GWC Podcast #64

I admit 5’9" isn’t SHORT short, but it is compared to all those big guys like Anders and Helo. I’m short too, but I still like 'em tall. Not fair, I know.

Thought experiment: Do you suppose the strong gender equality in the BSG 'verse extends to prostitution? That is, would there be as many women visiting male prostitutes as men visiting female prostitutes? Or is this a case where biology trumps culture?

If we are talking about military members specifically, I would say possibly, or maybe Starbuck just stands out too much in my mind. I would be hesitant to apply this to the entire fleet as we really do not see that much that goes on outside of Galactica. I would suspect that civies follow a more “traditional” path in regards to prostitution.

Just finished listening to the podcast, and wanted to point out that Fisk officially took over the Pegasus when Cain was killed since his position as XO. Not sure, but I believe if you go back to his funeral speech, he says something about he’ll pick up her command, etc.

Loved the Podcast! The toy part was funny! Audra hide your My little Ponies from those two.

Why am I suddenly picturing a new thread by Sean, “Ways to Destroy Audra’s My Little Pony” ? Must be my hunter/gatherer dawn of man brain taking over.

Ah, Sting’s oiled body rears it’s spiky head again. The mentions of Dune in the latest podcast echo some similar sentiments aired in the wonderfully idiosyncratic Starshipsofa podcast (search for it on iTunes or Google it). The David Lynch film does seem to represent a barrier to people getting into the books (which, I confess, I’ve read three time - ouch. Children of Dune is by far the best). But forget about the sonic weapons (not in the book) and heart plugs (what the frak was that all about?). There is an alternative cinematic route into the Dune universe, via the “Dune” and “Children of Dune” miniseries that aired on Sci-Fi some years back. These are much more true to the books. The first mini series (Dune) was still pretty ropey, with some dire effects, but the injection of a bit more cash resulted in the second minseries (“Children”) being pretty frakking awesome, if I may borrow a Chuckism. Available on DVD from Amazon, it’s worth checking out. If you’ve seen the David Lynch film or read the books I’d recommend jumping straight into Children of Dune - it pretty much picks up the story where the book, the Dune miniseries, and Lynch’s film left off.

I think Dune/Children of Dune podcast would be a good way of filling the void after Season 4 (although I’m sure it will take a while - maybe forever - to exhaust the potential for podcasting on BSG).

Nice new shiny site by the way. Must get myself an icon…

Chuck watch out. Dune, leads to the sequels. I think there are some 5 Herbert novels, then his son took over after his death and did 3 prequels, House Harkonnen, House Atredies and House Corrino, then they did 2 novels, Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune that bring the Dune cycle to an end, based on notes Herbert left after his death. They are IMHO very credible and enjoyable efforts. So having first read Dune in the 70’s I finished the last in 2007. Best hop to it boyo:)

You’re not kidding about that. I think children of Dune is my favorite but I did enjoy House Harkonnen. I haven’t read the others yet but maybe if we do a re-read I can do it with everybody.

I have both mini-series on DVD and wind up putting playing them in the background on Sunday alot as white noise. Great series. I forgive the effects in the first one just because there are no “sonics” and Sean Young isn’t in it.

I’m up for a Dune read if you are, Chuck. While we’re all confessing, I pooped out about a third of the way into it several years ago.

Aaaand, when I first read LOTR in junior high, I didn’t get it. I’d learned to read before kindergarten, so I should have been smart enough to handle it, but I was just stymied. Plus, there was a Narnia v. LOTR rivalry amongst the kids I grew up with, akin to Star Trek v. Star Wars, and I’d been a Narnia geek since the first grade.

Many years later, when the movies came out (which I neither really loved nor completely hated), I waited till they were all done, bought me a hardcover 3-in-1 volume, and finally re-read LOTR over Christmastime. LOVED it. I bought the Silmarrillion (sp?) and a biography about the friendship between Lewis and Tolkein.

Never did finish Dune, though.

Finished the podcast and it was great – love the idea of the forum so I signed up and this is my first post – really enjoying the “rewatch”. Keep it going !! You guys are great.

