GWC Podcast #185: Stargate, Part II

This week we add Atlantis to the continuing SG-1 discussion. Highlights: we discuss Stargate’s portrayal of the military, again note Stargate’s continual references to history, culture, and Earth mythology, enjoy Atlantis’ update of two SG-1 also-ran characters, compare Atlantis to later TV trek, and generally enjoy the ‘gate. Remember: We’re doing a call show during the Stargate arc, so don’t forget to call in your thoughts at 214-296-9229.

Yay, I’m “someone on the forum” again :stuck_out_tongue:

As for Sheppard’s romantic relationships, McKay has called him Captain Kirk on several occasions.

I was actually introduced to Stargate through Atlantis. I got home and flipped on the TV and it was on the Sci-Fi channel. They were showing The Siege Part 1, which drew my interest. At the end of the Siege 3 parter, I was hooked.

Rodney is my favorite character because he’s essentially the person most nerds wish they could be. Even though I’m not as sarcastic as him, I appreciate that he is always willing to speak his mind. A couple other good Rodney episodes that show how talented David Hewlett is are Duet (Season 2 Episode 4) and The Shrine (Season 5 Episode 6)

Oh,the Super Target thing made me laugh like crazy because I was walking into Super Target when you said it.

Here are a few of the fun science fiction references on SG-1 and Atlantis

Hey guys. Liked the cast. On thing about Atlantis that ticked me off was how they turned the Black guy (Lt. Aiden Ford) into a junkie. It seems to be a recurring theme. It was done a few years ago on one of the CBS CSI shows and 15 years ago on Babylon 5 with Dr. Franklin. Granted, Ronon was a better character than Ford was (and it’s interesting how they replaced one Black guy with another), but still.

Other than that I did like Atlantis, but I liked SG-1 better. The wraith were a poor villain in my opinion. And, I think it was a mistake for them to get rid of Weir.

Btw, Continuum (the time travel one) is a great movie. I didn’t dig Arc so much because I thought the replicator plot was a weak filler.

all of Teal’s indeed reminds me of Tuvok…

I couldn’t take the Wraith seriously, every time they came onscreen I kept seeing Marilyn Manson:

To be fair to Atlantis, that was the actor’s fault…Rainbow Sun Francks. He was late all the time, not knowing lines, etc. So they got rid of him in a, I thought, was pretty interesting way.

Ah, ok. I didn’t know that. Thanks.

I guess I should be fair in that Saul Tigh was a alcoholic in BSG, where as his counterpart in the original was Black so…

One thing I always thought was neat about Stargate was the Peter Deluise involvement. He’s the guy from 21 Jumpstreet (which I grew up watching), so when I found out what a huge role he took in Stargate, it felt like “one of us” was running things.

“Hey, how YOU doin’?”

He’s a talented director, and funny too. His cameos in Stargate were always excellent, and he just generally rules.

From ze Wikipedias:

In 1997, he began working on the series Stargate SG-1, serving as producer, writer, director, and creative consultant. He has appeared, normally as an extra, in every episode of the series he has directed. He went on to work as executive producer, director and writer for the Stargate SG-1 spin-off Stargate Atlantis,[2] and has additionally been slated to direct at least two episodes in the upcoming spin-off Stargate Universe.

On the subject of Stargate Universe: I am quite concerned. The premise of the show sounds… awful. “Hey dudes, let’s do Atlantis again, but this time, let’s cram some old Star Trek into it” is how I imagine the pitch began. If it’s a good show, it will be in spite of the setup and will be because some seriously good folks made it good.

Random Stargate thoughts…

I’m going to give SGU a chance, even though I was no fan of SGA with the cast juggling and not keeping Torri Higginson for the duration (I thought she was the “heart” of the show). When I heard the premise behind Warehouse 13, I was not excited, and it has turned out to be one helluva good show (although the extra short “season” is a huge bummer). I have a more positive initial feeling about SGU with the talent they have behind the scenes, writing, directing and producing, so I’m actually kind of pumped.

I think another thing detracted from the final couple years of SG-1 and the first couple of years of SGA: the crews were doing double-duty. It had to be damned near impossible for those people to give 100% to both projects during that time period.

here’s a thought : If Stargate:Atlantis is to SG-1 what DS9 was to Star Trek; then Stargate: Universe is more like Voyager? …Ain’t it? Voyager meets BSG??

You’re not the first to make that analogy and won’t be the last. SGU could be ok if they quickly get a 7 of 9…

I don’t know anything about SG:U past the basic premise, but here are things I hope they don’t do:

  1. Don’t have a token ‘Wraith’ character (scientist?) who joins their team. It’s a long established television mechanism for easy drama, have someone who was “the enemy” be part of your team so you can sit back and let it write itself. They can’t all be Worf’s an Teal’Cs.

  2. Don’t immediately establish The Villain in the first episode so you know exactly who all the major players are. Star Trek Voyager did this with the Angry Space Hippies With Dirty Space Dredlocks (aka, Kazon) and… they fell flat. TNG almost did this with the fierce Ferengi traders (Oh no! Capitalism!) and had to recover. Compare these hasty introductions with the more gradual & menacing reveal of The Borg. That was spread out over a while, with an early episode making mysterious mention of lost colonies at the Romulan border. The actual reveal with Q’s assistance followed by a season of forboding was great.

  3. Don’t fill the ship with pantsloads of mysterious new technology. We’ve already had the basic parameters of Ancient equipment established throughout the previous two series, so if you’re going to suddenly have holotoilets and space elevators or whatever… it’s gonna stretch credibility. By the end of Atlantis, humanity can apparently run Ancient computers with the deftness of a 14 year old updating his MySpace profile with crummy music while downloading porn with LimeWire. It’s just not believable if they can’t control anything in the ship.

  4. Show Doesn’t Need A Neelix.

  5. Are they still going to just have machine guns? At some point, the folks outfitting the Atlantis group ‘forgot’ to equip them with zat guns, magical beam weapons that give them a stun option. Think of all the situations where NOT just shooting holes in someone might have been useful, guys. Or were the folks on Atlantis just jerks?

I guess the last one is more of a commentary on Atlantis, but it’ll be interesting to see if they continue this.

When you are sending a bunch of heavily trained infantry with your group of civilian scientists it is always best to provide them with weaponry that they are familiar with. Not some alien technology that they will not know how to repair or feild strip while under fire, and the only reason zat guns were used as often as they were by SG1 was because there was a ready supply of them on the dead Jaffa.

There are no Jaffa in the Pegasus Galaxy. So why bring a weapon you cannot repair, recharge or replace to a unknown region of space. Just bring with you what you know and feel comfortable with. And if you find a better weapon there… take it off of their dead bodies!

And so they did… they started collecting Wraith weapons and using them quite successfully during the series. Problem solved.

Indeed, I love that Penhall was so much a part of the show. I just wished all the DeLuise boys were such a positive part of the show. And yes, I’m talking to you, Pete Shanahan!

According to the press I have seen for it, all the main characters are human.

From what I understand there is not a main bad guy (Wraith, Goa’uld, Ori) at least in the beginning of the series.

Yeah… they might be having that.

  1. Show Doesn’t Need A Neelix.

Agreed.

Awesome Podcast! I wonder who the guest star will be next week, I bet it’s one of four people.

Amanda Tapping
Michael Shanks
Chris Judge
RDA (He doesnt do interviews very much from what I hear but I will add him to my guess)

Also it could be Ben Browder (that would be awesome!) or Claudia Black or anyone from Atlantis.

Eenie meenie meiney… Robert C. Cooper. That’s my guess.
