GWC Podcast #183: Dr. Horrible

And that just sent me on a Fatboy Slim kick… Love that video!

Great cast. I am a huge Dr. Horrible fan. I think Superhero and Villian stories can be so great when done well.

Best of Felicia Day

By the way, with that haircut and shirt, she almost looks like Kira Nerys.

Chuck, are you going to post that recommended viewing list for the first Stargate podcast sometime soon?

Great ep! That Lolli-Ladron line had me cracking up, good work Audra.

I am officially announcing myself the Founder and Supreme Commander of the Lolli Ladron League, articles of confederation and uber cool logo forthcoming.

Only a little into this podcast, but I’m loving it and regretting even more that I keep getting talked out of watching “Commentary: The Musical” in favor of ST:TNG episodes :stuck_out_tongue: Re: the Life of Brian scene with Biggus Dickus (the part where he’s being referenced, not where he actually shows up) I read somewhere that the actors playing the centurions were instructed to keep a straight face no matter what. So the close up where Michael Palin is right in that one guy’s face talking about Incontinentia Buttocks is really the actor trying with all his might not to laugh.

A great Nathan Fillion interview on The Late Late Show… Nathan is just awesome… wish he is everywhere in everything on TV or movies…

Be sure to listen all the way to the end. Ferris Family Theatre!! WooT!!

bwuhahahahaha!!

“Off go my pants…” LMsbO

Viva la revolution!

Just wanted to chime in. I’m a long-time Joss fan, saw Dr. Horrible back when it first aired (er, streamed?) and own both the DVD and the soundtrack CD. I loved the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and was eager to see Joss get behind the wheel of another musical. By the way, if you haven’t seen “Once More with Feeling”, you need to. Even if you don’t watch the rest of the series, you can still enjoy the episode, you just won’t get some of the references. (On a side note, if you watched both Firefly and Dr. Horrible and loved them, you need to watch Buffy. The first season is shaky in places, but once the show finds its feet mid-season 2 it is awesome. You’ll love it for the same reason you love the rest.)

Speaking of … I fell in love with Penny about 5 seconds after she started singing. It just broke my heart to see this sweet, hopeful girl trying to help people and being ignored. “Only have to sign your name … don’t even have to read it.” Apathy is possibly our society’s biggest problem and she and Joss summed it up pretty succintly. I adore Felicia Day and will now watch just about anything she does, but I’ve been doing that for the whole Joss crowd for a while.

I can’t help but agree that Penny was the influence that could have kept Dr. Horrible from become a true super-villain and that her loss not only removed that, but was also a catalyst for him walling off his emotions and becoming even worse than he might have otherwise. Reminds me of Mr. Freeze in a way. There’s a great episode of the Batman animated series where Freeze was specifically destroying the magnum opus of several of Gotham’s artists and architects, solely to make others feel the loss that he felt for losing his wife.

Just like Joss’ other work, Dr. Horrible straddles many genres and styles and does so quite well. Thanks for covering it.

That is great!!! I needed the laugh.

Minor correction:

In ‘The Life of Brian’ it was names with R’s that the crowd was trying to get Pontious Pilot to say.

As in- Wodger, Bwian, Woderick, Wudy, Audwea, etc.

And I think Biggus Dickus lisped his T’s, I am not sure… It has been quite a while since I have seen it. And his wife was Incontinentia Buttocks.

And I can understand Captian Hammers feelings on ducks.

Ducks are Fowl!

I wish Nathan was going to play the Green Lantern instead of Ryan Reynolds… (sigh)

Ditto. I think Ryan Reynolds is a tool, and his very presence tarnishes what could be an otherwise excellent movie.

Thank ya kindly, sir. Actual quote from one of the kids after hearing podcast: “Why am I on the news?”

Dr. Horrible has a little PG content. I cough loudly on the “the hammer is my…” line, or double-tap the mute button. And I’m not saying that I personally made it or have it, but I’ve heard that someone somewhere created an slightly edited version of the soundtrack and Commentary! songs with a couple extra words edited here and there. I heard.

I can’t help but wonder if Joss got the idea of “Captain Hammer” from Nathan Fillion’s role in PG Porn where he played a construction worker.

Long time lurker, first time poster. Hi. Great cast, as always. Speaking of walking without rhythm, what about a Dune Arc for the podcast? Books (minus the newer prequely stuff being put out by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson), the 1984 movie, the awesome mini-series adaptations by the former Skiffy network. It’s quite an expansive verse.

Also? Ducks rule!

Oh my lord, I laughed so hard I hurt myself!

I’m just taking a break during the Whedonsday night Frak party of Buffy and Angel to just say that if you like Firefly and Dr. Horrible, these are two shows that should be watched. Think of the humor, drama, tragedy all of the other things that you think of when talking about Dr. Horrible and Firefly, and realize you’ll get that in seven seasons of Buffy and five of Angel. The first season of Buffy is a little rough, but all of it is well worth the time investment.

i just came across that the other day on youtube. I was looking up Nathan Fillion and every other page is this PG porn. So finally I decided to see what the heck it is, and it is about the silliest thing you can find online… Right down Nathan’s alley :stuck_out_tongue:
