GWC Podcast #186: Stargate, Part 3

We watch Stargate Continuum in our last podcast before the SG Universe premiere — and enjoy a visit from Amanda Tapping! Highlights: we love Continuum’s fun take on the classic time-travel story, debate what makes one timeline more valid than another, hear Ms. Tapping’s take on Samantha Carter, women in sci-fi, and whether or not Cam ate Carter’s home-baked cookies, explain how Firefox, claymation Rudolph, AvP, National Treasure, Transformers, and Captain Ron relate to Continuum, hear Chuck’s rant about how geeks are represented on TV, and marvel at the pervasiveness of Stargate in the sci-fi world. Ha haaaaaa, first laugh. JK

Chuck, can’t believe you let Audra get away with mentioning Strwy t Hv*n without repercussions!

Yay! Amanda Tapping!

Even with bad audio, I’m like ‘Woooo!’

I saw Firefox when I was young and couldn’t wait to see the actual flight scenes. Now, whenever it’s on, I just remind myself to watch the last 20-25 minutes. (: I laugh when Clint Eastwood had to think in Russian.

I do like Ben Browder compared to Anderson. I like them both about equal for different reasons. Browder has just a way about him and he’s comedic and likable like Anderson is, but different. Beau Bridges has some big shoes to fill and he did his best, but doesn’t quite make compared to Davis.

Th president, William Devane, did 250 episodes of Knots Landing according to IMDB. pushes dweeb glasses up the bridge of my nose

Teal’c changes his hair about every other season.

Wow, you guys are so random in some podcasts. (:

Everyone from BSG is moving to either Smallville or Dollhouse, man. Seriously…

For the 200th podcast, Audra should do the cast as Chiana or Carter. (: Or, Vala even.

Great job with Amanda’s audio. Even though I’m hearing impaired, I made out 90-95% of it.

Oh! I knew it was going to be Amanda Tapping, she was at the top of my list of people who I thought it would be. Great Podcast!

I’ve been so enjoying the Stargate arc. Thanks guys, as always it’s so much fun to listen.

Thanks for that great interview with Amanda Tapping!

I’m now up to Season 5 in SG-1. I’ve laughed and cried during this series.

Good cast as per usual. What always amazes me is how wonderful and professional Amanda Tapping is in her interviews. As you mentioned, she’s been asked pretty much ALL of the same questions MANY times before, and in the case of your interview, it was sandwiched in the middle of her responsibilities on-set for “Sanctuary.” Regardless, she has a positive, fresh approach to each and every question, and finds a way to have fun with the interview! She really is something special, that “Emperess of Sci-Fi”!

Not quite done with the cast yet, but I love the discussion on Continuum, which is really a great watch.

Coincidentally, another podcast I listen to is doing a discussion on the other SG1 movie, The Ark of Truth this week.
The Gateworld Podcast

you kno what’s cool about the bad connection? if you listen to the noise, it almost sounds like gun fire on the batte field. I mean the noise matches Amanda Tapping’s speech, but that made the noise more organic, like two armies returning fire to one another…

Anyone else hoping for an interview with Michael Shanks?

Actually, I was expecting Ben Browder or Claudia Black. I didn’t dream they’d get the Queen of Sci Fi to sit still long enough for a few questions.

Just a little heads up, I believe it was said that Continuum occurs before The Ark of Truth. It’s actually the other way round. I believe there’s talk of more movies as well. That should be good.

An interview with Claudia would be awesome. Heh, I wonder what she’s in these days.

Thanks for another great podcast guys!

Stargate is one of those shows that when I caught it on I enjoyed. but, when it started it was on Showtime which I didn’t have, so I never really knew for sure when it was on. This is mainly because even after it moved I had essentially dismissed it as being unable to be watched. I absolutely LOVED the movie!

Chuck hit the nail on the head with the tv geek rant. I’ve been thinking much the same thing for a while now. Hollywood loves its stereotypes, doesn’t it?

I agree with your rant Chuck, but I think it extends farther then Geeks. Like Aset says, Hollywood loves stereotypes. Geeks stick out to us, because we are Geeks, and we know lots of them in real life. It rings strongly when something is untrue. I think if you look at how the majority of any group of people are portrayed you will find the same problem. Athletes. Cheerleaders. Artists. Politicians. The military. The list goes on!

Thank you guys so much for doing this arc. Between these podcasts and an SG-1 marathon last Friday, I’ve started rewatching my SG-1 DVDs. Anybody have any strong opinions one way or the other on Dr. Fraiser, because she’s honestly probably my favorite character on the show, tied with Teal’c. I haven’t seen Continuum yet, though I might if the afternoon gets slow (yay youtube!) but I understand she wasn’t in it, which makes me sad.

Also, hoping for an interview eventually with Michael Shanks or Christopher Judge. I saw them at a con a few years back and they made my stomach hurt from laughing so hard.

Agreed. Just don’t get me started on the portrayal of teachers…

I too am one who hasn’t seen Stargate, the series… it’s next on my list, once I finish my epic watch-all-Trek-ever-made project

Or the portrayal of Southerners. But I think it’s gradually becoming more acceptable to be a “geek” which might help viewing audiences broaden their minds or help geeks on the writing staff of TV shows get their voices heard.

I’ve watched Stargate here and there (actually saw more of Atlantis than SG-1), but after listening to the podcasts I think I’ll make that the next series to catch up on. I really admire Amanda Tapping and the late Don Davis, and Gary “Walter” Jones was such a joy to talk to at Dragon*Con when I bumped into him a few years ago. I caught part of the marathon Friday in my hotel room while I was in New York and thought of y’all. It was a nice little respite from running around the city.

Oh, Audra, the quote about “not participating in activities where balls fly at my nose” is actually from Clueless. It’s the excuse that Amber uses to not have to play tennis in PE, because of her recent nosejob.
