be with her true love. It has been argued that she was admirable for staying with Lee while he became fat, board, and depressed orbiting New Caprica and for forgiving him for cheating with Starbuck. However, I think she stayed with him mostly because he was commander of the Pegasus or the CAG of the fleet. To top it off, she finally does decide to leave him when he does the honorable thing by standing by his convictions to give Baltar a fair trial. I suspect she finally leaves him because she perceives that his standing in the fleet will now drop appreciably. In the end I think Lee looks kind of like a chump for going back to her after the whole Starbuck debacle. He probably deserves someone much better.

So, “anyone.”

wow, that’s a good point you’re making. It could certainly be interpreted that way, but we might be doing her wrong there too. I mean, we never get to hear her full side of the whole story, her view on things, her reasoning for her actions, what she thinks her motivations are and it’s too easy to accuse her when she has no way to defend herself. I’ve said it before, though, she never should have dumped Billy. That was a big big mistake.

Anders should walk up to him and say hey, if you really want Starbuck, you can have her, I’m through with her.

If I were a matchmaker on Galactica:

Admiral Adama + Dee
Lee Adama + Roslin
Starbuck + her cylon clone
Chief + Raptor
Tigh + Oracle
Cally + Gaeta
Helo + Sharon (Awwww, they found each other!)

I’m totally with Starbuccaneer on the Cally-hate. I find Cally completely grating. Loyal to her man…after he beat her? I think there is something fundamentally wrong with their relationship. Though if there is one character I dislike more than Cally, its…

Sing, it Phil!

I didn’t intend for this to be a complete Debbie Downer post, so I’ll save it by saying how excited I am for new content! This year has gone by so fast-thanks to Audra, Chuck and Sean and all of my fellow listeners/posters! I loved hearing all the speculation on Season 4.

I also say “Hear Hear” to a Red Dwarf rewatch. I’m slowly accumulating the disks and am into series 4 and have series 5 in waiting. I saw many of the later episodes on PBS way back when, but its been great to see the earlier ones. It would be a good thing to pick some of the faves get people through the long gap between Seasons 4 and 4.5 of BSG…

In re-reading my earlier post on Dee I may have been a little harsh, but it seemed weird how easy she was able to ditch him after all the stuff they went through before…

Regarding Kara’s knowledge of Kara’s mysterious past: Leoben appears to get his info from the female Hybrid. So the question is how does both the Oracle and Hybrid pick up intimate details of Kara’s past? Is it a made up past as Sean suggests? Or is it just the religious aspect of the show that either an addiction to chamalla or riding a basestar for your own sexual pleasure allows details of Starbuck’s life to be plucked from the ether? Maybe its only because she has been through the Maelstrom that allows those details of her life to be displaced into space and therefore picked up by oracles and hybrids. Yes, this does create an Ouroboros-like (Red Dwarf reference), chicken or the egg paradox, but then again maybe it is best not to ask too many questions…

Speaking of cleaning old goo out of the vats. I suspect it is like the deep fryers at restaurants and can be processed in to bio-diesel to run the basestars…

So, what attachments should the new home Centurion have?

[ul]
[li]Spray Nozzle for cleaning cars, driveways, vipers, and goo tubs.
[/li][li]Squeegee for windows.
[/li][li]Iron.
[/li][li]Vacuum.
[/li][li]Cat box scooper.
[/li][/ul]

What else?

It should be able to transform into a heavy raider and Six.

Well it’s gotta keep the machine guns of course

Re: The Doll Call, about the same doll from the oracle’s crib appearing in Starbuck’s now-apparently-implanted memory: OH YEAH! Out of the many good observations from the rewatch – has it REALLY been a year now? – that could be the topper. I forget the caller’s name, but hats off to you, sir.

Re: The Reservoir Dogs/Cylon model discussion, here’s some possible dialogue from that Cylon meeting when they assigned numbers:

“Why do I have to be Number Two?”

“BECAUSE YOU’RE FRAKKIN’ POOPY, ALRIGHT?!”

Re: Romo, a couple further random notes: The guy deserves some kind of theme song. And I don’t want to be redundant, so before I go off on it, has there been some kind of previous discussion of Romo being Badger from Firefly? And regarding the glasses, no real point here, but I once had a manager who had a fake pair of reading glasses that he’d use as props, taking them on/off or moving them around to accentuate expressions of stunned disbelief.

Another great 'cast. Thanks all!

ps. Re: Office Space, what’s up with Sean’s TPS reports?

Well, of course!

I just have to share a few thoughts. As for Cally, until I really started rewatching, I really didn’t like or dislike her. She was just…I dunno…scenery I guess. After rewatching all 3 seasons twice now almost 3 times(I’m impatient I can’t wait a week between!), I was OK with Cally even had a grudging respect for her after the incident with Crashdown. Then the episode where she gets locked in that bay with Chief & they went for the typical nagging wife routine with her. That truly truly pissed me off after watching them again. To me it doesn’t really make any sense & taints my image of her. I guess I’d have to fall on the side of “hating” her, but I wouldn’t go that far really. I’m kinda disappointed that they wrote her into that corner. It was a real let down for me.

As for Dee, I could totally see where that impression would come from. However, there was a scene with her & Starbuck on teh algae planet that was planned but never got filmed. RDM basically said about her that she knew from the beginning Lee was in love with Starbuck. She figured she would take the right now & take the time she had with Lee before he went back to Starbuck. She knew from the beginning it was just a matter of time. Given this context and Starbuck telling her in that cockpit that he won’t cheat on her, Dee would know that it would be up to her to end it as Lee would not.

In the end it is still kind of selfish, but not quite as calculating as it looks at first glance.

Also I would like to add to the whole “Sean” discussion. A posted on another board I visit was complaining that some people pronounce his name as see-anne. I had to laugh at that one haha

Well, he needs to be handy in the kitchen, so all the attachments of a Kitchen Aid, and a detachable palm frond for shade/air circulation.

And in my fantasy, he has vocal capabilities to sound like Solai, Ricardo Montalban, Hugo Weaving a la The Matrix (I don’t know why), and a multitude of other sexy voices that escape me…

and a line out for my ipod so I can listen to GWC whenever I want!
