GWC Podcast #69

I listened to the BSG-related parts of this podcast (which takes a lot of fast forwarding nowadays! ;))

I think the sode was as close to ‘jump the shark’ as BSG has come (some would say the Galactica freefall would be…but that was pure brilliance). I don’t think I remember where that centurion even came from…but the way it seemed to fly right to Adama, the ensuing firefight, landing in the same place was not the writing of an adult I don’t think. Like Chuck said too, it was not believable that a pipe killed the centurion when a fall out of the sky didn’t. But wasn’t it cool to hear the whirl sound of a centurion’s eye again?

Speaking of centurions…I never really thought they made the skin jobs. I thought that mankind originally created some form of AI to do its duties. That AI, in the form of a central computer or a network of computers, is what rebelled. It was sort of my assumption that the AI left and created its own military with centurions as its soldiers…then started experimenting with biological components. I don’t know if the centurions were created first by men or by this Cylon AI.

Radio Picon - with the Direct to Archive podcasts we’re hoping to give more of an outlet for non-BSG material and help organize things for folks who want to delve into other sci-fi. But - I still think part of the fun of the GWC podcasts is the pop culture and shared experiences that keep us laughing. I hope you continue to enjoy the podcasts even if we stray a bit sometimes.

I just needed to quickly disagree with this.

First off, I find it more unbelievable that with two guns the cylon was unable to hit adama while shooting at him during the freefall.

A Cylon has no emotional context that would prevent us from having the wherewithall to control a freefall (i.e. fly over and grab adama and control his landing to minimize damage as much as possible). As far as Adama landing where the Cylon did… OK, that might take some work, but with low wind and any level of control Adama could have made that happen.

Whether or not the pipe would have been able to destroy the Cylon, maybe it was a combo of the fall and the beating from Adama…

Did they come close to “jumping the shark”??? Not even… This was some of the best BSG I have seen, and I hope they keep it coming.

The old centurians (1978 show) where far more human then the new ones, and I for one am glad to see the current writers respecting that…

Here’s two (of many) possible reads on the Cylon vs. Adama situation:

  1. Maybe after the Cylon fell in from the stratosphere, it was weakened and damaged. Its parts and aiming systems were all out of wack. So it couldn’t shoot Adama, who was able to finish it off pretty quickly with a pipe.

  2. Larry was never a very good Cylon. He just barely passed the quality control tests, and he never did shoot very well. After enduring a lifetime of teasing by the other Cylons, he finally decided to prove his worth by joining the Cylon military, which was hard-up for recruits, what with the war entering its 40th (?) year. Things weren’t much better in the military, where the taunting from the Cylons on the homeworld was nothing compared to the insults he had to endure from the military killing machines. Finally, he scored a combat assignment. Long story short, when he finally did manage to shoot down a human viper, the thought of the pilot escaping was too much, and he decided to end this cycle of humilation right then and there, no matter what the cost.

LOL!!! That sir, is quality! With this in mind… I think I had a shot at being Larry’s friend. I would not have made fun of him for being a crappy shot. That would have been how we met. “Hey buddy, remember how crappy a shot you were when we first met, man those were good times! Here slice this bread with your sword arm.”

Happy Halloween To All!!

NICE!!! Well played sir!

See, this is why I read the forum, even though it’s hard to keep up with it all. Brilliant!

I read in one of the recently linked interviews with Gary Hudzel that the FX crew is really enjoying getting to do more expressive and communicative things with the Centurions. The new bullet-heads are maximum-creepy but I have to say that I love the larger and more anthropomorphic faces of the classic Centurions from the first war. Larry the Misfit Centurion absolutely expressed more emotion in his 2.5 minute sode than all the bullet-heads of the previous 3 seasons combined.

Was anyone else reminded during the podcast discussion of the possible adventures of Sean and Larry of that (not-so-awesome) TNG episode where Jordi makes friends with a misfit Borg who takes the name of Hugh?

There was also a civilian model that showed up in Living Legend Part 2.

Actually, the more I think about it, the weird part isn’t Babydama landing almost on top of Larry the Samsonite Cylon, but that they met in midair in the first place. Remember that they collided going in opposite directions. They should have started out miles apart. I’d chalk it up to the 'sode format, but theses are apparently outakes from Razor.

Imperious Leader was definitely one of the robots, like Lucifer… in fact they were referred to as IL models in one of the later episodes. The lizard race that built them was extinct by the time that Galactica 78 was supposed to take place…

sorry, forgot to quote Cavatar in that response…

Also, since we’re on the topic of the OS Cylons… anyone think its wierd that this battle is over an ice planet? It doesn’t seem that it could have ANY usefulness to the colonials… unless this is in reference to the Original Series episode “Gun on Ice Planet Zero”… Galactica had to beat the Cylons on a frozen planet kind of like this one…

I netflixed the entire original Galactica series after I got caught up on all 3 seasons of the current version, and while I thought they were cheezy as hell, I do appreciate all the references to it that seem to be popping up now…I have some more thoughts on why this might be, but I’ll save that for the “Big Questions” thread/podcast…

Love the 'cast, keep it up

So say we all.
