This week: Commander Shelby brings the yuppie douchiness in Best of Both Worlds Part 1 & 2. Mal talks rusty plows in a very special Firefly episode. We take listener calls. And we run down the week in geek including possible new sequel(s) for Independence Day, awesome new downloadable content in Dragon Age: Awakening, potential awesomeness in the Splice trailer, critical bashing on Clash of the Titans, and John Malkovich’s casting in Transformers 3.
Something wrong with your media server, she ain’t serving up the pods.
all good for me…downloading the cast goodness now…
Did Commander Shelby ever turn up again?
(Yeah, I could wiki it, but I relish the conversation.)
Good show as usual, but there’s just one little thing bugging me about your podcast lately. It’s how you spend all this time gushing over Firefly.
I’ve never watched this show, and I’ve never had any interest in it. I remember seeing a trailer for Serenity, and wondering what all the fuss was about. Whoever it was who said “Oh god, oh god, we’re all gonna die.” especially had my eyes rolling. It just seemed a lot like shows like Charmed, where everyone speaks in the same, sarcastic tone of voice, which I’ve always found rather grating.
Maybe I have the wrong idea about this show, but I don’t have time to find out for myself, trying to catch up on BSG at the moment. I love your show, guys, but I wish you’d devote a little more time to talking about stuff I’ve already had a chance to see.
Or maybe I’m just impatient, waiting to see if you’ll play a voice mail I sent to you, only to hear you talking more about Firefly. That’s probably why I’m annoyed.
only in the EU novels…specifally “New Frontier”…good stuff
You’re just annoyed because you haven’t seen Firefly.
Firefly is part of the current arc we’re in, right now. It’s also very dear to many hearts in the community.
I understand your frustration in wanting desperately to talk about something you’re currently into, but I encourage you to roll with things and give it a try.
Have you enjoyed anything Whedon? Buffy? Angel? Dr. Horrible?
C’mon… the water’s fine! Jump in! It’s a party!
…and welcome! (since I’ve not come across you until now!)
I tried watching both Buffy and Angel, and they just weren’t my thing. The stories never really caught my imagination, and the characters just seemed to be all the same pretty people with problems, even the ugly monster-like people. It was years ago, I just got a disturbing 90210/Charmed vibe from those shows (Buffy Especially) that made me stay away.
I forgot about the arc thing, though, so I’ll bear with this for now. I know there are a lot of people who really dig what Whedon does, but…I just don’t get him, I guess. Maybe it’s because I’m almost 30, and I grew up with a different kind of sci-fi/fantasy selection.
Hey, kid, I know what you’re saying. I loved the first couple years of Buffy, but sort of lost interest after that. (Seth Green was wronged!) Never got into Angel.
Do yourself a favor and get Firefly. It’s magic in a (very short) bottle.
Well, since everyone here seems to talk about it, I guess it’s worth a shot. types up Netflix at this very moment.
I never got into Buffy so didn’t ever watch Angel. Never watched 90210 or Charmed either. Now Firefly, I love this show and wish it had lasted longer. I grew up with a totally different kinda Sci-Fi than you being quite a bit past 30.
I’m with Pike, it’s magic. Give it a try!
Yeah, that’s about as true a statement as can be. I’ve been turned on to so much stuff here that I had either not known about, or ignored for whatever reason. The Hive Mind Knows!
Hee! The George Takei commercials! I love that this was in the news. NEWS!
What? No love for Brenda and Dylan? Sacrilege!
But anyway, the podcasts are in arcs, so if you’re not enjoying Firefly (which, in my opinion IS the best Whedon creation, so even if you didn’t like Buffy/Angel and the like (since both shows are not only a genre show but also a highschoolish WB/UPN show) you might seriously love Firefly. Give it a try when you have some free time.), they’d be onto some other series in a week or two anyway.
But anyway, it’s great when Chuck and gang talk about shows I do know and love, but sometimes it’s even better when they focus on shows that I’ve never watched (or dismissed earlier) - it’s a great way to (re)discover a series or a movie that you end up really liking even though you didn’t think you would (did). For me, that was (and still is - Man, they made a whole lot of seasons, it’ll take me years and years to catch up with it -) Stargate. And from the forums a few years back, this show - Firefly! (I was very iffy on the show before watching it, because, heck, it’s a cowboys in space show! Not really interested in that, even though I did like Whedon. But my gosh, am I glad I took the advice and did (and again and again. I’ve even worn out my DVDs rewatching this show, and I don’t think I’d be the same person now if I didn’t! heh)
But yeah, it’s always nice to have that in the podcasts and the forums - lots and lots of recommendations from people with great taste for things I never thought to even try watching.
You’re going to call everyone on the forum bastages when you finish because you’ll be angry that there isn’t anymore out there.
Firefly was one of those things for me.
I would now like to request that the Hive Mind go into sleep mode so I can catch up on all of the ossimness that has been recommended. There aren’t enough hours in the day for me to read/watch/listen to all of it. Damn you Hive Mind!!!
I know what you mean - I spent the entire day watching/listening to new content while doing other stuff, and I’m still nowhere near being caught up! As Chuck says though, that means there’s always something new to enjoy, so its not all bad!
Nice shout-out to Eliza. Your geek cred is untouchable. Well done sir, well done.
I know I am probably committing sci-fi blasphemy, but I have never cared for any of Josh Whedon’s stuff. I am not saying it’s crap, because it is obviously not seeing how many people love it. My girlfriend loves Buffy and Angel. She also likes Charmed and I’m not into that either.
While I am confessing my sins here, I might as well admit that I prefer the old Galactica to the new one.

Random notes:
-
Battlefield Earth book is waaaay better than the movie. That’s how I choose to remember it, any how.
-
Whole Firefly series streams free on Hulu.

Kudos was the Greek god of applause and props.
