GWC Podcast #69

We discuss this week’s action-packed ‘sode, jump on the first half of the season two-point-five cliffhanger, and (as always) take a number of listener calls. Highlights: we discuss the chances of Lil’ Adama landing (by choice?) in the same building with the gen-one Cylon, enjoy seeing the world briefly from a first-Cylon POV, wonder if maybe the gen-one Cylons are indeed smarter than the new ones, talked about Brother Cavil’s introduction and his possible role in BSG’s future, question the foreshadowing of the Chief’s dream (and wonder if Cavil didn’t “plant” it), and bust on Sci-Fi for the April release date decision.

ok—do’t get wrong. I loves mr some Sharon. Easily the most gorgeous woman on the show (IMHO)…BUT

When Racetrack happened upon New Capica…and the co pilot was sayin gto Racetrack “Well. I got the coordinates from you”…where did Racetrack get the coordinates? Who was supplying jump coordinates for the Raptor squadron?

Sharon

Sigh I always fall for the bad girls…

Hey Chuck,

Thanks for not playing that call.

That would have been REALLY embrassing.

We’re here for 'ya, man.

Hi all…love the podcast as usual!!!

I wanted to add a theory since there has been more talk about the centurions making the skin jobs.

If you back to the original BSG series, there were more models then just the centurions. You first had centurions of different color; I can remember the chrome one and the gold ones. You had the Lucifer model (that was aiding Baltar), and the imperious leader model that had the same voice of Count Ibli (Patrick Macnee).

So my theory is that there may be more than just the centurion models in the day of the first Cylon war. There could be a number of other models, maybe 12; that become the 12 human like models we see today.

Anyways just a thought…thanks all.

Also…

I don’t know where I in the show I heard this, but I thought that Doc Cottle was a Major. But I may be wrong, will try to see if I can see his rank in a picture.

Hey everyone… I saw this by accident, but if you look at the case for DVD season 2.5 disc one, you will see one Admiral Adama with blue eyes.

GWC,

Congrats on a great podcast. I truly enjoyed it. Two things to share:

  1. Is it just me, or does Chuck sound like Cartman when he sings, “Take my breath away”?

  2. I totally spotted that you borrowed the Adama cap for the April news. (I confirmed by checking the filename and seeing it was quite familiar). Glad I could be of help.

I thought that the Imperious Leader was from the lizard race that created the Cylons. That was so long ago though…

That was a question that I never felt they answered… When Baltar talked to Count Ibli, Baltar called him on it. Ibli then said he would have to be a thousand yharns old and confused Baltar out of that revelation.

Anyways, my point was that there were many models of Cylons even in the old show and there is no reason to assume that the centurions in the new BSG are the only ones out there. However if anyone knows what Ibli was supposed to be from the old series I would love hear it.

Sean, cut corners on fan-folded computer paper is easy. Just take a folded stack and cut the corners off. Voila. Paper rolls are a bit tougher, though.

As for the old school centurions, we actually see them first in the new series. The very first scene is Boxy’s dad at armistice station reviewing the notes on the Cylon/s/z and the model illustrated is the old Centurion.

Good point on the various models in TOS. That touches on the question of why, in the new series, they built the Centurions. They’re obviously battle droids, but who were they expecting to fight? Were they designed to be used on the each other? What does that say about the political stabillity of the Colonial system of govt?

Also, I’m definately in the camp of “the Centurions built (or upgraded themselves into) the skin jobs.”

You know…I was just thinking about the opening statement of how “Chuck lives on props” and I started imagining an elaborate re-imagining of DaVinci’s The Last Supper with Chuck as Jesus and each plate in front of each disciple being photoshopped by a unique and recongnizable prop from a different science fiction show or movie.

…then I came to my senses and realized it would take me several days to do that. The idea tho was worthy of sharing.

Frakkin awesome as always. Glad ya liked the Cartman intro - shoulda seen the look on my face when I heard it…

I’m just gonna start callin’ folks sheep squeezers now–thanks–appreciate it

David…loved the Cartman intro, thank you!

As for the rank of Cottle. Battlestar Wiki states that he is a major. However, I wanted to find some visual proof of this. I searched through a couple screencap repositories and quickly realized there are not a lot of scenes with him in full military regalia. I was about to give up when I found this from “Measure of Salvation”

I went back and cross-referenced the pips with their list and can say it matches with their pip for major:

Think that should put it to bed.

