GWC Podcast #207

Still working my way through the cast, but I need to get to bed soon so I’ll hit pause for now.

OMG, Sean, I totally remember those book & tape combos! And Raiders was my favorite, so I agree on Indy in the turban in the Temple Room being the quintessential image of the adventurous archaeologist.

Re: Book’s backstory–My friend Jen, a Browncoat down in Raleigh, read the shooting scripts for the episodes online and apparently there’s an exchange of dialogue in “The Message” between Jayne and Book that hints at the Shepherd either being a dirty cop or having dealt with dirty cops. Which makes sense. I was just wondering if anyone else had read that.

I think my “I love this show!” moment with Firefly was the Crazy Ivan that Wash pulls to evade the Reaver ship. I’ve just always been fascinated with that term ever since Hunt for Red October.

The general fan reading is that Book was, at some point, an operative himself. He ‘got out’ at some point, but somehow retained enough cred (at what cost?) to get himself fixed up at the nearest Alliance vessel when the situation demanded.

What’s really going to bake your noodle is; what if Book was an agent of the alliance?

Two points:

Audra - Mitt Romney has not been the governor of Mass for several years.

Chuck - none of you guys have ever tried a date? Do i sound like a new york jackass when i ask “what the hell”?

Sean - you are smoking crack when you say that Marian is not a damsel in distress. Let’s review the facts, shall we?

  • She almost gets her face seared by a red hot iron poker held by a demonic Nazi, until Indy saves her

  • She gets carried away by Gestapo agents, until Indy saves her

  • She gets thrown into an Egyptian tomb and would have been eaten by snakes, until Indy saves her

  • She gets captured in a tent and would have been butt raped by a French archaeologist, but didn’t because Indy saved her

  • She would have devoured by homicidal angels, but doesn’t because Indy told her to close her eyes and save her

So i hope the above proved that you screwed up BIG TIME. Chuck and Audra, i love the podcast - i really do - but when one of you says something wrong i’d like it if the others challenged that person. THere’s nothing wrong with a little dramatic tension.

Jonathan: I heard that they go straight to fight club after recording the show.

I think the Indy-Marian relationship is some of the best onscreen chemistry of the era. They’re totally under each other’s skin. Classic movie couple.

Dude, simmer down. I agree with Sean that Marion isn’t your typical damsel in distress; she’s more like an ally to Indy and she’s certainly not pleading for his protection at every turn.

A lot of those instances you cited weren’t exactly fair fights. Marion isn’t a Slayer, she’s human. And when she’s outnumbered by Nazis and/or their minions, she might be carried off or thrown in a tomb but she’s not going down without a fight. Frying pan fu–come on! And she likely would have escaped from Belloq’s tent d’amour had she not been intercepted by the dude with the scary coat hanger. Again, outnumbered. Can we at least agree that she’d be more helpful than Kate Capshaw’s character?

And I’ve never tried a date, either. Perhaps I was traumatized by the movie and feared they would kill me ded.

Hey all, recent new listener and first time poster. Thanks for the great podcast, makes me laugh every time.

Just wanted to drop a quick line re Firefly. In anticipation of this week’s cast I watched the first couple of discs again over the weekend, and once again it made me so sad.

As soon as that music comes in, it really affects me. The reason being that this show is so good, and I love those characters so much, that it upsets me every time to watch knowing it was cancelled after just 13 episodes.

I still struggle to get my head round this, like most Sci Fi fans I’m used to the risk of cancellation. But most of the time if the show is good enough for you to care you get least a couple of seasons. In fact usually when stuff gets axed if you’re honest you can see why (hello T:SCC). But I can’t think of any other show that was so very good but also so very short.

So, I’ll watch the rest now, but I know I’m going to be more sad at the end (especially when we get to that bit of Serenity.)

Anyway, that was a nice wimpy way to say hello to the community! I’ll try and be a bit more stoic next time

I agree. Welcome to the forum!

We are alpacas. Not drama llamas.

Welcome.

BWAAAHAHAAAA!!!

beautiful.

I also agree! and welcome!

You’re in good hands, here.

Welcome aboard! Yep, a rewatch is always bittersweet. I’ve advised a couple people to not watch Serenity… not that there’s anything wrong with it, but just so the story won’t end.

What’s the first rule of Fight Club Thunder…

Welcome in TPO! Enjoy yourself…

I agree, Marion is not the typical damsel in distress. She puts up a good fight all the way through that movie. She thinks quick on her feet, and as Sean said, anyone who can own and run a bar in the middle of BFE has to be pretty tough. All Kate Capshaw did in Temple of Doom was scream, fix her hair, and whine about the bugs. She was completely helpless compared to Marion.

Welcome aboard, and yeah, I know what you mean.

Okay, finally finished the podcast tonight.

It’s Blue Sun, guys, not Blue Sky. This odd corporate logo that is always sort of lingering in the background. Here it is being modeled by Jayne:

And I’m sure someone will correct me on this if I’m wrong, but didn’t they film Rebecca Gayheart as Inara first? Then Joss realized it wasn’t working and they brought in Morena. I vaguely remember him saying something to Jewel like, “Don’t worry, we’ll film this scene again with another actress,” and she was like, “Okay, crazy director man.”

Not that I don’t like Rebecca (she was great in Dead Like Me), but she doesn’t have the same presence as Morena.

I’ve got a Blue Sun shirt, btw. Looks great with my kilt & pirate cap on TLAPD each September, along with an open blouse/shirt over it.

They mention bringing in Morena as a replacement in the commentary, but they never named who she replaced.

yep. don’t remember the source, but it definitely was Rebecca Gayheart

Funny you should say Chuck that Inara went to the Juilliard of the 'verse, cause Morena Baccarin went to the real juilliard!

I’ve got the dino t-shirt, too

(and a blue sun one… I love when I wear it when traveling, people in airports come up and tell me firefly’s cool. because it is :D)
