GWC Podcast #86

We do get around to discussing this week’s BSG re-watch episode (The Woman King) — via the buttcast, Indiana Jones, Spiderman and X-Men, sticky boobs, the draft (for which we discover that your friends and neighbors really do select you), Thriller weddings, and the fifteen reasons Sean sucks (it was probably Chuck, anyway). We also take a trip down memory lane to Canton, a place any Browncoat remembers fondly.

And for those of you who’ve reached the end of the 'cast:

i am almost caught up on the podcasts now. halfway through the will wheaton one right now! watching firefly/serenity put me behind.

Dammit Ive got behind too…looking forward to them!

I’m about halfway through and I’m digging the discussion about comic books - I can totally sympathize with Chuck, I almost completely missed out on comics as a kid and when I started to experience them last year, it was really like a revelation.

I do have to give Sean crap for bashing DC, though, I’ve become a huge Batman (see my Batman thread) addict (I like other DC stuff, too, Green Lantern/Green Arrow, for instance, Superman - not so much and I can’t really relate to Marvel stuff, Spiderman doesn’t do it for me). So yeah, that wasn’t nice, Sean!

Edit: We totally need comic relief - I’m voting for a “Take Me Out To The Holosuite”-kind of episode!

I’m supposed to be writing a paper today, which is why it was so important for me to watch the woman king and then listen to the podcast.

I never really got into comics, but I did watch a lot of the cartoons in the 90s. I never really liked Superman, and I think it was because he was too good.

Hey guys,

I was listening today to #86.

Chuck, you just aren’t the guy I thought you were…what, no Labyrinth? I saw this movie when I lived in Europe, and I had to ask who this “David Bowie” guy was. Since then I have watched all of his movies, and Labyrinth is definately as good as it gets. (Read: Don’t bother with the others.)
This is a CLASSIC.

I agree it has been too long between original episodes. If it weren’t for this 'cast, I would not even be interested in the next season. I am sure it is some form of blasphemy, but I am sure I would have forgotten about it. I am one of those weirdo-s who doesn’t do TV proper. Just the 'net.

And, finally, funny story…

In college my friends were the computer geeks while I was the English Major. I remember my friend Eric showing me this cool thing on the computer. It didn’t have pictures and it had very boring content. He was explaining to me how the military was using this for information and that we would all be able to look up anything and everything would be available at the touch of the keyboard. He was describing the internet, of course. I looked right at him and said, “It’ll never catch on.”

I am an idiot.

k

Are we skipping Taking a Break?

I loved “The Lottery”, which I read in High School.

Audra didn’t mention a bit of a twist involved in the Lottery. As the story moves forward, the husband of the woman (who Audra mentioned) was selected, and the woman vehemently defends her husband and why he shouldn’t be selected, eventually the townsfolk accepts her arguments, and draws again, which results in her being chosen and then stoned.

We watched a freaky film version of it. There were all these little kids in the movie getting stones to throw…

My note is that Chuck should really watch “Princess Bride”, a really great, fun movie for all ages.

re: Princess Bride

I totally relented. As I mentioned (briefly as it was late) on the 'cast, I definitely don’t feel the same drives to not see certain genres that I did when I was younger. Sean’s going to loan me his disc.

It will make you smile. A gem of a movie.

I to was excited to see the new Indy trailer. It looks like it will meet expectations. I love the first and third Indys but never could stand the second one. I think it has mostly to do with the portrayal of the female lead. Indy works best when teamed up with a tough broad and not a damsel in distress. It’s great to see that Marion Ravenwood will be back (I always thought bringing them back together would be the key rationale for a 4th movie), though a bit of a shame that it doesn’t appear that Sallah (John Rhys-Davies) could be worked in.

The shooting of the swordsman nearly lead to my nine year old self busting a gut I was laughing so hard. I think that moment shaped my view of ironic humor ever since.

Sean, I couldn’t believe you (of all people) couldn’t come up with the name Jennifer Connelly.

Read the book, Chuck–it’s priceless

Agreed. The book and the movie can be enjoyed for different reasons…the Princess Bride was my favorite movie in high school, that and Dead Poets Society. The book is beautifully, cleverly and hysterically written…think Douglas Adams level wit.

Chuck…watch that copy from Sean stat. I hear where you are coming from…I don’t go far down the road of ‘fantasy’, but I have been known to dabble (you know, just casually when I’m with friends).

Actually, that’s what’s funny – I’m totally down with fantasy. I just wasn’t as much when I was younger. Or maybe it’s more of an everyone-told-me-to-watch-it-so-I-didn’t-cause-I-was-a-jackass kinda thing. (Something which I’m happily blessed with far less of as an adult.) It’s hard to say.

Either way, I’m totally gonna check it out.

Chuck, I was your kind of jackass.

That is a perfect description of me in high school and college. If something was popular, regardless of quality. I didn’t like it.

Thankfully I too have gotten over that. It still rears its ugly head from time to time, but I am at least willing to give some things a chance that I wouldn’t before…mostly.

This episode is exactly why I have looked foward to and have made sure to listen to GWC each and every week since the very beginning.

When BSG fades away, I really hope you three will continue your sidetracking and obscure referencing for years to come. I enjoy laughing out loud at work as I listen, even knowing that my co-workers (who already think I’m a geek, which I am) are looking at me funny (funnier than usual).

My only complaint is Sean’s bashing of DC comics. For many comics readers, there is a love/hate relationship with DC and Marvel. You love one company and hate the other. I happen to be a DC guy, but I’ll continue to listen even though DC is not feeling the love from Sean and Chuck!

Yea Chuck! Glad you’re willing to try out Labrynth and Princess Bride. They’re both really fun movies.
And I can’t remember if it was this podcast or last but you were talking about being in a music frat. Are you a Sinfonia guy?

Chuck: I second Solai. Even if for some reason you don’t dig the movie, you’ll love the book Princess Bride. It’s snarky and rambling and brilliant and made me laugh out loud.

re Jaws: I was terrified of this movie as a kid. I never saw it (at least not till a few years ago), but there was a large cardboard display at the grocery store when it came out on video for its 10th anniversary. I would stare at that huge shark mouth gaping at me the whole time my mom checked out the groceries, and it seriously damaged me. I went through a phase where I wouldn’t even get into the bathtub.

Yeah, seriously damaged. Now I’ve shared.