Loved the podcast. all the talk about the starwars toys brought back alot of memories from my childhood.
I wasn’t rich, but my Mom and Dad did get me the Falcon as a birthday present when I was 10 years old.
My cousin had one too and we would work out these really involved storylines for our heroes, but it would usually end with a giant pile of good guys and bad guys flying around the galaxy in the Falcon and crash landing on a planet that looked alot like our basement.
What we would do, and all you collectors might want to stop reading here, because it actually hurts me to say it knowing how much that stuff is worth now, but we would load up all the figures into the falcon and THROW it against the wall or at the couch and which ever figures fell out of the Falcon on landing…well, they were dead.
We would then finish the “story” with the figures that had remained inside the ship. I also would use a red marker to make “blood” and “wounds” on my figures…lol.
Make no mistake, Little boys can be very barbaric.
Anyway, love the podcast and hope like hell that you all keep going after the show wraps.
Have you given any thought to maybe having a BIG meet-up for the series finale? You know, everybody meet and watch it together and then spend all night talking about it?
Just a thought…
Later.

5’9" ? I am 5’8" and I was taller than him. . .but then, I have never met a man who admitted to being below 5’10".
He was very sweet. I told him how surprised I was at how little he was, and he just laughed and told me he heard that all the time.
I know most actors are short, but I think this was the first time it was in front of me.

Love the podcast.

I just wanted to say that I totally got and chuckled at the Harriet Beecher Stowe reference. I felt so smart. =D

I had voted for Anders in the “hottest” poll but I had to think that I’d prefer it if he weren’t so tall. guys who are around 5’7"-5’9" are cuter (to me). :stuck_out_tongue:

when I think of the name Felix I think first that it means ‘happy’ in Latin, and then I think of Felix Mendelssohn. I think that says something about the sort of nerd I am.

By the way, I didn’t get to finish the podcast till yesterday afternoon, before all hell broke loose (and, of course, I’ll likely not hear no. 65 for a while now). I did not even remember making the call you guys used of mine. How weird is that? Anyway, Chuck, I agree with you about franchises using prequels and not moving stories forward. That’s totally lame. I also agree that a lot of the appeal of the SW prequels is in the HOW and not the WHAT of the story. I merely meant the lack of dramatic tension inherent in prequels as an example of one of the problems in writing them.

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot (I follow the fanfilms, so it’s not all that weird.)

The trick with prequels, is you HAVE to respect continuity (Enterprise got too clever by half, with their temporal war craaap.) If you have a glimmer of talent, you can write a story that respects that (which Enterprise actually did do for about half a season.) It’s really not hard at all to imagine a different problem that resolves, but leaves open the possibility of the later conflict.

Short version: Hollywood writers are just lazy (and egotistical to boot.)

is it really that good? ive been meaning to netflix the “newer” dune series

How did no one pick up on this? Genius, Atersolitas! Both true and hilarious. If Lee // Hamlet, that doesn’t bode well for the survival of the fleet, but as Lee reminded us in “Scar,” “Bright shiny futures are overrated.”

Hi, everyone. My first post here. I’ve been listening to the podcast for a long time and loving it, but this is the first time I’ve bothered to post anything. This was just too good to pass up. You made a comment about how it would be the best thing ever if James Earl Jones, as Darth Vader, were to say Will Smith’s line from Men in Black (you know, the “You know what the difference between you and me is? I make this look good.”), so I made this Motivator poster and put it up on my blog. Check it out!

You can click on the image to see it blown up. Let me know what you think! I love you guys – keep the witty banter, rambling thoughts, and insightful commentary going!

Edit: You should use this link instead, since I realized once I post more on my blog the other link will be confusing. Thanks Pike!

Love it! (but that’s apparently too short to post by itself.)

Hey guys, great podcast as usual. I just wanted to drop in to say that, YES there are female science fiction fans! I remember coming home from Empire when I was five years old and telling my parents all about how scary darth vader was and how he chopped off luke’s hand and that, oh yeah, he was also luke’s father! I was hooked. From then on I was always “one of the guys” when it came to geeking out about certain things, until I got to college and discovered that there are a lot more of us fan girls out there! I was the first of my friends to get our place in line for Episode 3, and the first to simultaneously shed a tear and shake my head in disapointment at the end. GWC has been a great edition to my current fandom set and has made me cherish the geekiness even more.
