GWC Podcast #87

Long-time listener Emily reminds us why Helo’s a good guy — and why he has issues — and we check in on this week’s official re-watches: A Day In The Life and Out of Gas. Highlights: we wonder what it’d be like to be the Ford Prefect of Firefly, discuss chess in Red Dwarf, reminisce about Chuck’s introduction to Buffy and X-Files (and re-introduction to Robotech), wax poetic about KSC’s The Boy From Mars (and its strange Universal Soldier connection), hear Sean recant his DC aversion, listen as Audra ranks sci-fi/comic actors by fullness of their lips, add additional ammo to the discussion on green vs. blue aliens, remember the Scholastic Book Fair (and our young selves reading Asimov, Heinlein, L’Engle and others) while recalling last weekend’s trip to the used bookstore, and fawn over our sad, midwestern chance meetings with fame. We also announce a new re-watch movie: Real Genius.

Sounds like a perfect way to round out a lazy sunday evening.

Definite addition to Audra’s list–Robert Beltran of Voyager. I remember thinking the kisses between him and Jeri Ryan would make my tv implode.

Lol, Lady D. Yes, you’re right - Robert Beltran has pretty great lips, as does Jeri Ryan. It’s too bad Chakotay never did it for me as a character. I have to admit, too, that whenever Chuck and I were re-watching Voyager and an episode began with the pan flute music, we groaned, knowing it’d be a “spirit quest” episode. And how about that technological peyote device?

Yeah Seven had great lips…as did B’Elanna once you got past the ridges

But…I’m sorry–the best lips, bar none…Jessica Alba in Dark Angel…SCHA-WING ;D

I’d like to take the opportunity to congratulate Golden Compass for winning “Best Visual Effects” Oscar over the “Transformers” movies. Because onvioiusly the polar bear HAD to have changed into a jet or something…

Hair is harder than metal (in CGI terms.)

Glad to hear you are all getting into Robotech. I have all the DVDs for the first, second, and third robotech wars. The third one is worth watching as is the first, but definitely not the second. You could skip that and not miss much.

Oh, and Farscape is well worth checking out!

What about Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow? Angelina was in it & we all know she has beautiful lips.

Oh hell yeah on the Jessica Alba’s lips comment. I loved that show! High cheese factor.

Ok - I actually had to pause the podcast and then pop out here to post! Farscape was a really good show - the first 3 seasons. The 4th season, man, I just couldn’t get into it. It was WAAAYYY to far out there for me! Heck, once Zhaan was gone, I was done…

Really? I was never a Zhaan fan. She brought too much peace to the show for me. All that self sacrifice and goodness. Now Chi’ana or D’argo, now there are characters I can get into.

props to Chuck for keeping the blog updated. There is some pretty cool posts up

I gotta say that Farscape is pretty much my be-all end-all of Sci-Fi Love Affairs, and it is one of the greatest series of all time (all the way through to the Peacekeeper Wars). Audra and Chuck…just watch the pilot to the show. They crammed more into that 45 minutes than BSG was able to get done in 3 hours of mini-series, and believe me when I say that I love BSG, so that’s saying a lot.

I was actually angry at BSG when it was first announced to be SCI-Fi’s newest mini-series, because financing the movie meant they sh*t-canned some of their original programming, which included the demise of Farscape and Invisible Man (the history on Farscape’s season 4 finale is actually pretty nasty, because Henson’s company wrapped S4 thinking they had another season in the bag, and were told quite suddenly that they were finished, and had to start clearing out their studios. This really screwed Farscape as they didn’t have time to arrange for cold storage of their sets, or to find another network to pick up their 5th season. By dropping this on them, it would have been impossible for them to farm the show off onto another network because the cost of shutting a production down completely and then rebuilding sets at another studio would have been cost-prohibitive, something like financing an entirely new show). As we all know the SCI-Fi network is run by frakkin’ (frellin’) water-heads who can’t seem to realize that when they mess with their bread and butter series and its fans, they really piss off their core viewers, a la screwing BSG out of a fifth season and splitting S4 across two years.

Anyhow, the Farscape fans really went to work and got together with some foreign investors to self-finance the Peacekeeper Wars in an amazing show of fan strength (which was the template for what the Browncoats did to rally the making of Serenity from the failed Firefly, another show that was SCREWED UP THE EXHAUST PORT by monkey-humping studio execs…but I digress…

Long story short…watch Farscape. Dargo said all you need to know about this show…“John. There’s something about me I’ve never told anyone. I…Love…To…Blow Things Up! I’m really good at it!”

Damn Fine Show.

Out.

Fox kinda has a history of screwing shows over. Young Hercules, Dark Angel, Family Guy, Futurama, Firefly, Tru Calling, etc. And they replace these with shows like Temptation Island.

Dude, she was BLUE! Your favorite color!!!

While Chuck was reminiscencing about Asimov and ‘Foundation’, I remembered when I had a similar experience, actually a few similar experiences. Me a slow learner.

Babylon 5 came out the same time Deep Space Nine did. There was a big write-up in TV Guide about the two shows. It seem to pit them against each other which was appropriate since they would share the same time spot on different stations. I was a huge supporter of Star Trek and therefore panned B5. After all with the cheesy CGI effects and wooden acting, it was an easy target. A few years later, I was having an all-out geek argument with a fellow Trek fan. I was appalled that he actually watched the show. He simply said, “Give it a chance.” I did. I ate my words but it was well worth it.

Then a few years later, the same friend was talking about ‘Farscape’. I said, “Let me get this straight. It has Henson muppets in it.” Once again he said, “Give it a chance.” I immediately fell in love with Crichton’s pop culture remarks and sarcastic wit.

I miss those geek discussions. I no longer talk geek chuff with anyone. My only outlet is GWC. Anyboo, I was wondering how would we go about creating a definitive list of must-see, read sci-fi?

Great 'cast as usual!

Madeline L’Engle’s Time series is near and dear to my heart-my favorite is A Swiftly Tilting Planet. I also loved Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain series-did anyone ever read them?

Emily rocks because she likes Doctor Who! I’ve been looking for a good Who podcast that isn’t spoilery-do you have any recommendations?

I’m jealous that Chuck and Audra will be checking out Lost this weekend for the first time-you get to see how the deep the rabbit hole goes!

I will back Audra on Val Kilmer’s lips as being very nice indeed. As far as other great male lips in awesome stuff, which may include, but is not limited to scifi, I have to give a shout-out to Ben Browder, who was on Farscape. Mmm, Crichton…

Great cast everybody.

I Just want to add that the tourniquet in a military uniform idea was borrowed from The Forever War. The battle suits automatically amputated the damaged limb, applied tourniquet like pressure and injected the person with painkillers and sedatives. I wonder if the author’s lawyers are contacting this company.

By the way for my two cents worth after the Firefly re-watch has been completed, I would like to see a Farscape re-watch.

That’s a pretty common idea in sci-fi, actually. I think it was mentioned, but not used, in Starship Troopers. I’ve definitely read it in several books, and I’ve yet to read Forever War.
