GWC Podcast #74

In this post-Razor 'cast we take the opportunity to catch up on listener calls, taking dozens (literally) of 'em. Highlights: we take a call from the USS Abraham Lincoln, discuss a couple of old-series episodes that seem eerily similar to current ones, consider the true meaning of the Olmostash, toss out some crazy theories, lament the battle between NBC and fans and suck generated by the ensuing lack of online downloads and DVDs, re-visit the question of Watchtower’s origin, hear Lawyer Bill’s defense case for Jammer, learn that Audra’s never been to Vegas, debate Cain’s morality and leadership qualities, tout buddy-to-GWCers-everywhere Larry, and – most of all – remember how incredibly awesome GWC listeners are.

Aw that’s cool. The cylon—a-team connection, with the rounds fired, that was me! Larry is so proud; we humans grow up so quickly.

Re. the Circle:

Remember that they were an official, if secret, body. They were tasked by the President himself. So, they were giving a trial, albeit without the safeguards we normally expect in such situations.

Speaking of which, will we get a presidential approval poll for President Zarek during “Collaborators?” That’ll be fun!

Here’s part one of the 1980 episode one of the callers referenced. Very interesting. I haven’t seen this since it originally aired. It is totally an “Enemy Mine” episode.

Hey Guys thanks for taking my question about “Boomer.” You all gave great responses.

on the enemies becoming allies was the classic scifi movie is
enime mine wich was based on a WWII movie from the 1960’s
just some food for thought

Yup. It was also used in an episode of UFO.

This has all happened before…and it will happen again…including Adama’s dodgy facial hair!

Hey guys, You mentioned interest in my boardgame during the podcast.
here’s a copy of the "gotten fat or grown a mustache” card along with a boxy card I think you’ll like.

I’m pretty proud of how well this game came out. You can pretty much do anything you see in the show including the unexpected “drama” we like so much. You can find more information about the entire game at the colonial fleet forums.
http://www.colonialfleet.org/quorum/index.php?showtopic=329&st=0 Let me know if you have any questions about it.

on an unrelated note since this is my first post on the forums, thanks for holding the line and keeping up the podcast during all these months. Audra, Chuck and the other guy hare a highlight of my week.

What’s up with the podcast. It’s buffering but it’s not playing and it’s not on itunes.

You are most welcome  Welcome to the forum!

Whew! I just finished the whole thing. It sounds like you guys only saw the first Larry vid. There’s actually a second (see page 8 of Larry’s World.)

Ironically, I’d only seen the second. We actually watched both while queuing up a call, but I don’t think we mentioned it again. Great, great stuff. We’re still laughing.

My big theory is that the reason why we aren’t getting the Season 3 DVD’s for a few months is so that it won’t compete with the release of the Razor DVD today. I figure they only want one new BSG release for the X-mas season. I guess they’ll hold off Season 3 to coinside with promoting the airing of season 4. Just a guess though.

To really appreciate Babylon 5 you should hit the story arc episodes first.

The Lurker’s guide to B5 is a great resource in that regard:
http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/lurker.html

With it’s soap operaic format (is that even a term?), you really can’t just jump into it in contrast to Star Trek. From the first season you should watch:

And The Sky Full Of Stars
Signs and Portents
Babylon Squared
and finally Chrysalis (absolutely awesome!!)

Throughout the series the performances of Peter Jurasik (who played Crom in Tron) and Andreas Katsulas (who played Tomalak in TNG) are phenomenal.

I am totally there with Chuck’s reactions. When I first saw the show I was like, “WTF!?! I ain’t wasting my time. Where’s me Deep Space 9?” But then I had a trusted friend who said, “Give it a chance.” After watching the episode ‘Chrysalis’ I was hooked.

Without giving too much away, there is mythology, battles of gods, political intrigue and manipulation, and the heart-wrenching corruption of one person’s soul (not saying who :p). Overall once you’re onboard, it’s one helluva ride!

Phil, I think you’re on to something…

Phil Do you look like this ?

Yup. He’s got “No Hotlinking” tattoed on his forehead.

I just flew from Oakland to Philadelphia and listened to #74 all in one sitting. Can’t remember the last time I had two + hours to do that. Thanks, Southwest!

As I listened to some callers gush about how great “Razor” was and how new material was inspiring, all I could think of was Eddie Murphy’s Raw. I can’t describe it and give it any justice, but it was basically about how someone who hadn’t had, um, relations, in a long time gets all excited and compares it to a ritz cracker. How we’ve all been denied for so long that we’re giddy with excitement and can’t contain ourselves.

Of course, in the interest of full disclosure, I have not seen “Razor”, so I cannot say which camp I’d fall into (the “is this a Ritz ?” vs. the “that’s some regular old crackers”), but it cracked me up every time. Much to the dismay of the people sitting around me.

Oh, great podcast, by the way.
