GWC Podcast #213

I can handle it! I could quit if I wanted to! I’m in control.

I just saw this clip

it has been years since i have seen it

I realized something…there is this human wart at work. i so, so wish i was captian picard for just five minutes. i would press a button and let a stranger drop dead if i could be capain picard for just five minutes, to have the fortitude to deal with this person in a picard way.

man.

Look

For us all to have a credible, adult, intelligent message board…we need to admit a few things:

First, BSG was staggeringly ahead in subtlety, nuance and darkness than any of the crap we are talking about on this thread.

Second: TNG had its moments. But at times it was so chock full of 90’s multiculturalism horseshit that - and mind you, i fracking was obsessed with it at the time - it doesn’t necessarily hold up all that well

Third: Firefly was awesome but you have to truly One of Us (eg, dyed in the wool geeks) to get it. I’m fine with that. I’m a geek. But recognize a normal person would think it’s ludicrous. I love Firefly. I tried showing it to my dearest friend who is a Star Wars fanatic but not one of us, really, and he thought i was insane and ridiculued me for weeks.

Fourth: Buffy and that other Wheedon vehicle is simply not watchable by an educated adult. If you want adult vampire porn that strikes the appropriate balance of kitsch and darkness, True Blood wipes its rectum with Buffy and the other Wheedom vampitre monstrosity.

I speak Truth.

It is really difficult to accept such broad statements.

I do not like any of Josh Whedons stuff, but I do not say it is crap. So many people love his work. You draw the line between liking Firefly and not liking Buffy/Angel. Someone else may have the same appreciation for Buffy/Angel as you do for Firefly. I dont think you should say it “isnt watchable by an educated adult.” I am sure there are many “educated adults” who would disagree with you. Its all a matter of OPINION, not FACT as you have attempted to make it.
Not everyone is going to agree on everything. It doesnt mean something is wrong with them if they dont care certain things, or if they see something you dont in elsewhere. It doenst mean they are or are not a geek. You just cant take words and make up your own definitions and tell everyone what is or is not. You cant expect everyone to adopt your personal categorization of things. It is opinion, not fact.

The way your friend treated you after you attempted to introduce them to Firefly is the same thing you just did to all the Buffy/Angel fans. Not saying something is wrong if you dont like Buffy/Angel. I dont care for them either. I am just saying that some do, and there is nothing wrong with that either.

^^ Don’t feed the trolls.

… and while I am on the subject, I despise it when people make statements such as: “oh you didnt like it because you just dont understand it.”

Dont get me wrong, because sometimes that is the case. But for the most part, just because I dont like something, doesnt mean I did not “GET” it.

Its ok to not like something, just dont expect everyone else to agree. Nor should you BASH the work or the fans of it.
There is enough sci-fi entertainment pouring out of every media source, I am sure there are overlapping areas for everyone here to find many points in common.

but he has jesus in his signature!

Jesus was a carpenter, he built the bridge.

i prefer buddy christ

Dogma- Kevin Smith

Only a Sith speaks in absolutes.

look, if someone loves Star Wars but diss Firefly because he feels it is ludicrous, there really isn’t much stock in his ridicules, seriously…

perhaps you shouldn’t mind those ridicules, and if you feel they are valid, please, there are aliens looking like a giant sack in Star Wars, if one can find Star Wars sane and entertaining, what is so ludicrous about Firefly?

i never understood that. how can he talk about siths dealing in absolutes and start his sentence with “ONLY”. (pot/kettle) lol

Speaking of vampire porn, here’s a True Blood pornody:

Better have Bill saying “Soo-kay is mahn!!” a buncha times

As an adult male with a Masters degree, and who loves Buffy/Angel, I would just like to say that I disagree with this statement. I am sure the guys on the military history discussion board that originally turned me on to the show would also disagree.

Just sayin’.

Never quite took to Angel, but I loved the first couple seasons of Buffy. So yes, it is quite possible for adult (and non-creepy!) males to enjoy them.

and Mal…

Whereas I’m not educated and I don’t like it, so the theory really is blown any way you look at it

i think the network really makes a difference too on the style of the shows. when you are on networks that wish to focus on teenagers such as WB, i am not amazed that Buffy and Angel are not more like True Blood. I mean, the day when CW starts to showing shows like Spartacus: Blood and Sand, that’s when we should worry…

Ok, let’s talk about Commander Shelby. First off, I admit she comes across as a douche in the Best of Both Words I and II, and for most viewers that’s all you ever know about her. But I really can’t be objective about Lt. Commander Elizabeth Shelby cuz I feel like I know her. The reason is, of course, the really awesome book series Star Trek New Frontier novels in which Shelby is First Officer on the USS Excalibur.

It’s interesting, because the dynamic between her and her captain, Captain Mackenzie Calhoun, is the reverse of that between Shelby and Riker in Best of Both Worlds. Calhoun is even more of a two-fisted rule-breaker than Capt. Kirk. And Shelby is always the one trying to temper him back to following the rules and regulations.

Yes, Shelby is always career oriented, and yes she one of those people that are born to command. But she’s a fully realized human being in those novels (and there are SEVENTEEN of the books so far by the way).

Anyway, I really recommend Star Trek New Frontier. It’s really best enjoyed by those who have seen all the Star Trek TNG series because a lot of references are made to it.

The crew of the Excalibur even includes other characters taken right from TNG. Aside from Shelby is, Robin Lefler (played by Ashley Judd, girl friend of Wesley Crusher in a couple of TNG episodes), and the Vulcan Dr. Selar who is in a couple of TNG episodes starting with “The Schizoid Man”.
Dr. Selar, in particular has a fascinating (no pun intended) story arc throughout the series. A great character.

I second Thots thots.

The dynamic between Calhoun and Picard and Calhoun and Jellico is awesome as well. Its a really fun read and has some of the richest characters I’ve seen in Trek. EU or otherwise.
