GWC Podcast #213

Yeah, I think the original gets short shrift these days, probably because Galactica:1980 pretty much Lucased it.

And just trust us on Firefly.

Really like all the characters in there - really good stuff. Calhoun is pretty freakin awesome. Miss Kebron being a smartass a bit.

Doesn’t come out as often as I would like tho…

Bwaahahahahaaa! That was ossim!!

YES SIR…brilliant

The most recent New Frontier book was I thot one of the best.
Amazing what a character arc Dr. Selar has taken throughout the series.

The interaction early on between C’Swan and Kebron is priceless.

And what I jaw dropping cliff hanger it ends on!!! OMGs!!!

yeah - NOT happy we gotta wait until Jan 2011 for the next one - Blind Mans Bluff, I think it’s called

January 2011? January 2011?!! January 2011!!!
JANUARY 2011 !!!

There no WAY I can wait that long til I find out WTF is up with Admiral Nechayev!!
Peter David, how could you torture us so!!

It’s not Galactic, but here’s a watercooler – err, bloodcooler:

My comments on the idea that Buffy was written for the teen crowd.
Horse feathers!
I’m a 45 year old male, and I started watching Buffy and Angel in the middle of season 6, when I was turned on to the show by several male friends of mine that were discussing the show in a Military History discussion board that I used to belong to. (And they were older than I was.) Several coworkers (Including my supervisor) at the company that I worked at at the time, were into Buffy and there would be lengthy discussions about the previous episode during lunch.

What brought them and me in? It’s the Joss storytelling and writing, and watching the characters transform across the seasons, and some fantastic villians like Spike and Drusilla, The Mayor, Glory. And then there are the stand a lone episodes that are worth watching just because. Ask any of the Whedon Whores, we’ll be glad to give a list of great episodes that can match the power of “Objects in Space”

Yes. Get Firefly. The series is not to be missed. GWCers turned me onto it, and I shall be forever greatful. Give it a chance. It’s funny and touching and dark and ends waaay, waaay too quickly. And then there’s the movie, Serenity. Which I just might have to throw in the DVD player now, because it’s just that frakking good.

say, isn’t the Hive mind a Borg reference?

I swear to gods, my friend, that is the best and cutest picture I’ve ever seen of Morena ever — better than her as Inara or her has Commander V.
Thanks for sharing that great story.

xcant wait–gonna be the awesomeness

Coming to the party late, only just managed to finish 213 this morning on the way to work (lots of Dr Who stuff happening earlier this week with the new series starting)

A few pickups.

I never got into Buffy, etc, watched about half the first season but it just never clicked for me. However, Firefly is one of the best series (never mind Sci Fi) ever made. The only real bad thing about Firefly is that every time I re-watch it I am filled with sadness that it ended after just 14 stories. Really one of those things that makes you want to scream out at an unfair universe.

Re Independence Day, will Jayne be back!?

The grid of geek fans is just awesome.

With regards old vs new BSG. Old BSG has the huge advantage that most fans first watched it when they were about 10 and filled with first time round Star Wars joy. Back then BSG was by a million miles the coolest thing on TV to my 10 year old self, and after wanting every Star Wars toy in existence, I wanted everything from BSG. It is very, very hard for anything to compete with that memory (one reason Star Wars is so unassailable)

But. A couple of years back I bought the complete original series box set (but not the flying bike felgercarp). Watching the original pilot movie brought it all back, it was fun, cheesy, quintessetially eighties and great. But then as I pushed on into the series proper, which I didn’t really remember as well as the pilot, it got increasingly shonky. Some of those episodes were bad and by no stetch of the imagination better than modern BSG. You could clearly see them re-using other shows sets to save money, (i.e. the western episode, then the medieval castle episode, etc) and it was pretty bad stuff. Nowhere near as bad as the abomination that was Galactica 80 mind you.

Trouble is, I have reasonably fond memories of the Starbuck episode from Galactica 80, and I find myself wondering if I should pick up a cheap box set of it so I can watch that again. This may be dangerous, as even age 10 I thought Galactica 80 was bad, so Adama only knows how bad it will seem now!

Danger, Will Robinson! Danger! waves arms wildly

Cue slow motion jump in front of the Galactica 1980 box set…

nnnnoooooooooo!!!

Don’t DO it TPO!! You’ll KILL yourseeeeelllfff!!
desperately clutches at heart and hair a la old 80’s commercial

Not exclusively.

AAHHGGG!!! It burns my eyes!!!
