I guess I have no soul then. True. I like the character, but adorable? Ehhh, not to me anyways.
I wonder how many guys don’t like Cally, as opposed to girls? I mean, she’s really attractive in, can’t help it, a really adorable way. But that could just be a guy sort of reaction. And I like her hair.
Thanks guys for an awesome podcast.
Re: Anders and the coin - I think that’s homage to the play (later made into a movie) “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead”. In it the flipped coin that always lands on heads is like a sign that the two characters are entering this existential type world where their fates are no longer in their control. Which kind of ties into what is going on for Anders in the next few episodes.
Re: Starbuck as the Christ figure. After rewatching Maelstrom I thought the same thing. And her reliving the death of her mother makes me think of The Last Temptation of Christ, where Christ goes and lives his life as he would like in his mind before realizing his duty is to sacrifice himself.
And I think it’s interesting that there is all this talk of Baltar as a Christ figure because he has long hair and has taken to wearing a robe. I think he is a false prophet archetype…
I was thinking about this one–and maybe I’ve been watching too much Lost, but what if the Cylon-ness Chief, Anders, Tori, and Tigh is a big fake out? I’m sure this has been covered before, but all these folks were in Cylon custody on New Caprica, right? Could RDM be pulling a Manchurean Candidate bit on them?
Cool–I like the Last Temptation of Christ comparison for Starbuck’s experience in Maelstrom. The Christ analogy could lend credence to the case for the cybrid idea with Starbuck, too–human/cylon vs. God/man? I’m still holding out hope that Dirk Benedict will turn out to be Starbuck’s father.
On a related note:
The Christ and Eccleston conversation threads in the podcast actually dovetail together quite well. Russell Davies (of the new Dr. Who) and Eccleston did a pilot for a series in the UK that starred Eccleston as the 2nd Coming of Christ–appropriately called “The Second Coming”.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0353104/
on a less related note: I see Starbuck as being more like the Christ in Christopher Moore’s book “Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal”.
I originally wrote this here (Nothing like promoting yourself):
‘What we have with Galactica is an apocalyptic story. The end of the world is nigh. The table has been set. Cataclysmic events followed by the battle of survival between angels and devils. We have the rising of the anti-Christ (Baltar), the harbinger of Death (Kara), The Four Horsemen (the Final Four) so all that’s left to be revealed is the messiah, a redeemer who lives in both worlds (Hera? or it could also be the fifth cylon).’
On the question of why does a forgiving God kick Adam and Eve out of the Garden? The answer is often contradicting, forgiving father turned vengeful forsaker. But there’s another theory: God kicks them out as a consequence for not taking responsibility. When God asks what happened? Adam blames Eve. Eve blames serpent. No one takes the blame. They never apologize or come forward for their fault. Remind you of someone? Baltar has been ducking guilt since day one. Who’s the first one he blames? Six.
I wonder if in Season 4 we’ll see a remorseful Six seeking redemption from Roslyn.
I thought the same thing, Eftiel, but I like the Cylon spin the crew put on it (pardon the pun).
I don’t believe either of them is. My point was that, in the absence of narrative, it’s impossible to know how much of their relationship is based on Chief’s guilt and shame over having attacked her. Not that it necessarily has anything to do with it at all. Maybe it says more about what I apparently choose to infer about both of them.
I like loyal Cally but I’m with the soul-less Cally not adorable bunch. Sure she got a baby-face but isn’t she ugly when she’s angry?
She looks like a rabid chipmunk about to gnaw your face off.
I can hear you going “oarch… MEN!”
I have to say, though, adorability is pretty much a physical thing and there’s no use denying the fact that looks ARE important.
her hairstyle (and come on, it’s bad)
No, it’s not. It’s totally cool. It’s even better than Six’s hair, because Six’s hair gets old. I had never a thing for blondes, but Six’s hair is just so over the top that I would sometimes rather look at bald Tigh than at Six’s hair because I can’t stand it anymore. But Cally’s hair is great and it fits her character so well. Could be a bit lighter, though. Like this:
Come to think of it, I don’t really know why I’m defending Cally. I’m a die-hard Racetrack fanatic. But then again, I’m a GalaxyRanger, I fight for the beaten down
she went from being Chief’s pulverized victim to his about-to-pop crowd controller.
I think you’re reading too much into this. She had the hots for him from the beginning and he just never realized it. And it only speaks for her that she stood by silently watching while he was having his thing with Boomer instead of saying yeah, well, he’s taken, where’s the next one. And then, after Boomer was gone, Chief was available again and we don’t know how they came together, who made the first step, if Chief spilled ice-cream over her feet on their first date or what. And storywise, their dating behavior doesn’t really matter at all. It’s like trying to extract meaning from Hamlet’s and Ophelia’s past relationship when there’s so much intrigue and political scheming to get from “Hamlet.”
Still don’t think she’s “adorable”
Well, you don’t have to. Everybody’s taste is different. And if you feel like crushing on a woman, there’s always Three. (But Racetrack is mine)
Edit: I just saw that almost everbody has a new Avatar, Lucky, Lady D - I think I’m gonna jump on that bandwagon!
Actually, she was actively involved in helping the Chief and Boomer hide their relationship in “Water”.
And then, after Boomer was gone, Chief was available again and we don’t know how they came together, who made the first step, if Chief spilled ice-cream over her feet on their first date or what. And storywise, their dating behavior doesn’t really matter at all.
I think the relationship between Chief and Cally started to change way back in “Valley of Darkness.” Chief is ready to give up after Tarn is killed, but Cally starts a “motivational speech” that ends with her calling him a “motherfrakker.” That scene is significant as it shows Cally has grown past her original timidity since she’s telling off the most senior NCO in the fleet (which is not something that a very junior enlisted crewman would EVER do normally). I think this is when Chief really started to notice Cally. And the embrace the two share at the end of that scene is one of the most tender I’ve ever seen on television.
In the next episode, we see that Chief is ready to kill Crashdown to protect her.
I wonder if Chief and Cally would have gotten together sooner had Cally not murdered Boomer.
you’re right. I had forgotten about that. hm. so was that naive in her part or an early sign of her devotion? maybe she was hoping for a threesome?
Edit: I have to stop thinking dirty thoughts. It’s just that time of the month for me…
Ok, while I can totally see Starbuck folding herself into a bottle to freak out Lee or Helo (especially if it’s a a bottle with alcohol!), I just can’t see her turning down sex because it’s the wrong thing to do. Just sayin’
I was watching some season 1 the other night and I think that Starbuck could have turned out more like Josh if the orphan kid from Boomer’s raider hadn’t been sent out into the fleet- like if he somehow was adopted into the crew as a deckhand or something. They were awesome together- that dopey kid could totally have been her Biff.
Well, I think it has to be retconned as devotion since Cally was originally going to die in “Bastille Day” and Boomer and Chief were going to form a family unit.
Really? Out of curiosity, where is this said? One of the writer’s roundtables podcasts I could never get through?
Joe
WHOA, really, she was originally gonna die!!! Where did you find that?
RDM mentioned it in one of the early commentaries. Cally and Helo both survived their intended demises b/c the writers and/or audience really liked them.
Yeah I remember that about Helo. Apparently people screening the miniseries kept asking what was going to happen to him.
Joe
The podcast commentary for “Bastille Day.”
Wow I had known that about Helo, but Cally oh wow. I’m not going into spoilers here.
There is no RDM podcast for Bastille Day, the podcasts start with Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down
