GWC Podcast #212

Makeitsosnort!

Ok, fess up, you’ve had that on your hard drive for years and have been waiting for an opportunity to share it.

I concur. Xena had more than a “titillation factor”. Xena was almost customed designed for the 14 to 17 year old masturbatory demographic. I surmise one could watch Xena with a stopwatch, and not surpass 15 second intervals without at least one glimpse of high quality cleavage. Kevin Sorbo and his goofy sidekick (who always reminded me of the “Greatest American Hero” guy) offered none of those advantages. It was Kevin kicking bad guys, all of whom would attack sequentially. It never occurred to them to attack at ONE TIME, damnit.

Great discussion of Xena and Picard this week. I watched Xena periodically when it was on and liked it. If I remember correctly there was an episode where Ares and Aphrodite lost their powers that was particularly amusing but I don’t remember many of the specifics. Come to think of it I seem to remember liking all the episodes that involved Aphrodite…

Aaaanyway, I also saw the episode involving Odysseus and remember being slightly peeved that she had to help string the bow. I know they like to mess with the classics, but that was going a bit far.

Regarding the Picard arc, another episode that would have fit perfectly would be the 6th season’s Tapestry, the one where Q allows Picard to go back in time and avoid being stabbed through the heart by the Nausicaans. Upon doing so he realizes that his current life completely unravels. The episode makes a nice bookend with The Inner Light, because while Picard did learn what he was missing by not being a family man and settling down, he subsequently learns that he really does enjoy the benefits of the reckless ambition of his youth and all that he has accomplished. Tapestry I think tells us more about who Picard is than does almost any other episode.

Chuck! How dare you let get Sean get sick and make the podcast have to be…

Okay, I can only be a tool for so long.

Great podcast as usual, and I am amazed at how well you make Sean sound given that he was not in the room with you guys. You can make remote Sean sound better than many people can make their podcasts sound normally.

here is Hercules, and his goofy sidekick

Yes! I always thought of “Tapestry” as the counterpart or companion piece to “The Inner Light”, but I forgot the name. Thanks.

Oh, I also liked the George Takei Sharp commercial. However, my wife was a little depressed when she noticed the “Actor Portrayal” message at the bottom of the screen. I guess there’s a whole generation down there who don’t know who he is and probably just assume its a homage to Lost…

Edit: I also wanted to add that Lucy Lawless was a guest on NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me last January to play Not My Job. She talks Xena and Sparticus. You can listen here.

As a matter of basic civic responsibility, all video stores should have all of Star Trek: TNG in stock for rental. I’m just saying.

What are these “video stores” you speak of?

The same goes for public libraries.

Last year I heard a guy about 20 refer to Takei as “the guy from Heroes”. I was going to go all “get off my lawn you young’in!” on him but then I realized I was only a few years older than him, and he was just a moron. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ah, great opportunity to build a new Star Trek fan. Did you mention TOS to him?

I honestly don’t remember if I said: “I’m sorry, did you just refer to George Takei as “the guy from Heroes”? That man is a living sci-fi ledgend.” or if I just carried on with my day. As I mentioned earlier, he was a moron.