As for a fairly exhaustive list of all ranks, go here on the wiki. Very well researched and laid out.

New outro music? AWEsome!
(P.S. I also stole from Solai. Thanks, buddy. ;))

I feel as if I have made it in some fundamental way, I’ve been on for 4 days and I’ve already got a mention on the podcast, course Audra didn’t remember the name of the person who suggested FTL’s would arrive before new galactica but I knew who you were talking about and I pumped my fists, and then resumed driving. Thanks for the continued dorky excellence.

I’ll have something good for the theory of everything podcast, but in lieu of that I’ll comment on Cavil. He does seem to be the ringleader of the human cylons; though one might think that if Six or Boomer was used to box D’eanna it wouldn’t go as smoothly and would need more explaining by the ladies. Leoban would tell her something about her destiny, Doral would blow himself up, and Simon would say something scientific but not necessarily pertinent. Only Cavil has the gravitas for the moment and on first glance the decision would be merely for convenient writing purposes (as I believe almost all of RDM’s choices are). But all the cylons came to the decision, so why wouldn’t they all be there to put down their friend. Cavil as Cylon Leader/God? doens’t seem right, I think he’s just middle management.

“I’m not a cylon…oh, well, ok”
“Sorry to mess up your day brother.”

A quick thought on the 'sode…

In the podcast you all were talking about the cylon and adama and how they ended up in the same place.

Has anyone considered that the cylon he runs into on the planet was already there? I assumed that the other cylon was in pieces spread over a mile or two… This one was already there, as part of the ground troops that are on the planet. It has already been established they are interested in the planet, so it makes sense that they would have a ground presence on the planet.

Just my opinion… and we all know what those are worth.

Right I’m commenting on the podcast while about half way through it, so I might be commenting on something that gets picked up later.

First off, I think the previous comments were correct that Cottle is a major. However I don’t think he would be anywhere in line to take command, well maybe if things got really desperate. I’m going to make a comparrison to the US Navy (I’m not an expert in these matters, I just have an interest in millitary history, so there may be some mistakes. I’m going with what I remember). In the US Navy the officers are usually divided into two types Line Officers and Staff officers. The Line officers are the ones who are generally able (or certainly being trained to by working their way up the ranks) to command a ship, fly and command a fighter squandron etc. Then there are the Staff officers. These are the medical personel, the lawyers, chaplins etc. While they can be of the same rank as line officers they wouldn’t take over. For example if the Captain and XO of a ship are incapacitated, let’s say the next highest officer is a Lt. Cmdr however there is a naval lawyer who is a Commander on the ship, the Lt Cmdr would take over regardless of the difference in rank. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong

Now while the regulations of the US Navy don’t apply to the Colonial fleet, I think it’s not unlikely that there are some simillarites. One piece of evidence I’d like to submit is that when Col Tigh was relieved of his duties in Season 3, I believe that Helo took over as XO and not Cottle even though he is of a higher rank. Ealier on in the series Captain Kelly seemed to be the third in command.

It always bothered me in the TNG episode ‘Diaster’ that Troi took over on the bridge when it was cut of. Even though, she was a of a lower rank, it could be argued that Ro should have been in charge. Although personally I’d have rather had Miles O’Brien running the show.

Out of curiosity, did anyone notice if Cottle was wearing wings on his uniform. I don’t recall.

One more thing, there was a discussion on Ace Rimmer and no one uses the quote in my signature???

Regarding Adama and centurion hitting the same spot:

I think it is the same centurion he was fighting during freefall, because right before Adama crashes through the skylights there is a shot of the roof with a big cylon sized hole in it. Apparently, Adama is pretty good at steering his shoot. Now while this earns him good marks on toughness and general badassness, I wouldn’t give him good marks on planning and strategy. Then again he seemed to be operating more on emotion than brains when he flew into the atmosphere after the two Raiders in the first place. He seemed pretty intent on openning up a can of whoopass, and so far he seems to have been pretty lucky in that his emotion hasn’t written a check that his butt can’t cash. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

On another Nico Cortez doing his homework note: As we walks away with the rifle after beating the Cylon senseless he has the exact same posture and body language as Adama did in Home Part II when he was walking through the forrest on Kobol. Nice touch.

I agree with Phil on the Centurion thing. I was under the impression it was a different one.

And on the whole parachute thing, HALO (High Altitude, Low Opening) jumps will do that type of thing. I don’t know how low Adama was when he pulled the chute but that could explain his proximity to the Cylon Base thingy.
