GWC Podcast #72

Just saw the wiki. Alright fess up who dunnit!?!

DougCube, please collect your geek token.

Yeah, but, c’mon Sean – better after Zaan died? No frakking way! I loved Zaan! She brought a serene and philosophical air to the proceedings (well, usually, except when she was going through the plant-people equivalent of pon farr) and her interactions with Rygel were a high point of any episode. No one brought that balance to the rest of the general zaniness once Zaan was gone. I never stopped missing her!

I think the only reason Virginia Hey left was that the blue makeup was giving her too many problems. Such a shame!

I actually enjoyed the first eight episodes, too, and though the series started to suffer (never stopped suffering, really) after about half-way through the
two Chrictons arc
, but I agree that overall it was an excellent series. Thanks for urging GWCers to check it out!

You’ve never seen the Godfather? One of the true masterpieces in American film? Perhaps the only film that can give Citizen Kane a run for its money in greatness, influence and importance? And as one of my colleagues in the theater department here puts it, the film with the singlemost impressive cast and most amazing displays of acting ability of any American film of the last 30 some odd years? THAT Godfather?

Tell you what, Chuck: forget Farscape or Babylon 5 over the holiday. You need to get your hands on a copy of The Godfather and sit yourself down and watch it. Seriously. What an awesome, awesome movie!

And while I don’t agree with ATGreat that it’s only “good,” not “great,” I agree that you should skip part III. Part II is largely unnecessary too, although it’s also a terrific movie (I’ve never warmed up to it as much as the original, though).

OK, it’s alright; you haven’t seen The Godfather. I’ve heard about such people. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

But let me ask you this – and the right answer here can salvage your pop-culture cred – if you’re a Scott Caan fan, then you HAVE seen Ready to Rumble, right?

Seriously, I know it’s a wrestling movie, and I know it has David Arquette in it, but Caan’s (Scott Caan’s) performance could be up there with his role in Ocean’s.

ps. “Scotty doesn’t know.”

Eurotrip? That was a unique film.

i just lost a lot of respect for you:eek:

Look, it will be OK. We’ll just hold an intervention with Chuck. We’ll tell him how much we love him and how we are hurting because of this. Then we’ll give him the DVD, tell him to “Do the right thing”, close the door, and wait for the sounds of gunfire to end…

“So let it be written. So let it be done.” --Rameses II (Yul Brynner)

So say we all.

Hey – I was not watching the Godfather before you were born.

Already done. There’s a copy of it here, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. I’ve probably seen 30% of it in pieces, and most of the major references are known to me. So there hasn’t been a rush.

I must say that I enjoy your pod casts but am also somewhat fearful. I remember most of all of the quotes and references even from the oldest science fiction. I may not be named after the princes in Star Wars but I have lived longer than the movies. So keep up the great work on both pod casts. I would love for you to do a cast on War Games. I remember when the kid seemed to have the coolest computer stuff. Oh, have times changed. I watched the original Bionic Woman as well as about everything that is being remade, but can not help you on her sleep number.

I never watched the Godfather. I was under age to see it in the theater when it was out. When it was on TV I could not watch it because I am to much an animal lover. Well if you watched the movie you would know what I am talking about.

Chuck, I stand with you – I’ve never seen “The Godfather” either. Hate to admit it but, man, I couldn’t stand to see you suffering alone out there! Tough crowd!

Chuck, I’ve never seen the whole thing either…just bits and pieces when channel surfing or what pops up in other shows in clips about it. Mob movies just don’t interest me.

yeah, but it’s a movie, it’s not real.

…you don’t think gilligan’s island is real, do you?

I thought it was interesting that Audra feels that the Stache is a sign of a warm, happy, hooray-the-war-is-over growth. I saw it more as a sign that he, like Lee, got a bit soft. Didn’t shave every day… until it became just didn’t shave at all. Shuffled around the halls instead of jogging them. Let people go who he actually needed on board. Finally, stopped even trimming the stache until it turned into that gigantic dead caterpillar thing.

I, for one, will be happy come 3x04 when he finally resumes his relationship with the razor.

Alright since everyone is coming out of the closet here, it’s time for me to throw a skeleton out there.

I haven’t read Dune.

Ah there I said it now I can move on. Thanx GWC!

WHAT?!?!?!?! NOT real??

But I agree withteh majority - seriously, you should see teh Godfather, Chuck. It’s not terrible like you are an outcast -but in the pantheon of movies (to me anyway), it’s kinda like not seeing Star Wars: A new Hope. Definite required movie viewing. Just on character development alone…

But I digress…HAPPY FRAKKIN THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!

Dave

Chuck, I’ve only seen The Godfather once, and it was enough for me. I enjoyed it, and it’s truly got an epic scope, very Shakespearean really. Great acting, beautiful cinematography. But I’m not really into mob movies, and everyone in film school drools over the movie and wants to make their own mob movies, so I got a little worn out with the whole thing. But see it. You’ll be glad you did, if nothing else for the pop culture references you’ll catch now.

Moving on…I worked on this all night while unable to sleep because a mouse almost crawled over me. Hope you all enjoy. I’ll take it a panel at a time.
