Oh the other hand, I think a great portrayal of a geek or nerd is Nerd Herd #3, Mr. Chuck Bartowski.
Another great portrayal of nerds/geeks recently has been some of the characters on Defying Gravity, especially AJ. They’re not all role models, but they’re definitely outside the stereotypes.
Heh, the portrayal of gay characters is the worst. Most gay men aren’t effeminate at all; but unfortunately the ones open about their sexuality tend to be effeminate to one degree or another, and writers love to write slapstick gay characterizations that play off of that (it’s soo annoying).
Sigh, yeah this is very true also.
For anyone interested, the podcasts SciFi Talk and Geek Syndicate both have great interviews with Amanda Tapping. Geek Syndicate also has an awesome interview with Damian Kindler and SciFi Talk has one as well(along with interviews with both Michael Shanks and Christopher Judge).
Also, I second Seans thoughts on Sanctuary. It is a very cool show and from what I’ve seen of season 2 its gotten a heck of a lot better.
I’d noted Chuck’s impending rant ramp-up on Twitter and was wondering when or where it was going to surface, and what had sparked it. Would have been tough to convey in 140 characters or less!
SeelixSeesAll made a good point regarding a pretty positive portrayal of geeks on TV: The series How I Met Your Mother. Although not the overt brainiacs of Big Bang Theory, the cast constantly drops cool geek-like references (lots of Star Wars especially) in the dialogue, thinks getting an Indiana Jones whip and hat for a birthday present is the best thing ever, etc., yet they still manage to dress well, comb their hair, wash, have relationships, and hold down fulltime jobs.
Loved the podcast! I can’t wait for the next one and SGU! I loved the interview as well.
I added Cosmos to my netflix instant watch Q and will watch it next week, I also have to watch Season 1 of Sanctuary cause
I missed most of it.
Just of the top of my head, I think the no. 1 Geek made good would be President Obama!
WOW. Really? Are you watching in Original order?
every Tuesday, or Treksday, as we have come to call it. talos keeps us on the straight and narrow, watching in order of airdate, not production. we’re currently on S3, which can be a trial, as anyone on “The Empath” frakparty can attest
next on the menu, I believe, will be The Animated Series, then TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT. not sure where we’re sandwiching in the movies
What Lady D said. and today’s Treksday! woohoo!
(I did TNG, DS9 and now Voyager on my own, Enterprise’s up next).
Hm maybe we could do the movies when XI comes out on DVD?
Before Voyager should be ok.
or we could do I-VI + XI after TAS and VII-X post TNG?
Oh, and since no one mentioned it so far, thanks for bumping the time back up to (almost) 2 hours. I really do think you guys need the time to really say everything on your mind about the topic, and still have time for the normal silliness. (Which you know we love!)
Indeed!!!
Thanks for the great arc guys! I have to admit, I knew almost nothing about SG-1 when this started but have since become a fan. It’s nice to have another serialized syndicated sci-fi show that fills the boots of Star Trek, TNG. I just can’t believe that I haven’t gotten into it until now! So much content…so little time!
The thing that sold me on the show? First episode: General Hammond is listening to this A**hole military/ govermnet stooge who is saying how he should sacrifice one of the SG-1 team in order to learn more about the Goa’uld technology etc. Rather than debate the guy, Hammond just looks at him and says, “WHAT KIND OF SOLDIER ARE YOU!”. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Calling a spade a spade is so refreshing.
Thanks for the recommendation!
D
p.s. super psyched about robotech on hulu, lets do an arc!
That’s right! Thanks for the correction. The one I was thinking of is the Brady Bunch movie where (is it Jan?) gets her nose flattened by a thrown football.
Or is it Marcia, the “pretty one”? Marcia, Marcia, Marcia. I don’t remember much about the movie, other than being weirded out that Sheriff Buck from American Gothic was playing the patriarchal Brady. Weird.
I know you mentioned a lot of leather-wearing in SG: Atlantis, but didn’t you love Teyla? She was always so calm and cool in the midst of chaos. I wish I could be like her when the e-mails are flying fast and furious on deadline days. Instead of like an ineffectual McCay.
And the best part of the quote is what Cher’s frien Dion says after the quote:
Amber: “My plastic surgeon says I’m not allowed to participate in any activity where balls fly at my face.”
Dion: “There goes your social life…”
hehe
D
Yeah, it was Jan.
It’s always Jan…
She’s the existential hero of the seventies.
