GWC Podcast #92

This week we dive into the penultimate episode of our massive pre-season four re-watch. Highlights: we lament the many shows that died before their time, debate how long it takes to download Cylon(z), comment on Romo Lampkin’s incredible coolness — and note his cat’s name, Lance — love how quickly Adama and Roslin go from not caring about Lampkin to running scared, analyze Lampkin’s thefts, question Anders’ luck in flipping heads over and over. The Starbuck theories continue, and we take a moment to lament the loss of Arthur C. Clarke — and Chuck’s need (physical NEED) for Dark Horse Star Wars trade paperbacks. If you’re in the San Diego area today, don’t miss our meetup tonight. Check the forum at www.galacticawatercooler.com for details.

YAAAAY! a surprisecast! Now i’ll have fun while fighting crime and saving the world from evil at work tomorrow!

thank you!!

I’m with Sean on Blue Harvest. I FF thru the Perv and Chris portion, also. I think it’s the Dirty Dancing bit more than the Perv and Chris bit. Maybe if they had spoofed Footloose, Flashdance, West Side Story, or Saturday Night Fever. It might have done it for me.

Okay–Cally. Adorable? Really? Until LDYB, she was an alternately whiny/bitchy/crazy, not-particularly-interesting would-be dentist with bad hair. Chief beats the craaap out of her. A soulful look and a jaws-wired-shut confession later, she’s knocked up and–yes–standing by her man. The one-year jump abbreviated their story, but I’m still left with a bad taste that’s partly the impression that their relationship is born of his guilt and her ability to be utterly pathetic and partly a hint of the melodrama of a made-for-TV movie (“Next on Lifetime, television for women, She Married Her Abuser”).

And no, I don’t hate Cally, but I really don’t get the “adorable” thing.

now, which part did you not get???

Cally is so cute, she’s the girl every guy wants to date because she remembers him of all those cute 15-year-olds he just didn’t get to date in high school. At least, that’s my rationalization of why I’m into her so much.

Gosh come on GWC Give me time to at least finish the last one before you throw out another one people have High School to go to you know!

oh, you’re a teacher too?

nope… I’m in it  17 baby! and walkin tall!

Cally is one of the few “Everyman” characters in BSG, that’s why I like her. (Okay, and she’s really cute, too.) I also really like the chemistry that Chief and Cally have had since the miniseries. BTW notice that Chief is just as clueless as most guys when it comes to women. He thinks Cally is just a really good friend or a little sister when in reality she’s had feelings for him from the beginning.

Sadly, that’s not the case. If EVERY girl was as cute as Cally, the world would be a much more beautiful place.

“Suck it Trebek” … perhaps an homage to SNL’s Celebrity Jeopardy…the funniest thing they have done in 15 years? Sean Connery looking at Alex Trebek and simply saying, “Suck it Trebek. Suck it hard. Suck it long.”

“I’ll take anal bum cover for 200.”
“That’s an album cover.”

If you don’t think Cally is adorable after this you have no soul. Fact.

Both you and Galaxy Ranger used images of Nikki Clyne to support your arguments about Cally’s adorability. I, however, was referring to Cally, not Nikki Clyne and, with the exception of disparaging her hairstyle (and come on, it’s bad), made no mention of her appearance.

I was “meh” on the subject of Cally until “Lay Down Your Burdens.” The one-year jump left us on our own to speculate how she went from being Chief’s pulverized victim to his about-to-pop crowd controller. That left me a bit squicked and put me in the “Not a Cally fan” column.

Doc makes a good point that Cally is an “every(wo)man” character, and I can see that, as such, she is a good match for the Chief (at least before we knew he was a Cylon).

Still don’t think she’s “adorable”

She’s not a victim and Chief is not an abuser. He wasn’t aware of what he was doing until after he attacked Cally. Notice that no one seems to really blame him for what happened accept himself and he’s not brought up on assault charges, either. Cally herself held him blameless because she knew he was suffering from some sort of serious issue and she didn’t let that affect her love for the Chief (remember, by her own admission she had harbored feelings for him for a very long time). Also, there is no way that Cally would ever let herself be abused (see “Bastille Day”).
