GWC Podcast #207

@39:00 Sean states the monkey was not a Nazi. Au contraire mon frere.

As you can see, the monkey gives the Nazi salute. Clearly the monkey was a Nazi.

Nazi Monkey is my next band name.

Great cast guys.

I remember the first time I saw Serenity. I was watching it as it was being broadcast, so it was the last episode they aired. The only thing I could think was this was the episode that the Fox execs hated so much that they wanted a new pilot? I thought it was amazing. At that point, I had already grown to love the characters at that point.

Now, we just have to spam the answering machine with “Sean sucks” messages to even out what happened to Chuck…and for Chuck to feel better of course. (:

I had forgotten or didn’t realize that’s how it aired. I didn’t get into Firefly until the movie.

Nazi Monkeys… I hate those guys…

However, in Sean’s defense, while I view Nazi Humans as Big E Evil, I tend to see Nazi Monkeys as small e evil…

As if anyone could just choose one Firefly episode to watch over and over. On some level, Firefly is pretty invincible - I really do love the entirety of the show.

But this is fascinating. I really love Out of Gas, Ariel, and Objects in Space, but I also love Our Mrs Reynolds, Shindig, and Jaynestown as well. But if I really have to choose, it would be the first group, so camp B.

I can’t imagine having watched Firefly out of sequence though - for me, that part in the pilot where Simon falls for “Kaylee’s dead” and cut to the gang laughing their asses off was the moment when I got that tingle and I thought, this is going to be a really special show. How would I feel if I saw the pilot at the end instead? Hmph. Best Whedon show (well, for me), and the most mistreated by a network.

Chinese in Firefly: It is true that sometimes it is really difficult to get what the actors are saying sometimes, because the pronunciation is pretty nutty at times. It’s also amusing that a lot of the ‘cussing’ are more of the “you bad egg!” “you rascal!” “you’re such an hiney” rather than “frak you” or “you dick!” or “you’re such an asshole” variety. Very adorable cute ‘cussing’. But I love that the mix of English and Mandarin - because that actually does happen now with someone who’s billingual talking to someone who’s also billingual (in the same languages).

And, loving the HP porn titles. My fave would have to be the Deathly Swallows and the Ass Gang Bang.

I don’t know how to feel about Nazi Monkey! If I think him adorable, what does that make me?

A Kevin Smith arc would be pretty awesome, though I think I’ve had way too many discussions on his trilogy in school.

i need my summer glau…

my favorite part of the pilot is when Mal just knows that lady is going to shoot him again just because she was being too nice to him. he goes anyway and surely the lady mayor shoots him again…

The sword/gun scene in Raiders of the Lost Arc has a funny backstory. Apparently, there was an elaborate sword & whip fight planned. They had the blocking, had practiced the choreography, laid out the elements for it, everything.

Problem was… a bunch of the crew had dysentery, including Harrison Ford. Hot weather, not awesome water, Tunisia, this stuff happens to travelers.

Now, imagine just how anxious you would be to engage in a bunch of athletic jumping around and fighting with your insides threatening to erupt in the least cinematographic way possible.

Mr. Ford suggested “Why don’t we just shoot the bastard?” to Spielberg, and movie magic happened.

All respect to Badgerspoon, I vote for StevieSpin’s titles – most variety in the subject matter. But when we get a few dozen Harry Potter pron titles, everyone’s a winner.

I watched Firefly on Fox, and it underwhelmed me at the time. I think the out-of-sequence-ness of it contributed greatly to that. I didn’t even bother seeing Serenity in the theaters.

I forget the exact sequence Fox showed 'em in, but I think they established River’s ability to kick ass much earlier on. First time I watched the DVDs, I thought, “OOOOOHHHH, I get it now! They didn’t knoooow.”

I think the episodes get better every time I watch 'em. They’re so dense. Little things fly by, like Kaylee loving fruit. And the Mandarin zooms by too, at first.

“Shindig” is so awesome. It’s great to see Kaylee go from being dumped all over to becoming, literally, the belle of the ball.

As die hard as I am about the show now, I have to admit I didnt even bother to watch it when it was on tv. I heard the premise (i think I heard it billed as ‘cowboys in space’) and thought to myself, “this is the dumbest idea for a show Ive ever heard” It wasnt till I caught a glimpse of Serenity (the movie) on Stars or something and went out to get a copy and watch it from the beginning that I realized how phenomenal it really was. Serenity is such a great pilot, only a moron would think Train Job would be a better introduction to the series. If I had a time machine there are a whole lot of fox execs that would be getting swift kicks to the testicles.

My theory is that Fox and NBC execs come from the same gene pool. Must be why they hate each other so much. d:

I have a vague memory of watching a teaser for Firefly in the summer before it aired. I thought, “Hmm, sounds like that could be cool, too bad I’ll never get to watch it.” (I was moving back to Korea.) But, that was pre-BitTorrent!

In late 2004, I heard Evo Terra and Mike Mennenga talking about it on the Slice of Scifi podcast. I had forgotten seeing the teaser, but they kept talking about this cancelled show. Finally, I had to seek it out and heh, I live there now. :stuck_out_tongue:

My favorite episode is Out of Gas. After all, Serenity IS my favorite character. So, camp B.

<_< Hate to break it to you but there was BitTorrent in 04

Shhh. I was gonna let that slide. (Hell, technically it was out in '02, but I dunno if someone could have gotten the series then.)

During the cast, a discussion was wondering how Indy’s hat always seem to stay on. In the bonus disk for the Trilogy Box Set, Harrison Ford is shown stapling the hat onto his head while filming The Last Crusade. Harrison Ford is one tough dude.

i am sorry to inform the forumn, but the message i left of Harry Potter porn was vastly superior to the drivel that was submitted. And alas, it was not played. I sort of worried that i went a bit overboard when i left the voicemail. i suppose Chuck reached the same conclusion. if i simply missed the deadline, i urge our fearless leaders to share with the community what i so labored to prepare. this is a work of art i tell you.

Yes, but I didn’t have computer access in Korea until around 2004.

Still listening to this ep and not sure if it’s been mentioned already, but when the reaver ship is coming, the thing Inara has (geez, I was going to say the thing in Inara’s box, ahem.) anyway, it was a syringe, the contents of which has never been explained explicitly. However, reportedly, Morena did say at a convention that
. . . . . Inara was dying and that the syringe was something related to that
I had assumed the syringe was poison, so much more elegant a corpse then one with bullet holes or stab wounds in so seemed right for Inara.

Funny with the out of order pilot, I’m certain that here in England it was in the correct order I can’t imagine watching Train Job first. Clearly channel management should stop screwing with how the people who made the show did it since that’s what they are paying them for after all.

Funny coincidence I listened to show #86 befor this one which also talks about Firefly and Indiana Jones.

Thanks, Pike, couldn’t figure that out!

Yeah, I always thought it was a suicide syringe, too. I’ve also heard the theory that it’s something that would kill an attempted rapist.

There’s also been lots of speculation about Book’s past. While it was never explained in the show or the movie, we can guess. Luckily, there is a Book-centric comic coming sometime in the future! I thought it would have been out by now, but Scott Allie told us at ComicCon that there would definitely be one.
