GWC Podcast #76

Collaborators spurred quite a bit of discussion this week about what to do with those who worked with the Cylons during the occupation, and Shamus provides one of the best “last episode” introductions in GWC history. Highlights: we don’t feel that sorry for Jammer, see Gaeta’s moment of truth in a somewhat different light the second time ’round, shoot the bull about Tron and its lesser-known spin-off Reboot, and note that there’s (thankfully) no towel scene in the latest “Final Cut” release of Blade Runner.

Hey all,

Great cast as usual!! just some reflections after listening to podcast 76!!

1…Are Sean and Chuck mancrushing on Anders?
2…Is Audra crushing on Xena3?
3…Did Stephanie from Canada say Ya’ll?
4…It is now official Anders, Tigh, Chief, and the rest of the murderous six have airlocked more people than Roslin ever did!! So why do we call her Airlock?
5…Lastly, I am wondering how the right Rev. Sean can say that Zoidberg is his favorite character on Futurama. Is it OK to call a future Rev a MEATBAG?

great cast Ya’ll

  1. No, but we imagine that a) he could probably kick some serious ass, and b) he’d be a great guy to tip back a beer or two with.
  1. No, but when Lucy dons that white dress, you could reasonably say I’m crushing on her.

  2. Yep.

  3. Because she’s so much more regal when she does it.

  4. Of course. He is a meatbag, isn’t he?

Thanks for the kind words.

As to the vote on which member of the GWC Three you are like, Audra is too hard on herself. I was not feeling pity when I voted. Then again, I am one of the other academicians lurking here…even if I have not been employed as one for a while.

Eventually I will finish listening to this podcast, though.

Does Larry count as one of the GWC crew? He is one of Sean’s best friends, and he is Chuck’s homeboy, if so he gets my vote!!

I was the guy who called in about ReBoot… Couple random things for everyone:

  1. ReBoot spent it’s first 2 seasons on ABC, but then Disney bought ABC an axed the stuff that wasn’t Disney owned or Licensesd.

  2. in 97, ReBoot showed up on Cartoon Network.

  3. The first two seasons were on VHS, the 3rd season was released on DVD (but they’re a rare/expensive find these days). The 4th season was two TV movies split into four parts each… Like most shows, the first season is a bit of a struggle. It’s also kind of fun to watch as the quality of the CG increases over time.

I’m not really sure how legitimate this place is, but they’re selling the whole series for US $80.00

I dub this “The Entendre Cast!

Amen, brother.

Zoidberg rules!

I checked and found the Nixon quote that Audra referred to. It was after he had left office and in an interview. Here’s the link for anyone that doesn’t believe Audra ABD.

The discussion about ReBoot (which I didn’t watch) prompted me to think about what got me into scifi as a kid - it was Battle of the Planets! Does anyone remember this animated series? Mark, Jason, Keeop, Princess, and Tiny plus 7-zark-7 battling the evil Zoltar! Ah, the memories! I know what I am asking for for Christmas - thanks guys!

Yes! I loved Battle of the Planets!

I think what first got me into scifi, though, was a show I watched with my cousins as a child when we were stationed in Hawaii.

Does anyone remember Kikaida? Or Kamen Rider V3? I can only hear these in my head in a pidgeon/japanese accented dialect.

Here’s a link so you know of which I speak:

I hope this works- I’m rusty on my forum usage.

Oh, and here’s the theme song I still know all the words to:

Awesome show, and I wish I could get the dvd set, but I just can’t afford it! Even my lovely geek-support hubby would wig at that purchase!

me! b!

Does the Japanese “Giant Robot” where the kid controls the robot by talking to his watch count as SciFi? If so I’d like to say that’s another DVD set that worth picking up… I’m not sure if it’s legally available, but I bought a copy on ebay and my son enjoyed it.

Sounds very much like a 19th century way of saying, Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it."

And I don’t mean it in the you’ll have to take it again next semester way either.

Zoidberg (sp?) is an archetype for the downtrodden
Bender is an archetype to the downtroddER

given the choice, id rather be bender… plus i mean, shiny metal ass, who doesnt want one of those?

Hey I’ll take buns of steel any day…shiny or not!

It’s Brian from the Navy and thanks for playing my messages. I know I probably spelled his name very wrong but Hedroom brought me back. I had hoped I had heard the last of him as I have to lie to myself everytime I watch Euerka telling myself it’s not really him. He was a total coke pitch man schill that was about a half step above Spuds Mckenzie on the cred tree. I’d equate him to a 80’s version of the damn Geico Cavemen that somehow got a show. Sorry about the spelling and the rant.

Blast from the past… thanks Audra.

FROST: The wave of dissent, occasionally violent, which followed in the wake of the Cambodian incursion, prompted President Nixon to demand better intelligence about the people who were opposing him. To this end, the Deputy White House Counsel, Tom Huston, arranged a series of meetings with representatives of the CIA, the FBI, and other police and intelligence agencies.

These meetings produced a plan, the Huston Plan, which advocated the systematic use of wiretappings, burglaries, or so-called black bag jobs, mail openings and infiltration against antiwar groups and others. Some of these activities, as Huston emphasized to Nixon, were clearly illegal. Nevertheless, the president approved the plan. Five days later, after opposition from J. Edgar Hoover, the plan was withdrawn, but the president’s approval was later to be listed in the Articles of Impeachment as an alleged abuse of presidential power.

FROST: So what in a sense, you’re saying is that there are certain situations, and the Huston Plan or that part of it was one of them, where the president can decide that it’s in the best interests of the nation or something, and do something illegal.

NIXON: Well, when the president does it that means that it is not illegal.

FROST: By definition.

NIXON: Exactly. Exactly. If the president, for example, approves something because of the national security, or in this case because of a threat to internal peace and order of significant magnitude, then the president’s decision in that instance is one that enables those who carry it out, to carry it out without violating a law. Otherwise they’re in an impossible position.

FROST: So, that in other words, really you were saying in that answer, really, between the burglary and murder, again, there’s no subtle way to say that there was murder of a dissenter in this country because I don’t know any evidence to that effect at all. But, the point is: just the dividing line, is that in fact, the dividing line is the president’s judgment?

NIXON: Yes, and the dividing line and, just so that one does not get the impression, that a president can run amok in this country and get away with it, we have to have in mind that a president has to come up before the electorate. We also have to have in mind, that a president has to get appropriations from the Congress. We have to have in mind, for example, that as far as the CIA’s covert operations are concerned, as far as the FBI’s covert operations are concerned, through the years, they have been disclosed on a very, very limited basis to trusted members of Congress. I don’t know whether it can be done today or not.

In Nixon’s view, it seams that in the interest of national security or because of a threat to internal peace, the president can order CIA and FBI agents to do what ever he wants, up to and maybe including murder, and it is not illegal. The only check he has is the fact that he must report to a “few” trustd members of congress and the electorate. But as long as nobody screws up, the electorate need never find out.
