GWC Podcast #68

This week’s rewatch episode, Downloaded, marks a turning point for the series in many ways. Add to that a killer Razor Flashback and a season four trailer and we’ve got a lot to talk about. Highlights: we wrangle ’round about young Adama’s blue contacts, notice his suspiciously clean Viper, marvel at how real the old-style raiders seem, wonder who Roslin’s shooting at in the trailer, debate the true Cylon-ness of the “final four,” wonder who the last Cylon might be, talk at length about the Cylon “war heroes” and how their movement (no matter how possibly well-intended) ends up bad for the Colonials, miss the incredible Head Baltar, and ask big, big questions.

Impeccable timing guys, given I drove in to work listening to Direct to archive no. 2!

There really are times when the time difference between the US and OZ works in my favour.

Audra,
every EJO photo I can find on the web shows him with brown eyes…I think he’s got contacts for BSG

Hey all

What season 4 trailer are you referring to? Can someone send me a link please?

Enjoy!

As always, great podcast.

I got frustrated with the conversation regarding Husker’s eye color as I simply couldn’t believe that they would make a decision like having an actor playing a young version of an established character wear fluorescent blue contact lenses. So, to prove you all wrong I searched through BSG screencaps and discovered the following:

Edward James Olmos’ eyes are impossible to see in the show

That’s right. The man is a vampire. He lives in the dark. On top of that he wears glasses 95% of the time, so when there is actually light on his face the glasses are reflecting the light creating a distortion. His eyes are also very deep set, not helping the investigation. I looked through every episode where he might be brightly lit (A Day in the Life, Home, Unfinished Business, etc) and all of the pictures looked something like this:

<flail>

So I got clever. I went and checked press pictures. I found this:

which at least establishes that the actor has brown eyes. Being anal I wanted to rule out that the character Adama didn’t have blue eyes…so back to the screen caps. After about twenty minutes I finally found this one:

Which I think finally confirms it: Adama has brown frakking eyes. This leads me to the simple question of WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING PUTTING BLUE CONTACTS IN LIL’ ADAMA?!?!?!?!?

…sorry. I just can’t believe they could do something so colossally stupid. Did they not think to check? Pick up the phone…you have his number Ron! Did you think we were going to miss those subtle zoom shots of his face?

Seriously. C’mon.

LIL’ ADAMA - is that what we’re gonna call him? ROFL.

Actually from what I have heard from Jamie and EJO and Ron Moore - EJO wears blue contacts for the show and Jamie hair is dyed a darker color.

I don’t think we have never gotten a close up of Papa Adama’s eyes to really see even in the pic you posted his eyes look lighter then his natural eye color, IMO.

I’ll see if I can find any more evidence either when I get home (or this weekend, depending on when I have time)

I agree. Those blue eyes just seemed wrong. I remember being very distracted by them on my first viewing. They were certainly meant to be seen.

Yes, I was at a live event last summer and they both mentioned this.

But I can see the confusion, I mean there’s blue and there’s BLUE. Lil Adama has BLUE, Admiral Adama could have blue but not so you’d notice.

Hmm…I seem to remember a commentary track on a season 1 DVD (miniseries?) or some other promotional/informational BSG material in which Jamie Bamber talks about meeting Edward James Olmos for the first time and his asking him “well, which one of us is going to dye his hair and which one’s going to go with the contacts?” Bamber ended up dying his hair (isn’t he closer to a blonde?) and Olmos went with the contacts (and I’d swear his eyes are blue on the show).

But…I can’t remember where I heard this (“The Series Lowdown” maybe?). So I could be totally hallucinating.

I was listening to the podcast discussion around ‘where did the dead baby come from’ - and I have a theory. Perhaps the woman who became the care-taker of the hybrid-baby lost her child. This would be a perfect cover - as no one would question her suddenly showing up with a new-born in her arms.

I am not suggesting that anyone killed her baby, but perhaps the Doctor knew of this perfect candidate.

When Sean mentioned the Tigh-Borg, I had this picture to Tigh, alone in his room, taking off his eye patch in front of a mirror, and to his horror noticing his removed eye is regenerating.

So he pokes it out…

Yuck

Yes, I’m sick… .)

For a child to have blue eyes without tons of genetic engineering in the womb both parents have to have blue eyes. If memory serves it was said that blue contacts would make more of a difference on-film than otherwise. To have Mr. Bamber and Mr. Olmos resemble each other compromises did have to happen so that a parent-child link could be plausible.

Thank God David Bowie wasn’t cast as Bill Adama…

He has one blue eye and one brown…we’d all go mad

<head explodes>

Actually, as brown eyes are a dominant trait it is possible for children of brown eyed parents to have blue eyes, as long as both parents have a blue a allele that is passed along to the child. That is why I thought it was interesting that EJO chooses to wear contact lenses. It isn’t biologically necessary for the Elder Adama to have blue eyes. When this discussion came up before, I had thought about EJO’s comments about being one of the first Hispanics in space, and therefore I thought it was some what odd to ‘Anglo-size’ his character to some degree. However, ‘Hispanic’ is purely a cultural affiliation and not biological, so eye color is not particularly relevant as Hispanic individuals can have any eye color. And I agree with Chuck that I interpret EJO’s statements as referring to a himself as an actor given the opportunity to play a role not previously offered to Hispanic actors. I guess it all just shows EJO’s dedication to the role.

If I remember correctly the first time I noticed his eye color was from the DVD cover art in which the blue seems to be particularly emphasized. Also, in checking on the web to make sure I had my genetics correct I read that blue eyes tend to get darker with age. Maybe that explain why the Elder Adama had such brilliant blue eyes in his youth.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I don’t think it was necessary for them to mess with EJO’s eye color for me to believe the characters are father and son. I mean, I bought Denzel Washington as Keanu Reeves’ half brother in “Much Ado About Nothing.” I think it’s more about the acting. I don’t think audiences are that sensitive to something as small as eye color.

(And you’re right about the genetics. I have blue eyes, while my dad had blue eyes and my mom has green eyes.)
